Deuteronomio 1

1 Queste sono le parole che Mosè rivolse a tutto Israele oltre il Giordano, nel deserto, nella valle dell'Araba, di fronte a Suf, tra Paran, Tofel, Laban, Cazerot e Di-Zaab.

These, are the words, which Moses spake unto all Israel, over the Jordan, —in the wilderness in the waste plain over against Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban and Hazeroth and Di-zahab:

2 Vi sono undici giornate dall'Oreb, per la via del monte Seir, fino a Kades-Barnea.

eleven days from Horeb, by way of Mount Seir, as far as Kadesh-barnea.

3 Nel quarantesimo anno, l'undicesimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, Mosè parlò agli Israeliti, secondo quanto il Signore gli aveva ordinato di dir loro.

And it came to pass, in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, that Moses spake unto the sons of Israel, according to all that Yahweh had given him in charge for them;

4 Dopo aver sconfitto Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava in Chesbon, e Og, re di Basan, che abitava in Astarot e in Edrei,

after he had smitten Sihon, king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, —and Og, king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, in Edrei:

5 oltre il Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge:

over the Jordan, in the land of Moab, did Moses take in hand to expound this law, saying: —

6 «Il Signore nostro Dio ci ha parlato sull'Oreb e ci ha detto: Avete dimorato abbastanza su questa montagna;

Yahweh our God, spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Long enough, have ye dwelt in this mountain:

7 voltatevi, levate l'accampamento e andate verso le montagne degli Amorrei e in tutte le regioni vicine: la valle dell'Araba, le montagne, la Sefela, il Negheb, la costa del mare, nel paese dei Cananei e nel Libano, fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate.

Turn ye and set yourselves forward, and enter into the hill country of the Amorites, and into all the places near, in the plain, in the mountain, and in the lowland, and in the south, and in the coast of the sea, —the land of Canaan and the Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Ecco, io vi ho posto il paese dinanzi; entrate, prendete in possesso il paese che il Signore ha giurato di dare ai vostri padri, Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, e alla loro stirpe dopo di essi.

See! I have set before you the land, —enter and possess the land, which, Yahweh sware unto your fathers to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them, and unto their seed, after them.

9 In quel tempo io vi ho parlato e vi ho detto: Io non posso da solo sostenere il carico del popolo.

So I spake unto you, at that time saying, I am unable, by myself, to carry you.

10 Il Signore vostro Dio vi ha moltiplicati ed ecco oggi siete numerosi come le stelle del cielo.

Yahweh your God hath multiplied you, and here ye are to-day, like the stars of the heavens for multitude.

11 Il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, vi aumenti anche mille volte di più e vi benedica come vi ha promesso di fare.

Yahweh, the God of your fathers, be adding unto you the like of you, a thousand times, —and bless you, as he hath spoken unto you!

12 Ma come posso io da solo portare il vostro peso, il vostro carico e le vostre liti?

How should I carry by myself the fatigue of you and the burden of you and your controversies?

13 Sceglietevi nelle vostre tribù uomini saggi, intelligenti e stimati, e io li costituirò vostri capi.

Set forth for you—men wise and discerning, and known to your tribes, —that I may appoint them to be heads over you.

14 Voi mi rispondeste: Va bene ciò che proponi di fare.

And ye answered me, —and said, Good, is the word which thou hast spoken to be done.

15 Allora presi i capi delle vostre tribù, uomini saggi e stimati, e li stabilii sopra di voi come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di decine, e come scribi nelle vostre tribù.

So I took heads for your tribes wise men and known, and placed them as heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties and captains of tens, and overseers for your tribes.

16 In quel tempo diedi quest'ordine ai vostri giudici: Ascoltate le cause dei vostri fratelli e giudicate con giustizia le questioni che uno può avere con il fratello o con lo straniero che sta presso di lui.

And I charged your judges, at that time, saying, —Ye are to hear between your brethren and shall judge righteously, between each man and his brother and his sojourner.

17 Nei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali, darete ascolto al piccolo come al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, poiché il giudizio appartiene a Dio; le cause troppo difficili per voi le presenterete a me e io le ascolterò.

Ye shall not take note of faces in judgment—so the small as the great, shall ye hear, ye shall not shrink from the face of any man, for judgment, unto God, belongeth, —but the thing which is too hard for you, shall ye bring near unto me, and I will hear it.

18 In quel tempo io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare.

So I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19 Poi partimmo dall'Oreb e attraversammo tutto quel deserto grande e spaventoso che avete visto, dirigendoci verso le montagne degli Amorrei, come il Signore nostro Dio ci aveva ordinato di fare, e giungemmo a Kades-Barnea.

And when we brake up from Horeb, we came through all that great and terrible desert which ye saw, by way of the hill-country of the Amorites, as Yahweh our God commanded us, —and we entered in as far as Kadesh-barnea.

20 Allora vi dissi: Siete arrivati presso la montagna degli Amorrei, che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.

Then said I unto you, —Ye are come in as far as the hill-country of the Amorites, which Yahweh our God, is giving unto us.

21 Ecco il Signore tuo Dio ti ha posto il paese dinanzi; entra, prendine possesso, come il Signore Dio dei tuoi padri ti ha detto; non temere e non ti scoraggiare!

See thou—Yahweh thy God hath set before thee the land, —go up—take possession as Yahweh the God of thy fathers hath spoken unto thee, do not fear, neither be dismayed.

22 Voi vi accostaste a me tutti e diceste: Mandiamo uomini innanzi a noi, che esplorino il paese e ci riferiscano sul cammino per il quale noi dovremo salire e sulle città nelle quali dovremo entrare.

And ye came near unto me all of you, and said Let us send men before us, that they may search out for us the land, —and bring us back word, the way by which we must go up, and the cities whereinto we must enter,

23 La proposta mi piacque e scelsi dodici uomini tra di voi, uno per tribù.

And the thing, was good in mine eyes, —so I took from among you twelve men, one man for each tribe.

24 Quelli si incamminarono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle di Escol ed esplorarono il paese.

And they turned and went up the hill-country, and entered in as far as the ravine of Eshcol, and explored it.

25 Presero con le mani i frutti del paese, ce li portarono e ci fecero questa relazione: E' buono il paese che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.

And they took in their hand of the fruit of the country, and bare it down unto us, and brought us back word, and said, Good is the land, which Yahweh our God, is giving unto us.

26 Ma voi non voleste entrarvi e vi ribellaste all'ordine del Signore vostro Dio;

Nevertheless ye were not willing to go up, —but rebelled against the bidding of Yahweh, your God;

27 mormoraste nelle vostre tende e diceste: Il Signore ci odia, per questo ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d'Egitto per darci in mano agli Amorrei e per distruggerci.

and murmured in your tents and said, Because Yahweh hated us, hath he brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, —to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 Dove possiamo andare noi? I nostri fratelli ci hanno scoraggiati dicendo: Quella gente è più grande e più alta di noi; le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; abbiamo visto là perfino dei figli degli Anakiti.

Whither, are, we, to go up? Our own brethren, have made our heart melt saying—A people greater and taller than we, cities large and walled-up into the heavens, —yea, moreover sons of Anakim, have we seen there.

29 Allora dissi a voi: Non spaventatevi e non abbiate paura di loro.

Then I said unto you, —Ye must not tremble, nor be afraid of them:

30 Il Signore stesso vostro Dio, che vi precede, combatterà per voi, come ha fatto tante volte sotto gli occhi vostri in Egitto

Yahweh your God, who is going before you, he, will fight for you, —according to all that he did with you in Egypt, before your eyes;

31 e come ha fatto nel deserto, dove hai visto come il Signore tuo Dio ti ha portato, come un uomo porta il proprio figlio, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finché siete arrivati qui.

also in the desert which thou hast seen, where Yahweh thy God carried thee as a man will carry his son, throughout all the way that ye journeyed, until ye entered as far as, this place.

32 Nonostante questo, non aveste fiducia nel Signore vostro Dio

But in this thing, ye were putting no trust in Yahweh your God;

33 che andava innanzi a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo dove porre l'accampamento: di notte nel fuoco, per mostrarvi la via dove andare, e di giorno nella nube.

who was going before you in the way—to search out for you a place, where ye might encamp, —in the fire by night, that ye might get sight of the way wherein ye should go, and in the cloud, by day.

34 Il Signore udì le vostre parole, si adirò e giurò:

And Yahweh heard the voice of your words, —and was wroth and sware—saying:

35 Nessuno degli uomini di questa malvagia generazione vedrà il buon paese che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,

Surely, not one of these men, this wicked generation, —shall see the good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers:

36 se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunne. Egli lo vedrà e a lui e ai suoi figli darò la terra che ha calcato, perché ha pienamente seguito il Signore.

saving Caleb son of Jephunneh, he, shall see it, and unto him, will I give the land through which he hath trodden, and unto his sons, —because he hath wholly followed Yahweh.

37 Anche contro di me si adirò il Signore, per causa vostra, e disse: Neanche tu vi entrerai,

Even with me, did Yahweh show himself angry, for your sakes, saying, —Even thou, shalt not enter therein.

38 ma vi entrerà Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che sta al tuo servizio; incoraggialo, perché egli metterà Israele in possesso di questo paese.

Joshua son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he, shall enter in thither, him, strengthen thou, for he, shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 E i vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto: Diventeranno oggetto di preda! e i vostri figli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, essi vi entreranno; a loro lo darò ed essi lo possiederanno.

And your little ones, of whom ye said they should become, a prey, and your sons who to-day know not good and evil, they, shall enter in thither, —and unto them, will I give it, and they, shall possess it.

40 Ma voi volgetevi indietro e incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del Mare Rosso.

But as for you, turn ye, for your part, —and set forward towards the desert, by way of the Red Sea.

41 Allora voi mi rispondeste: Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore! Entreremo e combatteremo in tutto come il Signore nostro Dio ci ha ordinato. Ognuno di voi cinse le armi e presumeste di salire verso la montagna.

Then responded ye and said unto me—We have sinned against Yahweh, We, ourselves, will go up, and fight, according to all that Yahweh our God hath commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye foolishly went up towards the hill-country.

42 Il Signore mi disse: Ordina loro: Non salite e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi; voi sarete sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici.

Then said Yahweh unto me—Say unto them Ye shall not go up, nor fight, for I am not in your midst, —lest ye should be smitten before your enemies.

43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi ascoltaste; anzi vi ribellaste all'ordine del Signore, foste presuntuosi e osaste salire verso i monti.

So I spake unto you howbeit ye hearkened not, —but rebelled against the bidding of Yahweh, and presumptuously went up the hill-country.

44 Allora gli Amorrei, che abitano quella montagna, uscirono contro di voi, vi inseguirono come fanno le api e vi batterono in Seir fino a Corma.

Then came forth the Amorites who were dwelling in that country, to meet you, and they chased you, as do, bees; and struck you down in Seir, as far as Hormah.

45 Voi tornaste e piangeste davanti al Signore; ma il Signore non diede ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse l'orecchio.

So then ye returned and wept before Yahweh, —but Yahweh hearkened not unto your voice, nor gave ear unto you.

46 Così rimaneste in Kades molti giorni, per tutto il tempo in cui vi siete rimasti.

And ye abode in Kadesh many days, —how many were the days that ye abode [there]!
