Eclesiastes 6
1 Ha um mal que tenho visto debaixo do sol, e mui frequente é entre os homens:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy upon men:
2 Um homem a quem Deus deu riquezas, fazenda e honra, e nada lhe falta de tudo quanto a sua alma deseja, e Deus não lhe dá poder para d'ahi comer, antes o estranho lh'o come: tambem isto é vaidade e uma má enfermidade.
a man to whom God giveth riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it; this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3 Se o homem gerar cem filhos, e viver muitos annos, e os dias dos seus annos forem muitos, porém a sua alma se não fartar do bem, e tambem não tiver sepultura, digo que um aborto é melhor do que elle.
If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul have not enough of good, and moreover he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he;
4 Porquanto debalde veiu, e ás trevas se vae, e de trevas se encobre o seu nome.
for it cometh in vanity, and departeth in darkness, and the name thereof is covered with darkness;
5 E ainda que nunca viu o sol, nem o conheceu, mais descanço tem do que o tal.
moreover it hath not seen the sun nor known it; this hath gratification rather than the other;
6 E, ainda que vivesse duas vezes mil annos e não visse o bem, porventura todos não vão para um mesmo logar?
yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, and enjoy no good; do not all go to one place?
7 Todo o trabalho do homem é para a sua bocca, e comtudo nunca se enche a sua cubiça.
All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8 Porque, que mais tem o sabio do que o tolo? e que mais tem o pobre que sabe andar perante os vivos?
For what advantage hath the wise more than the fool? or the poor man that hath understanding, in walking before the living?
9 Melhor é a vista dos olhos do que o vaguear da cubiça: tambem isto é vaidade, e afflicção de espirito.
Better is the seeing of the eyes than the wandering of the desire; this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
10 Seja qualquer o que fôr, já o seu nome foi nomeado, e sabe-se que é homem, e que não póde contender com o que é mais forte do que elle.
Whatsoever cometh into being, the name thereof was given long ago, and it is foreknown what man is; neither can he contend with Him that is mightier than he.
11 Na verdade que ha muitas coisas que multiplicam a vaidade: que mais tem o homem com ellas!
Seeing there are many words that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12 Porque quem sabe o que é bom n'esta vida para o homem, durante o numero dos dias da vida da sua vaidade, os quaes gasta como sombra? porque quem declarará ao homem que é o que passará depois d'elle debaixo do sol
For who knoweth what is good for man in his life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
