Jóhannes 9
1 Eitt sinn er Jesús var á gangi, sá hann mann sem hafði verið blindur frá fæðingu.
And, passing along, he saw a man, blind from birth.
2 „Meistari, “sögðu lærisveinar hans, „hvers vegna fæddist þessi maður blindur? Var það vegna þess að hann syndgaði eða foreldrar hans?“
And his disciples questioned him, saying—Rabbi! who sinned, this man or his parents, that, blind, he should be born?
3 „Hvorugt, “svaraði Jesús. „Það er til að sýna mátt Guðs.
Jesus answered—Neither, this man, sinned nor his parents; but…that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
4 Okkur ber að vinna verk þess sem sendi mig, meðan dagur er. Senn kemur nótt og þá leggst öll vinna niður.
We must needs be working the works of him that sent me, while it is, day: There cometh a night, when, no one, can work.
5 En meðan ég er enn í heiminum, er ég ljós heimsins.“
Whensoever I may be, in the world, I am, the light, of the world.
6 Síðan hrækti hann á jörðina, bjó til leðju úr munnvatninu, bar hana á augu blinda mannsins
These things, having said, he spat on the ground, and made clay with the spittle, and laid the clay upon his eyes;
7 og sagði: „Farðu og þvoðu þér í Sílóamlaug.“(Orðið „Sílóam“merkir „sendur.“) Maðurinn fór og þvoði sér og kom aftur sjáandi!
and said unto him—Withdraw! wash in the pool of Siloam, —which is to be translated, Sent. He went away, therefore, and washed, and came, seeing.
8 Nágrannar hans og aðrir, sem vissu að hann hafði verið blindur betlari, spurðu nú hver annan: „Er þetta sami maðurinn – betlarinn?“
The neighbours, therefore, and they who used to observe him aforetime—that he was, a beggar, were saying—Is not, this, he that used to sit and beg?
9 Svörin voru á ýmsa vegu og margir hugsuðu: „Þetta getur ekki verið hann, en hann lítur þó eins út!“En betlarinn sagði: „Ég er maðurinn.“
Others, were saying—’Tis, the same. Others, were saying—Nay! but he is, like him. He, was saying—I, am he.
10 Þá spurðu þeir hann hvernig hann hefði fengið sjónina. „Hvað gerðist?“
So they were saying unto him—How [then] were thine eyes opened?
11 „Maður, sem þeir kalla Jesú, “svaraði hann, „bjó til leðju, bar hana á augu mín og sagði mér síðan að fara og þvo hana burt í Sílóamlauginni. Ég gerði eins og hann sagði, og fékk sjónina!“
He, answered—The man that is called Jesus, made, clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me: Withdraw unto the pool of Siloam, and wash. Going away, therefore, and washing, I received sight.
12 „Hvar er Jesús núna?“spurðu þeir. „Ég veit það ekki, “svaraði hann.
And they said unto him—Where is, He? He saith—I know not.
13 Þá fóru þeir með manninn til faríseanna.
They bring him unto the Pharisees—him at one time blind.
14 Nú vildi svo til að kraftaverkið hafði gerst á hvíldardegi.
Now it was Sabbath, on the day when Jesus made, the clay, and opened his eyes.
15 Farísearnir kröfðu manninn því sagna um atburðinn. Hann sagði þeim hvernig Jesús hefði borið leðjuna á augun og hvernig sjónin hefði komið þegar hann þvoði sér.
Again, therefore, the Pharisees also questioned him, as to how he received sight. And, he, said unto them—Clay, laid he upon mine eyes, and I washed, —and do see.
16 „Þessi Jesús er ekki frá Guði, fyrst hann vinnur á hvíldardögum, “sögðu sumir þeirra. Aðrir sögðu: „En hvernig getur þá venjulegur syndari gert slík kraftaverk?“Þetta varð þeim efni í mikla þrætu.
Certain from among the Pharisees, therefore, were saying—This man is not, from God, because, the Sabbath, he keepeth not. Others, [however] were saying—How can a sinful man, such signs as these, be doing? And there was, a division, among them.
17 Farísearnir sneru sér nú að manninum sem hafði verið blindur og spurðu ákveðnir: „Hvað vilt þú sjálfur segja um þennan mann sem gaf þér sjónina?“„Ég held hann hljóti að vera spámaður, sendur af Guði, “svaraði maðurinn.
So they were saying unto the blind man, again, What dost, thou, say concerning him, in that he opened thine eyes? And, he, said—A prophet, is he.
18 Leiðtogar Gyðinga vildu ekki trúa því að maðurinn hefði verið blindur og sendu því eftir foreldrum hans,
The Jews, therefore, did not believe, concerning him, that he was blind, and received sight, —until they called the parents of him that had received sight,
19 og spurðu: „Er þetta sonur ykkar? Fæddist hann blindur? Og ef svo er, hvernig hefur hann þá fengið sjónina?“
and questioned them, saying—Is, this, your son, of whom, ye, say, that blind, he was, born? How, then, seeth he, even now?
20 „Við vitum að hann er sonur okkar og að hann fæddist blindur, “svöruðu foreldrar hans,
His parents, therefore, answered, and said—We know that, this, is our son, and that, blind, he was born;
21 „en við vitum ekki hver gaf honum sjónina, spyrjið hann sjálfan, hann ætti að vera nógu gamall til að svara fyrir sig.“
But, how he now seeth, we know not, or, who opened his eyes, we, know not, —Question, him, he is, of age, he, concerning himself, shall speak.
22 Þetta sögðu þau af ótta við leiðtogana, en þeir höfðu sagt að hver sá sem segði að Jesús væri Kristur, fengi ekki að sækja guðsþjónustur.
These things, said his parents, because they were in fear of the Jews, —for, already, had the Jews agreed together, that, if anyone should confess, him, to be Christ, an, excommunicant from the synagogue, should he be made.
For this cause, his parents said—He is, of age, —question him.
24 Þeir kölluðu því aftur á manninn, sem verið hafði blindur og sögðu: „Gefðu Guði dýrðina, en ekki Jesú, því að við vitum að Jesús er vondur maður.“
So they called the man a second time—[him] who had been blind, and said unto him—Give glory unto God! We know that, this man, is, a sinner.
25 „Ekki er það mitt að segja hvort hann sé vondur eða góður, “svaraði maðurinn, „en það veit ég, að ég, sem var blindur, er nú sjáandi!“
He, therefore, answered—Whether he is a sinner, I know not: One thing, I know, —That, whereas I was, blind, now, I see!
26 „En hvað gerði hann?“spurðu þeir, „hvernig læknaði hann þig?“
They said, therefore, unto him—What did he unto thee? How opened he thine eyes?
27 „Nei, heyrið mig nú!“hrópaði maðurinn. „Ég hef þegar sagt ykkur það einu sinni. Tókuð þið ekki eftir, eða hvað? Hvers vegna viljið þið fá að heyra það aftur? Ætlið þið kannski líka að verða lærisveinar hans?“
He answered them—I told you just now, and ye did not hear: Why, again, do ye wish to hear? Are, ye also, wishing to become, his disciples?
28 Þá formæltu þeir honum og sögðu: „Þú ert lærisveinn hans, en við erum lærisveinar Móse.
And they reviled him, and said—Thou, art, the disciple, of that man; but, we, are, Moses’, disciples: —
29 Við vitum að Guð talaði við Móse, en um þennan mann vitum við ekkert.“
We, know, that, unto Moses, hath God spoken; but, as for this man, we know not whence he is.
30 „Nú, það er einkennilegt, “svaraði maðurinn. „Hann læknar hina blindu, en samt vitið þið ekkert um hann.
The man answered, and said unto them—Why! Herein, is, the marvel: That, ye, know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes.
31 Það er nú einu sinni svo að Guð hlustar ekki á vonda menn, heldur á þá sem tilbiðja hann og gera vilja hans.
We know that, God, unto sinners, doth not hearken: but, if one be, a worshipper of God, and be doing, his will, unto this one, he hearkeneth.
Out of age-past time, hath it never been heard, that anyone opened the eyes of one who, blind, had been born. (aiōn g165)
33 og ef þessi maður er ekki frá Guði, þá gæti hann ekki gert þetta.“
If this man were not from God, he could have done nothing.
34 „Þú sem ert fáfróður og fæddur í synd, “hrópuðu þeir, „ætlar þú nú að fara að kenna okkur?!“Og þeir fleygðu honum á dyr.
They answered and said unto him—In sins, wast, thou, born, altogether; and art, thou, teaching, us? And they cast him out.
35 Þegar Jesús frétti hvað gerst hafði, leitaði hann manninn uppi og sagði: „Trúir þú á Krist?“
Jesus heard that they had cast him out: and, finding him, said—Dost, thou, believe on the son of Man?
36 „Já, mig langar til þess, “svaraði maðurinn, „en hver er hann, herra?“
He answered [and said]—And, who, is he, Sir, that I may believe on him?
37 „Þú hefur þegar séð hann, “svaraði Jesús, „hann er sá sem við þig talar.“
Jesus said unto him—Thou hast both seen him and, he that is speaking with thee, is, he.
38 „Já, Drottinn, “sagði maðurinn, „ég trúi.“Og hann veitti Jesú lotningu og kraup við fætur hans.
And, he, said—I believe, Sir! and worshipped him.
39 Jesús sagði þá við hann: „Ég kom í heiminn til að opna augu blindra og loka augum þeirra sem halda sig sjá.“
And Jesus said—For judgment, I, unto this world, came: that, they who were not seeing, might see, and, they who were seeing, might become, blind.
40 Farísearnir, sem stóðu þar rétt hjá, spurði þá: „Áttu við að við séum blindir?“
They of the Pharisees who were with him, heard, these things, and said unto him—Are, we also, blind?
41 „Ef þið væruð blindir, þá væruð þið ekki sekir, “svaraði Jesús, „en nú segist þið vera sjáandi, en farið þó ekki eftir orðum mínum – sekt ykkar varir við.“
Jesus said unto them—If, blind, ye had been, ye had not had sin; but, now, ye say, We see, your sin, abideth.
