1 Namni addaan of baasu ofittummaa duukaa buʼa; murtii dhugaa hundaanis ni morma.
He who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound judgment.
2 Namni gowwaan hubannaa argachuutti hin gammadu; garuu yaaduma isaa ibsuutti gammada.
A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in airing his opinions.
3 Yeroo hamminni dhufu tuffiin dhufa; salphinnis qaanii wajjin dhufa.
With a wicked man comes contempt as well, and shame is accompanied by disgrace.
4 Dubbiin afaan namaa bishaan gad fagoo dha; burqaan ogummaa garuu bishaan yaaʼuu dha.
The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
5 Gara nama hamaa goruun yookaan nama balleessaa hin qabne murtii qajeelaa dhowwachuun gaarii miti.
Showing partiality to the wicked is not good, nor is depriving the innocent of justice.
6 Hidhiin gowwaa lola fida; afaan isaas rukutamuu itti waama.
A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.
7 Afaan gowwaa badiisa isaa ti; hidhiin isaas kiyyoo lubbuu isaa ti.
A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
8 Dubbiin hamattuu akkuma gurshaa miʼaawuu ti; gara kutaa garaattis gad buʼa.
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels that go down into the inmost being.
9 Namni hojii isaa irratti dhibaaʼu, obboleessa nama waa balleessuu ti.
Whoever is slothful in his work is brother to him who destroys.
10 Maqaan Waaqayyoo gamoo jabaa dha; namni qajeelaan itti baqatee badiisa oola.
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
11 Qabeenyi sooreyyii isaaniif magaalaa daʼoo qabduu dha; isaanis akka dallaa ol dheeraatti hedu.
A rich man’s wealth is his fortified city; it is like a high wall in his imagination.
12 Kufaatiidhaan dura garaan namaa of tuula; gad of qabuun garuu ulfinaan dura dhufa.
Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.
13 Utuu hin dhaggeeffatin deebii kennuun, gowwummaa fi qaanii dha.
He who answers a matter before he hears it— this is folly and disgrace to him.
14 Hafuurri namaa dhukkuba ni obsa; hafuura cabe garuu eenyutu obsuu dandaʼa?
The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, but who can survive a broken spirit?
15 Garaan nama hubataa beekumsa argata; gurri ogeessaas waan kana barbaada.
The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks it out.
16 Kennaan abbicha kennuuf karaa bana; fuula namoota gurguddaa durattis isa dhiʼeessa.
A man’s gift opens doors for him, and brings him before great men.
17 Hamma namni biraa dhufee isaan mormutti, namni jalqabatti himata isaa dhiʼeeffatu tokko dhugaa qabeessa fakkaata.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
18 Ixaa buusuun wal falmii qabbaneessa; namoota wal lolan jajjaboos addaan galcha.
Casting the lot ends quarrels and separates strong opponents.
19 Obboleessa yakkame tokko deebisuun magaalaa daʼoo qabdu irra ulfaata; wal falmiinis akkuma danqaraa karra dallaa dhagaa ti.
An offended brother is harder to win than a fortified city, and disputes are like the bars of a castle.
20 Ija afaan isaatiin garaan namaa quufa; dubbii arraba isaatiinis ni guuta.
From the fruit of his mouth a man’s belly is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.
21 Arrabni humna jireenyaatii fi duʼaa qaba; warri isa jaallatanis ija isaa nyaatu.
Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
22 Namni niitii argatu waan gaarii argata; fuula Waaqayyoo durattis surraa argata.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.
23 Hiyyeessi arraba laafaadhaan dubbata; sooressi garuu sagalee jabaadhaan deebii kenna.
The poor man pleads for mercy, but the rich man answers harshly.
24 Namni michoota baayʼisu ni bada; garuu michuun obboleessa caalaa namatti aanu ni jira.
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
