1 Inyuĩ nĩ inyuĩ ciana cia Jehova Ngai wanyu. Mũtikanetemange kana mwenjwo ihara ũthiũ-inĩ nĩ ũndũ wa mũndũ mũkuũ,
“We are people who belong to Yahweh our God. So, when people die, do not show that you are grieving by gashing/cutting yourselves or by shaving the hair on your foreheads [like the other people-groups do].
2 nĩgũkorwo mũrĩ andũ mamũrĩirwo Jehova Ngai wanyu. Kuuma ndũrĩrĩ-inĩ ciothe cia thĩ, Jehova nĩamũthuurĩte mũtuĩke andũ ake a bata.
We belong to Yahweh alone. Yahweh chose us from all the other people-groups on the earth to be his special people.
3 Mũtikanarĩe kĩndũ o nakĩ kĩrĩ thaahu.
“Do not eat anything that [Yahweh] detests.
4 Ici nĩcio nyamũ iria mwagĩrĩirwo kũrĩa: nĩ ndegwa, na ngʼondu, na mbũri,
The animals [whose meat] you are permitted to eat are cattle, sheep, goats,
5 na thwariga, na thiiya, na thwara, na mbũri ya werũ, na ndoo, na ngondi, o na ngʼondu cia irĩma-inĩ.
deer, gazelles, wild goats, antelopes, and mountain sheep.
6 No mũrĩe nyamũ o yothe ĩrĩ mahũngũ maatũku na makarekania na nĩĩcookagia ithagumia.
Those are animals that have split hoofs and that also (chew their cuds/regurgitate their food [from their stomachs] to chew it again).
7 No rĩrĩ, harĩ nyamũ iria ĩcookagia ithagumia kana irĩ mahũngũ maatũku marekanĩtie biũ, mũtikanarĩe ngamĩĩra, kana mbũkũ, kana ikami. O na gũtuĩka nĩicookagia ithagumia, mahũngũ ma cio ti maatũku, icio irĩ thaahu harĩ inyuĩ.
But there are other animals that chew their cuds that you must not eat. Those are camels, rabbits, and rock badgers. They chew their cuds, but their hooves are not split. So they are not acceptable for you to eat.
8 Nayo ngũrwe, o na akorwo mahũngũ mayo nĩmarekanĩtie biũ-rĩ, ndĩcookagia ithagumia; ĩyo ĩrĩ thaahu harĩ inyuĩ. Mũtikanarĩe nyama ciacio kana mũhutie ciimba ciacio.
Do not eat pigs. They are unacceptable for you to eat; their hooves are split, but they do not chew cud. Do not eat the meat of those animals; do not even touch their dead bodies.
9 Thĩinĩ wa nyamũ ciothe iria itũũraga maaĩ-inĩ, no mũrĩĩage ĩrĩa yothe ĩrĩ mathagu manyiitaine na ĩrĩ ngaracũ mwĩrĩ.
You are permitted to eat any fish that has scales and fins.
10 No ĩrĩa yothe ĩtarĩ tũthagu na ngaracũ, mũtikanamĩrĩe; nĩgũkorwo ĩrĩ thaahu harĩ inyuĩ.
But anything else [that lives in the water] that does not have scales and fins, you must not eat, because [if you eat them], you will become unacceptable [to Yahweh].
11 No mũrĩe nyoni o yothe ĩrĩa ĩtarĩ thaahu.
“You are permitted to eat the flesh of any bird that is acceptable [to Yahweh].
12 No ici mũtikanarĩe: nderi, na ndiyũ, na ndiyũ iria njirũ,
But eagles, vultures, black vultures,
13 na hũngũ ĩrĩa ndune na mũthemba o wothe wa hũngũ iria njirũ,
buzzards, all kinds of kites,
14 na mũthemba o wothe wa mahuru
all kinds of crows,
15 na ndundu ĩrĩa ĩrĩ rũhĩa, na ndundu ĩrĩa ĩgambaga, na nyoni ya iria-inĩ ĩrĩa ĩrĩ mathagu maraaya, na mũthemba o wothe wa rwĩgĩ,
ostriches, seagulls,
16 na gatundu karĩa kanini, na ndundu ĩrĩa nene, o na ndundu ĩrĩa njerũ,
owls, hawks, falcons,
17 na ndundu ya werũ, na rwĩgĩ rũnene rũrĩa rũrĩĩaga thamaki, na nyoni ya iria-inĩ ĩrĩa ĩrĩ ngingo ndaaya,
pelicans, vultures that eat dead animals, cormorants,
18 na karoga-ngunũ, na mĩthemba yothe ya cũcũ-wa-njoka, na hudihuda, o na rũhuhu.
storks, herons, hoopoes, and bats, you must not eat.
19 Tũnyamũ tuothe tũrĩa tũrĩ mathagu tũmbũkaga tũrĩ gĩtutu tũrĩ thaahu harĩ inyuĩ, mũtikanatũrĩe.
“All insects with wings [and which walk on the ground] are unacceptable [to Yahweh]; do not eat them.
20 No nyamũ yothe ĩrĩ mathagu na ndĩrĩ thaahu no mũmĩrĩe.
But other insects with wings [and which hop along the ground] are acceptable to eat.
21 Mũtikanarĩe kĩndũ o na kĩrĩkũ kĩrĩa mũgaakora gĩkuĩte. No mũkĩhe mũndũ wa kũngĩ ũrĩa ũtũũraga itũũra-inĩ o rĩothe rĩa matũũra manyu, nake no akĩrĩe, kana ũkĩenderie mũrũrĩrĩ. No inyuĩ mũrĩ andũ maamũrĩirwo Jehova Ngai wanyu. Mũtikanaruge koori na iria rĩa nyina.
“Do not eat any animal that has died naturally, [because its blood has not been drained out]. You may allow foreigners who live among you to eat those things or you may sell them to other foreigners. But you belong to Yahweh our God; [and those who belong to him are not permitted to eat the meat of animals whose blood has not been drained out]. “You must not cook a young sheep or goat in its mother’s milk.”
22 Menyererai mũrutage gĩcunjĩ gĩa ikũmi kĩa maciaro mothe ma mĩgũnda yanyu mwaka o mwaka.
“Once each year you must set apart (a tithe/10 percent) of all the crops that are produced/harvested in your fields.
23 Rĩagĩrai gĩcunjĩ gĩa ikũmi kĩa ngano yanyu, na ndibei yanyu ya mũhihano, na maguta manyu, na marigithathi manyu ma ndũũru cianyu cia ngʼombe na cia mbũri mbere ya Jehova Ngai wanyu mũrĩ handũ harĩa agaathuura ha gũtũũria Rĩĩtwa rĩake, nĩgeetha mwĩrute gwĩtigĩra Jehova Ngai wanyu hĩndĩ ciothe.
Take those things to the place that Yahweh our God will choose [for you to worship him]. There eat the tithes of your grain, your wine, your [olive] oil, and the meat of the firstborn male animals of your cattle and your sheep. Do this in order that you may learn to always revere Yahweh, [the one who has blessed you by giving you these things].
24 No rĩrĩ, handũ hau hangĩkorwo nĩ haraihu mũno, na Jehova Ngai wanyu nĩamũrathimĩte na mũtingĩhota gũkuua gĩcunjĩ kĩanyu gĩa ikũmi mũtware handũ hau (nĩ ũndũ handũ hau Jehova agaathuura ha gũtũũria Rĩĩtwa rĩake nĩhamũraihĩrĩirie mũno-rĩ),
If the place that Yahweh has chosen [for you to worship him] is very far from your home, with the result that you are not able to take there the tithes [of your crops] with which Yahweh has blessed you, do this:
25 hĩndĩ ĩyo mũgaakũũrania gĩcunjĩ kĩanyu gĩa ikũmi na betha, na inyuĩ mũtware betha ĩyo handũ harĩa Jehova Ngai wanyu agaathuura.
Sell [IDM] the tithes of your crops, wrap the money carefully [in a cloth], and take it with you to the place of worship that Yahweh has chosen.
26 Hũthĩrai betha ĩyo na kũgũra kĩrĩa gĩothe mũngĩenda: ngʼombe, kana ngʼondu, kana ndibei o na kana kĩndũ kĩgagatie gĩa kũnyua, kana o kĩndũ gĩothe kĩrĩa mũngĩenda. Ningĩ inyuĩ na andũ a nyũmba cianyu mũkaarĩĩra indo icio o hau mbere ya Jehova Ngai wanyu mũkenete.
There, [with that money], you may buy whatever you want to—beef or lamb or wine or fermented drinks. And there, in the presence of Yahweh, you and your families should eat [and drink] those things and be happy.
27 Na mũtikanarekererie Alawii arĩa matũũraga matũũra-inĩ manyu, nĩgũkorwo matirĩ gĩthaka kana igai rĩao ene.
But be sure to not neglect/forget [to help] the descendants of Levi who live in your towns, because they will not own any land.
28 Na rĩrĩ, o mĩaka ĩtatũ yathira, mũrutage icunjĩ cia ikũmi cia uumithio wanyu wothe wa mwaka ũcio, mũgaaciga kũu matũũra-inĩ manyu,
“At the end of every three years, bring a tithe of all your crops that have been produced/harvested in that year and store it in your towns.
29 nĩgeetha Alawii (arĩa matarĩ agaĩre gĩthaka kana igai rĩao ene), na andũ a kũngĩ, na ciana cia ngoriai, na atumia a ndigwa arĩa matũũraga matũũra-inĩ manyu, magookaga makarĩa na makahũũna, nĩguo Jehova Ngai wanyu amũrathimage wĩra-inĩ wothe wa moko manyu.
That food is for the descendants of Levi, because they do not have their own land, and for foreigners [who live among you], and for orphans and widows who live in your towns. They are permitted to come [to where the food is stored] and take what they need. Do that in order that Yahweh our God will bless you in everything that you do.”
