1 Jechi, “Eenyu iyyuu yoo Phaaphaasii taʼuu hawwe, hojii gaarii hawwa” jedhu kun amanamaa dha.
How true is this saying: “To aspire to be to be a supervisor in the church is to be ambitious for a noble task.”
2 Egaa Phaaphaasiin kan mudaa hin qabne, kan niitii tokkittii qabu, amala qabeessa, kan of qabu, kabajamaa, kan keessummaa simatu, kan barsiisuu dandaʼu,
The supervisor should be of blameless character; a faithful partner; living a temperate, discreet, and well-ordered life; hospitable, and a skilful teacher,
3 kan hin machoofne, kan goolii kaasu utuu hin taʼin obsa qabeessa, kan lola hin jaallannee fi kan maallaqa hin jaallanne taʼuu qaba.
not addicted to drink or brawling, but of a forbearing and peaceable disposition, and not a lover of money;
4 Innis maatii ofii isaa sirriitti bulfatee akka ijoolleen isaa kabaja maluun isaaf ajajaman mirkaneessuu qaba.
they should provide for their own household well, and their children should kept under control and be well-behaved.
5 Namni tokko yoo maatii ofii isaa akka itti bulfatu hin beekne inni akkamitti waldaa kiristaanaa Waaqaa eeguu dandaʼaa?
If someone does not know how to provide for their own household, how can they take charge of the church of God?
6 Inni akka of jajuudhaan afuufamee murtii diiyaabiloos keessatti hin kufneef nama dhiʼoo amane hin taʼin.
The supervisor should not be a recent convert, or they might become blinded by pride and fall under the same judgement as the devil.
7 Innis akka hin tuffatamnee fi akka kiyyoo diiyaabiloos keessattis hin kufneef warra alaa biratti maqaa gaarii haa qabaatu.
They should also be well spoken of by outsiders, so that they may not incur censure and so fall into the devil’s trap.
8 Daaqonoonnis akkasuma namoota kabajaman, warra afaan lama hin dubbanne, warra dhugaatii daadhii wayiniitiin hin fudhatamnee fi warra buʼaa hin malle argachuuf hin tattaaffanne taʼuu qabu.
So, too, assistants should be serious and straightforward, not given to taking much drink or to questionable money-making,
9 Yaada qulqulluunis icciitii amantii jabeessanii qabachuu qabu.
but people who hold the deep truths of the faith and have a clear conscience.
10 Isaanis duraan dursanii haa qorataman; ergasiis yoo mudaan tokko iyyuu isaan irratti hin argamin daaqonoota taʼanii haa tajaajilan.
They should be tested first, and only appointed to their office if no objection is raised against them.
11 Akkasumas dubartoonni isaanii kabajamoo, kanneen maqaa nama hin balleessine, amala qabeeyyii fi waan hundaan amanamoo taʼuu qabu.
It should be the same with the women in this office. They should be serious, not gossips, sober, and trustworthy in all respects.
12 Daaqoniin tokko dhirsa niitii tokkittii, kan ijoollee isaatii fi warra mana isaa jiraatan sirriitti bulchu taʼuu qaba.
Assistants should be faithful partners who manage their children and their households well.
13 Warri daaqonummaan sirriitti tajaajilan ulfina guddaa, amantii Kiristoos Yesuusitti qabaniin immoo ija jabina guddaa argatu.
Those who have filled that post with honour gain for themselves an honourable position, as well as great confidence through the faith that they place in Christ Jesus.
14 Ani akkan dafee gara kee dhufu abdadhee qajeelfama kana siif nan barreessa;
I am writing this to you, though I hope that I will come to see you before long;
15 kanas tarii yoo ani ture, namni tokko akkamitti akka mana Waaqaa keessa jiraachuu qabu akka beektuufin siif barreessa; manni Waaqaa kunis waldaa Waaqa jiraataa isa utubaa fi hundee dhugaa taʼee dha.
but in case I should be delayed, I want you to know what your conduct ought to be in the household of God, which is the church of the living God – the pillar and stay of the truth.
16 Waaqatti buluun shakkii tokko malee icciitii guddaa of keessaa qaba; kunis, Inni fooniin mulʼate; Hafuuraan mirkaneeffame; ergamoota Waaqaatu isa arge; saboota keessatti lallabame; addunyaa irratti itti amaname; ulfinaan ol fudhatame.
Yes, and undeniably wonderful are the deep truths of our religion; for – “He was revealed in our nature, pronounced righteous in spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, taken up into glory.”
