Proverbios 23
1 Cuando te sientes a comer con un ʼadón, Considera bien lo que está delante de ti,
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider well what is before thee;
2 Y pon cuchillo a tu garganta Si tienes gran apetito.
For thou wilt put a knife to thy throat, If thou art a man given to appetite!
3 No codicies sus manjares delicados, Porque son pan de engaño.
Long not for his dainties. For they are deceitful meat.
4 No te afanes por hacer riquezas. Sé prudente y desiste.
Toil not to become rich; Cease from this, thy wisdom.
5 Si les diriges una mirada, ya no están. Les salieron alas como un águila que vuela a los cielos.
Wilt thou let thine eyes fly toward them? They are gone! For riches truly make to themselves wings; They fly away like the eagle toward heaven.
6 No comas pan con el avaro, Ni codicies sus manjares,
Eat not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, And long not for his dainties;
7 Porque como piensa en su corazón, así es. Come y bebe, te dirá, Pero su corazón no está contigo.
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.
8 Vomitarás el bocado que comiste Y perderás tus suaves palabras.
The morsel, which thou hast eaten, thou shalt vomit up; And thou wilt have thrown away thy sweet words.
9 No hables a oídos del insensato, Porque despreciará la prudencia de tus razones.
Speak not in the ears of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10 No cambies de lugar el lindero antiguo, Ni entres en el campo de los huérfanos,
Remove not the ancient landmark, And enter not into the fields of the fatherless!
11 Porque su Redentor es fuerte, Y defenderá contra ti la causa de ellos.
For their avenger is mighty; He will maintain their cause against thee.
12 Aplica tu corazón a la enseñanza, Y tus oídos a las palabras sabias.
Apply thy heart to instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 No retraigas la corrección al muchacho, Si lo castigas con vara, no morirá.
Withhold not correction from a child; If thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
Beat him thyself with the rod, And thou shalt rescue him from the underworld. (Sheol h7585)
15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, También a mí se me alegrará el corazón,
My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart shall rejoice, even mine;
16 Mi ser interno también se alegrará Cuando tus labios hablen cosas rectas.
Yea, my reins shall exult, When thy lips speak right things.
17 No tenga tu corazón envidia de los pecadores. Más bien, persevera en el temor a Yavé en todo tiempo.
Let not thy heart envy sinners, But continue thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long;
18 Porque ciertamente hay un porvenir, Y tu esperanza no será frustrada.
For surely there shall be a reward, And thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19 Escucha tú, hijo mío, sé sabio, Y dirige tu corazón por el buen camino.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise; And let thy heart go forward in the way!
20 No estés con los bebedores de vino, Ni con los comedores de carne,
Be not thou among winebibbers, And riotous eaters of flesh;
21 Porque el ebrio y el glotón empobrecerán, Y el dormitar hará vestir harapos.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
22 Escucha a tu padre que te engendró, Y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea anciana.
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas, También sabiduría, instrucción y entendimiento.
Buy the truth, and sell it not; Buy wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24 El padre del justo se alegrará en gran manera. El que engendra un hijo sabio se gozará con él.
The father of a righteous man shall greatly rejoice; Yea, he who begetteth a wise child shall have joy in him.
25 Alégrense tu padre y tu madre, Y regocíjese la que te dio a luz.
Let thy father and thy mother have joy; Yea, let her that bore thee rejoice!
26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón Y observen tus ojos mis caminos.
My son, give me thy heart, And let thine eyes observe my ways!
27 Porque fosa profunda es la prostituta, Y pozo angosto la mujer extraña.
For a harlot is a deep ditch; Yea, a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 También ella, como asaltante, acecha, Y entre los hombres multiplica a los traicioneros.
Like a robber she lieth in wait, And increaseth the treacherous among men.
29 ¿Para quién es el ay? ¿Para quién las tristezas? ¿Para quién las contiendas? ¿Para quién el quejido? ¿Para quién las heridas sin causa? ¿Para quién los ojos enrojecidos?
Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who anxiety? Who wounds without cause? Who dimness of eyes?
30 Para el que se detiene en el vino, Para los que prueban licores mezclados.
They that tarry long at the wine; They that go in to seek mixed wine.
31 No mires al vino cuando rojea, Y lanza destellos en la copa, Porque se entra suavemente,
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly.
32 Pero al fin, muerde como una serpiente. Pica como una víbora.
At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.
33 Tus ojos mirarán cosas extrañas, Y tu corazón hablará cosas perversas.
Thine eyes will look upon strange women, And thy heart will utter perverse things.
34 Serás como el que está acostado en alta mar, Como el que duerme en el palo de un velero,
Yea, thou shalt be as one that lieth down in the midst of the sea, And as one that lieth down upon the top of a mast.
35 Y dirás: Me golpearon y no me dolió, Me azotaron, pero no lo sentí. Cuando despierte, lo volveré a buscar.
They have stricken me [[shalt thou say]], —I suffered no pain! They have beaten me, —I felt it not! When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
