Proverbi 23
1 Quando tu sederai [a tavola] con alcun signore, Per mangiar con lui, Considera attentamente quello che [sarà] dinanzi a te;
When you sit down to dine with a ruler, consider carefully what is set before you,
2 [Altrimenti], se tu [sei] ingordo, Tu ti metterai un coltello alla gola.
and put a knife to your throat if you possess a great appetite.
3 Non appetire le sue delizie; Perciocchè sono un cibo fallace.
Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.
4 Non affaticarti per arricchire; Rimanti della tua prudenza.
Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself.
5 In un batter d'occhio [le ricchezze] non [sono più]; Perciocchè ad un tratto si fanno delle ale; [E sono] come un'aquila, che se ne vola in aria.
When you glance at wealth, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky.
6 Non mangiare il pan dell'uomo che è d'occhio maligno, E non appetire le sue delizie.
Do not eat the bread of a stingy man, and do not crave his delicacies;
7 Perciocchè, come egli è villano nell'anima sua, Così egli ti dirà: Mangia, e bevi; Ma il cuor son non [sarà] teco.
for he is keeping track, inwardly counting the cost. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
8 Tu vomiterai il boccone [che ne] avrai mangiato, Ed avrai perduti i tuoi ragionamenti piacevoli.
You will vomit up what little you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.
9 Non parlare in presenza dello stolto; Perciocchè egli sprezzerà il senno de' tuoi ragionamenti.
Do not speak to a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 Non rimuovere il termine antico; E non entrare ne' campi degli orfani.
Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
11 Perciocchè il lor riscotitore [è] potente; Egli difenderà la causa loro contro a te.
for their Redeemer is strong; He will take up their case against you.
12 Porgi il tuo cuore all'ammaestramento, E le tue orecchie a' detti della scienza.
Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
13 Non risparmiare la correzione al fanciullo; Benchè tu lo batti con la verga, non [però] morrà.
Do not withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
Strike him with a rod, and you will deliver his soul from Sheol. (Sheol h7585)
15 Figliuol mio, se il tuo cuore è savio, Il mio cuore altresì se ne rallegrerà.
My son, if your heart is wise, my own heart will indeed rejoice.
16 E le mie reni gioiranno, Quando le tue labbra parleranno cose diritte.
My inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
17 Il cuor tuo non porti invidia a' peccatori; Anzi [attienti] sempre al timore del Signore.
Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always continue in the fear of the LORD.
18 Perciocchè, se vi è premio, La tua speranza non sarà troncata.
For surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Ascolta, figliuol mio, e sii savio; E addirizza il tuo cuore nella [diritta] via.
Listen, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart on the right course.
20 Non esser de' bevitori di vino; [Nè] de' ghiotti mangiatori di carne.
Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat.
21 Perciocchè l'ubbriaco ed il ghiotto impoveriranno; Ed il sonnecchiare farà vestire stracci.
For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe them in rags.
22 Ubbidisci a tuo padre, il qual ti ha generato; E non isprezzar tua madre, quando sarà divenuta vecchia.
Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Compera verità, e non vender[la], [Compera] sapienza, ammaestramento, ed intendimento.
Invest in truth and never sell it— in wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24 Il padre del giusto gioirà grandemente; E chi avrà generato un savio, ne avrà allegrezza.
The father of a righteous man will greatly rejoice, and he who fathers a wise son will delight in him.
25 [Fa]' che tuo padre e tua madre si rallegrino; E che quella che ti ha partorito gioisca.
May your father and mother be glad, and may she who gave you birth rejoice!
26 Figliuol mio, recami il tuo cuore, E gli occhi tuoi guardino le mie vie.
My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways.
27 Perciocchè la meretrice [è] una fossa profonda, E la straniera un pozzo stretto.
For a prostitute is a deep pit, and an adulteress is a narrow well.
28 Ed anche ella sta agli agguati, come un ladrone; Ed accresce [il numero de]'malfattori fra gli uomini.
Like a robber she lies in wait and multiplies the faithless among men.
29 A cui [avvengono] i guai? a cui i lai? A cui le contese? a cui i rammarichi? A cui le battiture senza cagione? a cui il rossore degli occhi?
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has needless wounds? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 A quelli che si fermano lungamente appresso il vino; A quelli che vanno cercando da mescere.
Those who linger over wine, who go to taste mixed drinks.
31 Non riguardare il vino, quando rosseggia, Quando sfavilla nella coppa, [E] cammina diritto.
Do not gaze at wine while it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
32 Egli morderà alla fine come il serpente, E pungerà come l'aspido.
In the end it bites like a snake and stings like a viper.
33 [Allora] gli occhi tuoi vedranno cose strane, E il tuo cuore parlerà cose stravolte.
Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will utter perversities.
34 E tu sarai come chi giace in mezzo al mare, E come chi dorme in su la cima dell'albero della nave.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas or lying on the top of a mast:
35 [Tu dirai: ] Altri mi ha battuto, ed io non ne ho sentita la doglia; Altri mi ha pesto, [ed] io non me ne sono avveduto; Quando mi risveglierò? io tornerò a cercarlo ancora.
“They struck me, but I feel no pain! They beat me, but I did not know it! When can I wake up to search for another drink?”
