伝道者の書 7
1 良き名は良き油にまさり、死ぬる日は生るる日にまさる。
A good name [is] better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
2 悲しみの家にはいるのは、宴会の家にはいるのにまさる。死はすべての人の終りだからである。生きている者は、これを心にとめる。
[It is] better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that [is] the end of all men; and the living will lay [it] to his heart.
3 悲しみは笑いにまさる。顔に憂いをもつことによって、心は良くなるからである。
Sorrow [is] better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 賢い者の心は悲しみの家にあり、愚かな者の心は楽しみの家にある。
The heart of the wise [is] in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools [is] in the house of mirth.
5 賢い者の戒めを聞くのは、愚かな者の歌を聞くのにまさる。
[It is] better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 愚かな者の笑いはかまの下に燃えるいばらの音のようである。これもまた空である。
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so [is] the laughter of the fool: this also [is] vanity.
7 たしかに、しえたげは賢い人を愚かにし、まいないは人の心をそこなう。
Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8 事の終りはその初めよりも良い。耐え忍ぶ心は、おごり高ぶる心にまさる。
Better [is] the end of a thing than its beginning: [and] the patient in spirit [is] better than the proud in spirit.
9 気をせきたてて怒るな。怒りは愚かな者の胸に宿るからである。
Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10 「昔が今よりもよかったのはなぜか」と言うな。あなたがこれを問うのは知恵から出るのではない。
Say not thou, What is [the cause] that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.
11 知恵に財産が伴うのは良い。それは日を見る者どもに益がある。
Wisdom [is] good with an inheritance: and [by it there is] profit to them that see the sun.
12 知恵が身を守るのは、金銭が身を守るようである。しかし、知恵はこれを持つ者に生命を保たせる。これが知識のすぐれた所である。
For wisdom [is] a defense, [and] money [is] a defense: but the excellence of knowledge [is], [that] wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13 神のみわざを考えみよ。神の曲げられたものを、だれがまっすぐにすることができるか。
Consider the work of God: for who can make [that] straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 順境の日には楽しめ、逆境の日には考えよ。神は人に将来どういう事があるかを、知らせないために、彼とこれとを等しく造られたのである。
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15 わたしはこのむなしい人生において、もろもろの事を見た。そこには義人がその義によって滅びることがあり、悪人がその悪によって長生きすることがある。
All [things] have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just [man] that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked [man] that prolongeth [his life] in his wickedness.
16 あなたは義に過ぎてはならない。また賢きに過ぎてはならない。あなたはどうして自分を滅ぼしてよかろうか。
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldst thou destroy thyself?
17 悪に過ぎてはならない。また愚かであってはならない。あなたはどうして、自分の時のこないのに、死んでよかろうか。
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldst thou die before thy time?
18 あなたがこれを執るのはよい、また彼から手を引いてはならない。神をかしこむ者は、このすべてからのがれ出るのである。
[It is] good that thou shouldst take hold of this; yes, also from this withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall escape from them all.
19 知恵が知者を強くするのは、十人のつかさが町におるのにまさる。
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty [men] who are in the city.
20 善を行い、罪を犯さない正しい人は世にいない。
For [there is] not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 人の語るすべての事に心をとめてはならない。これはあなたが、自分のしもべのあなたをのろう言葉を聞かないためである。
Also take no heed to all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 あなたもまた、しばしば他人をのろったのを自分の心に知っているからである。
For often also thy own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 わたしは知恵をもってこのすべての事を試みて、「わたしは知者となろう」と言ったが、遠く及ばなかった。
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it [was] far from me.
24 物事の理は遠く、また、はなはだ深い。だれがこれを見いだすことができよう。
That which is far off, and exceedingly deep, who can find it out?
25 わたしは、心を転じて、物を知り、事を探り、知恵と道理を求めようとし、また悪の愚かなこと、愚痴の狂気であることを知ろうとした。
I applied my heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason [of things], and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness [and] madness:
26 わたしは、その心が、わなと網のような女、その手が、かせのような女は、死よりも苦い者であることを見いだした。神を喜ばす者は彼女からのがれる。しかし罪びとは彼女に捕えられる。
And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart [is] snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoever pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 伝道者は言う、見よ、その数を知ろうとして、いちいち数えて、わたしが得たものはこれである。
Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, [counting] one by one, to find out the account:
28 わたしはなおこれを求めたけれども、得なかった。わたしは千人のうちにひとりの男子を得たけれども、そのすべてのうちに、ひとりの女子をも得なかった。
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 見よ、わたしが得た事は、ただこれだけである。すなわち、神は人を正しい者に造られたけれども、人は多くの計略を考え出した事である。
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
