< Solomona 19 >
1 MAIKAI ka mea ilihune i hele ma kona pololei, Mamua o ka mea lehelehe wahahee, a lapuwale hoi.
Better [is] the poor walking in his integrity, Than the perverse [in] his lips—who [is] a fool.
2 O ka uhane i nele i ka ike, he pono ole ia; O ka mea i wikiwiki na wawae, hele hewa no ia.
Also, without knowledge the soul [is] not good, And the hasty in feet is sinning.
3 O ka lapuwale o ke kanaka, oia ka i hookapae i kona aoao; A ukiuki aku kona naau ia Iehova.
The folly of man perverts his way, And his heart is angry against YHWH.
4 O ka waiwai ka mea e hoonui ai i na makamaka; Ua hookaawaleia hoi ka mea ilihune mai kona hoanoho aku.
Wealth adds many friends, And the poor is separated from his neighbor.
5 O ka mea hoike wahahee, aole e ole kona hoopaiia mai; O ka mea olelo wahahee hoi, aole ia e pakele.
A false witness is not acquitted, Whoever breathes out lies is not delivered.
6 Nui ka poe hoopili aku i ke alii; He hoalauna hoi kela mea keia mea no ke kanaka haawi wale.
Many beg the face of the noble, And all have made friendship to a man of gifts.
7 Pau loa ka poe hoahanau o ka mea nele i ke aloha ole ia ia; Haalele loa hoi kona mau hoalauna ia ia; Hahai oia me na olelo, aole lakou.
All the brothers of the poor have hated him, Surely his friends have also been far from him, He is pursuing words—they are not!
8 O ka mea loaa ia ia ka naauao oia ke aloha i kona uhane; O ka mea hoopaa i ka ike, e loaa ia ia ka pono.
Whoever is getting heart is loving his soul, He is keeping understanding to find good.
9 O ka mea hoike wahahee, aole e ole kona ahewaia mai, O ka mea olelo hoopunipuni, e make oia.
A false witness is not acquitted, And whoever breathes out lies perishes.
10 Aole i ku pono ka hanohano i ka mea lapuwale; Aole loa hoi i ke kauwa, ke noho maluna o na'lii.
Luxury is not fitting for a fool, Much less for a servant to rule among princes.
11 O ko ke kanaka naauao, oia ke hoopanee aku i ka huhu; O kona naui hoi, oia ke kala ana i ka hala.
The wisdom of a man has deferred his anger, And his glory [is] to pass over transgression.
12 He uwo ana me he liona la ka huhu o ke alii; E like hoi me ka hau ma ka weuweu kona lokomaikai.
The wrath of a king [is] a growl as of a young lion, And his goodwill as dew on the herb.
13 He mea poino i ka makuakane ke keiki lapuwale; He kulu mau ana ka hoopaapaa o ka wahine.
A foolish son [is] a calamity to his father, And the contentions of a wife [are] a continual dropping.
14 O ka hale a me ka waiwai, oia ka hooilina no na makua mai; Na Iehova mai hoi ka wahine manao pono.
House and wealth [are] the inheritance of fathers, And an understanding wife [is] from YHWH.
15 O ka palaualelo ka mea e poho ai iloko o ka hiamoe nui; A o ka uhane hoomolowa, e pololi no ia.
Sloth causes deep sleep to fall, And an indolent soul hungers.
16 O ka mea malama i ke kanawai, oia ka i malama i kona uhane; O ka mea malama ole i kona aoao, e make no ia.
Whoever is keeping the command is keeping his soul, Whoever is despising His ways dies.
17 O ka mea manawalea aku i ka ilihune, haawi aku oia na Iehova; A o kana mea i haawi ai, na kela no e hoihoi mai ia ia.
Whoever is lending [to] YHWH is favoring the poor, And He repays his deed to him.
18 E haua i kau keiki oi laua ka manao nona, Mai menemene kou uhane no kona uwe ana.
Discipline your son, for there is hope, And do not lift up your soul to put him to death.
19 O ka mea huhu nui, e hooukuia oia; Ina paha e hookuu aku oe ia ia, pono e hana hou no.
A man of great wrath is bearing punishment, For if you deliver, yet again you add.
20 E hoolohe i ka oleloao, e haliu hoi i ke aoia mai, I naauao oe i kou hopena.
Hear counsel and receive instruction, So that you are wise in your latter end.
21 Nui na manao maloko o ka naau o ke kanaka, Aka, o ka manao o Iehova, oia ke ku paa.
The purposes in a man’s heart [are] many, And the counsel of YHWH—it stands.
22 O ka nani o ke kanaka, oia kona lokomaikai; Maikai hoi ke kanaka ilihune mamua o ka mea wahahee.
The desirableness of a man [is] his kindness, And the poor [is] better than a liar.
23 O ka makau ia Iehova, oia ke ola; E noho oluolu oia, aole e ike mai ka hewa ia ia.
The fear of YHWH [is] to life, And he remains satisfied—he is not charged with evil.
24 Hookomo ka mea palaualelo i kona lima iloko o ka umeke, Aole oia e hoihoi hou aku ia i kona waha.
The slothful has hidden his hand in a dish, Even to his mouth he does not bring it back.
25 E pepehi i ka mea hoowahawaha, a e ao ka mea malama ole; E ao aku hoi i ka mea noonoo, a e ike oia i ka naauao.
Strike a scorner, and the simple acts prudently, And give reproof to the intelligent, He understands knowledge.
26 O ka mea hao i kona makuakaue, a hookuke aku i kona makuwahine, Oia ke keiki hoino, a me ka hoohilahila.
Whoever is spoiling a father causes a mother to flee, A son causing shame, and bringing confusion.
27 Ua oki, e kuu keiki, mai hoolohe i ke ao ana, E hooauwana ai mai ka olelo aku o ka ike.
Cease, my son, to hear instruction—To err from sayings of knowledge.
28 I aia ka mea hoike, hoowahawaha oia i ka pololei; O ka waha o ka poe hewa, moni no ia i ka ino.
A worthless witness scorns judgment, And the mouth of the wicked swallows iniquity.
29 Ua makaukau ka hoopaiia no ka poe haakei, O ka haua hoi no ke kua o ka poe lapuwale.
Judgments have been prepared for scorners, And stripes for the back of fools!
