1 Eine Frau von den Ehefrauen der Prophetenjünger flehte einst Elisa laut mit den Worten an: »Mein Mann, dein Knecht, ist gestorben, und du weißt selbst, daß dein Knecht ein gottesfürchtiger Mann gewesen ist. Nun ist der Gläubiger gekommen und will sich meine beiden Söhne zu Sklaven nehmen!«

And one of the wiues of the sonnes of the Prophets cryed vnto Elisha, saying, Thy seruant mine husband is dead, and thou knowest, that thy seruant did feare the Lord: and the creditour is come to take my two sonnes to bee his bondmen.

2 Elisa antwortete ihr: »Was soll ich für dich tun? Sage mir, was du im Hause hast!« Sie erwiderte: »Deine Magd hat gar nichts mehr im Hause als nur einen Krug mit etwas Öl.«

Then Elisha saide vnto her, What shall I do for thee? tell mee, what hast thou at home? And she sayd, Thine handmayd hath nothing at home, saue a pitcher of oyle.

3 Da sagte er: »Gehe hin, borge dir Gefäße von allen deinen Nachbarn draußen, leere Gefäße, aber nimm nicht zu wenige;

And he sayde, Goe, and borowe thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, emptie vessels, and spare not.

4 hierauf gehe heim, schließe die Tür hinter dir und deinen beiden Söhnen zu und gieße in alle jene Gefäße ein; und wenn eins voll ist, so setze es beiseite.««

And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the doore vpon thee and vpon thy sonnes, and powre out into all those vessels, and set aside those that are full.

5 Sie ging dann von ihm weg und schloß die Tür hinter sich und ihren Söhnen zu; diese reichten ihr (die Gefäße), und sie goß sie voll.

So shee departed from him, and shut the doore vpon her, and vpon her sonnes. And they brought to her, and she powred out.

6 Als nun die Gefäße gefüllt waren, sagte sie zu ihrem Sohn: »Reiche mir noch ein Gefäß!«, aber er antwortete ihr: »Es ist kein Gefäß mehr da«; da hörte das Öl auf zu fließen.

And when the vessels were full, shee sayde vnto her sonne, Bring mee yet a vessel. And hee said vnto her, There is no moe vessels. And the oyle ceased.

7 Als sie nun zu dem Gottesmann kam und es ihm berichtete, sagte er: »Gehe hin, verkaufe das Öl und bezahle deine Schuld; von dem, was dir dann noch übrigbleibt, kannst du mit deinen Söhnen leben.«

Then shee came and tolde the man of God. And he saide, Goe, and sell the oyle, and pay them that thou art in debt vnto, and liue thou and thy children of the rest.

8 Eines Tages ging Elisa nach Sunem hinüber; dort wohnte eine reiche Frau, die ihn nötigte, bei ihr zu essen. Sooft er nun später an dem Ort vorüberkam, kehrte er dort zum Essen ein.

And on a time Elisha came to Shunem, and there a woman of great estimation constrained him to eate bread: and as he passed by, he turned in thither to eate bread.

9 Da sagte sie zu ihrem Manne: »Sieh doch, ich habe erkannt, daß dieser ein heiliger Gottesmann ist, der immer bei uns einkehrt;

And she sayde vnto her husband, Beholde, I know now, that this is an holy man of God that passeth by vs continually.

10 wir wollen ihm doch ein kleines Zimmer oben im Hause aufmauern lassen und ihm ein Bett, einen Tisch, einen Stuhl und einen Leuchter hineinstellen; dann kann er dort ein Unterkommen finden, sooft er zu uns kommt.«

Let vs make him a litle chamber, I pray thee, with walles, and let vs set him there a bed, and a table, and a stoole, and a candlesticke, that hee may turne in thither when hee commeth to vs.

11 Als er nun eines Tages wieder hinkam, kehrte er in dem Oberstübchen ein und schlief darin.

And on a day, hee came thither and turned into the chamber, and lay therein,

12 Nachher befahl er seinem Diener Gehasi: »Rufe mir unsere Sunamitin!« Als er sie nun gerufen hatte und sie vor ihn getreten war,

And sayd to Gehazi his seruant, Call this Shunammite: and when hee called her, she stood before him.

13 sagte Elisa zu dem Diener: »Sage ihr: ›Du hast dir unsertwegen alle diese Unruhe gemacht: was kann man für dich tun? Brauchst du Fürsprache beim König oder Feldhauptmann?‹« Sie antwortete: »Ich wohne hier ja sicher inmitten meines Volkes.«

Then he sayd vnto him, Say vnto her now, Beholde, thou hast had all this great care for vs, what shall we doe for thee? Is there any thing to bee spoken for thee to the King or to the captaine of the hoste? And shee answered, I dwell among mine owne people.

14 Als er nun wieder fragte: »Was könnte man wohl für sie tun?«, antwortete Gehasi: »Ach, sie ist kinderlos, und ihr Mann ist schon alt.«

Againe he sayde, What is then to be done for her? Then Gehazi answered, In deede she hath no sonne, and her husband is olde.

15 Darauf sagte Elisa: »Rufe sie her!« Als er sie nun gerufen hatte und sie in die Tür getreten war,

Then said he, Cal her. And hee called her, and shee stoode in the doore.

16 sagte er: »Übers Jahr um diese Zeit wirst du einen Sohn herzen!« Aber sie entgegnete: »Ach nein, mein Herr, du Mann Gottes: täusche doch deine Magd nicht!«

And he said, At this time appointed, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a sonne. And she sayd, Oh my Lord, thou man of God, doe not lye vnto thine handmayd.

17 Die Frau aber wurde wirklich guter Hoffnung und gebar um dieselbe Zeit im nächsten Jahre einen Sohn, wie Elisa ihr verheißen hatte.

So the woman conceiued, and bare a sonne at that same season, according to the time of life, that Elisha had sayd vnto her.

18 Als nun der Knabe herangewachsen war, begab es sich eines Tages, daß er zu seinem Vater zu den Schnittern hinausging.

And when the childe was growen, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father, and to the reapers.

19 Da klagte er (plötzlich) seinem Vater: »Mein Kopf, mein Kopf!« Jener befahl einem Knecht: »Trage ihn heim zu seiner Mutter!«

And he sayde to his father, Mine head, mine head. Who sayd to his seruant, Beare him to his mother.

20 Als dieser ihn auf den Arm genommen und zu seiner Mutter gebracht hatte, saß er bis zum Mittag auf ihrem Schoß; dann starb er.

And hee tooke him and brought him to his mother, and hee sate on her knees till noone, and dyed.

21 Da stieg sie hinauf, legte ihn auf das Bett des Gottesmannes, schloß hinter ihm zu und ging hinaus;

Then shee went vp, and layed him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the doore vpon him, and went out.

22 dann ließ sie ihren Mann rufen und sagte zu ihm: »Schicke mir doch einen von den Knechten und eine Eselin; ich will zu dem Gottesmann eilen, komme aber schnell wieder zurück.«

Then she called to her husband, and sayd, Send with me, I pray thee, one of the yong men and one of the asses: for I will haste to the man of God, and come againe.

23 Er entgegnete: »Warum willst du gerade heute zu ihm gehen? Es ist doch weder Neumond noch Sabbat!« Doch sie erwiderte: »Das schadet nichts.«

And he sayd, Wherefore wilt thou goe to him to day? it is neither newe moone nor Sabbath day. And she answered, All shalbe well.

24 Hierauf ließ sie die Eselin satteln und befahl ihrem Knecht: »Treibe das Tier immerfort an und mache mir keinen Aufenthalt beim Reiten, es sei denn, daß ich es dir sage!«

Then she sadled an asse, and sayde to her seruant, Driue, and goe forward: staye not for me to get vp, except I bid thee.

25 So machte sie sich auf den Weg und gelangte zu dem Gottesmann auf den Berg Karmel. Als nun der Gottesmann sie in einiger Entfernung erblickte, sagte er zu seinem Diener Gehasi: »Da ist ja unsere Sunamitin!

So she went, and came vnto the man of God to mount Carmel. And when the man of God sawe her ouer against him, he sayd to Gehazi his seruant, Beholde, the Shunammite.

26 Wohlan, laufe ihr entgegen und frage sie, ob es ihr sowie ihrem Mann und dem Knaben gutgehe.« Sie antwortete: »Ja.«

Runne nowe, I say, to meete her, and say vnto her, Art thou in health? is thine husband in health? and is the child in health? And she answered, We are in health.

27 Als sie aber zu dem Gottesmann auf den Berg gekommen war, umfaßte sie seine Füße; da trat Gehasi hinzu, um sie wegzustoßen; aber der Gottesmann sagte: »Laß sie! Denn sie ist tief betrübt, und Gott hat es mir verborgen und mir’s nicht geoffenbart.«

And when shee came to the man of God vnto the moutaine, she caught him by his feete: and Gehazi went to her, to thrust her away: but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soule is vexed within her, and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told it mee.

28 Sie sagte dann: »Bin ich es gewesen, die meinen Herrn um einen Sohn gebeten hat? Habe ich nicht vielmehr gesagt, du möchtest mich nicht täuschen?«

Then she said, Did I desire a sonne of my lord? did I not say, Deceiue me not?

29 Da befahl er Gehasi: »Gürte dir die Lenden, nimm meinen Stab in deine Hand und gehe hin! Wenn du jemand triffst, so grüße ihn nicht, und wenn dich jemand grüßt, so danke ihm nicht! Lege dann dem Knaben meinen Stab auf das Gesicht!«

Then he sayd to Gehazi, Gird thy loynes, and take my staffe in thine hand, and goe thy way: if thou meete any, salute him not: and if any salute thee, answere him not: and laye my staffe vpon the face of the childe.

30 Aber die Mutter des Knaben rief: »So wahr der HERR lebt und so wahr du selbst lebst: ich lasse nicht von dir!« Da machte er sich auf und folgte ihr.

And the mother of the childe sayde, As the Lord liueth, and as thy soule liueth, I will not leaue thee. Therefore he arose, and followed her.

31 Gehasi war ihnen unterdessen vorausgeeilt und hatte dem Knaben den Stab auf das Gesicht gelegt, aber kein Laut und kein Lebenszeichen war erfolgt. Da kehrte er um, (seinem Herrn) entgegen, und berichtete ihm, der Knabe sei nicht aufgewacht;

But Gehazi was gone before them, and had layed the staffe vpon the face of the childe, but he neither spake nor heard: wherefore hee returned to meete him, and told him, saying, The childe is not waken.

32 und als Elisa dann in das Haus kam, fand er den Knaben tot auf seinem eigenen Bette liegen.

Then came Elisha into the house, and beholde, the childe was dead, and layed vpon his bedde.

33 Nun ging er hinein, schloß die Tür hinter sich zu und betete zum HERRN;

He went in therefore, and shut the doore vpon them twayne, and prayed vnto the Lord.

34 dann stieg er auf das Bett, streckte sich über den Knaben hin und legte seinen Mund auf dessen Mund, seine Augen auf dessen Augen und seine Hände auf die Hände jenes. Als er sich so über ihn hinstreckte, erwärmte sich der Leib des Knaben.

After he went vp, and lay vpon the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes vpon his eies, and his hands vpon his handes, and stretched himselfe vpon him, and the flesh of the child waxed warme.

35 Dann stand er wieder auf und ging im Zimmer hin und her, stieg dann wieder hinauf und streckte sich über ihn hin. Da nieste der Knabe siebenmal und schlug die Augen hell auf.

And hee went from him, and walked vp and downe in the house, and went vp and spred himselfe vpon him: then the childe neesed seuen times, and opened his eyes.

36 Nun rief er Gehasi und befahl ihm: »Rufe unsere Sunamitin!« Der rief sie herbei, und als sie zu ihm hereinkam, sagte er: »Nimm da deinen Sohn!«

Then he called Gehazi, and sayd, Call this Shunammite. So he called her, which came in vnto him. And he said vnto her, Take thy sonne.

37 Da trat sie heran, fiel ihm zu Füßen, verneigte sich tief bis zur Erde, nahm ihren Sohn auf den Arm und ging hinaus.

And she came, and fell at his feete, and bowed her selfe to the ground, and tooke vp her sonne, and went out.

38 Elisa kehrte dann nach Gilgal zurück, während eine Hungersnot im Lande herrschte. Als nun die Prophetenjünger vor ihm saßen, gab er seinem Diener den Auftrag, den größten Kochtopf aufs Feuer zu setzen und ein Gericht für die Prophetenjünger zu kochen.

Afterward Elisha returned to Gilgal, and a famine was in the land, and the children of the Prophets dwelt with him. And hee sayd vnto his seruant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the children of the Prophets.

39 Da ging einer von ihnen auf das Feld hinaus, um Kräuter zu sammeln, und als er ein wildes Schlinggewächs fand, pflückte er davon wilde Gurken ab, seinen ganzen Mantel voll; dann kehrte er heim und zerschnitt sie in den Kochtopf; denn er kannte sie nicht.

And one went out into the fielde, to gather herbes, and founde, as it were, a wilde vine, and gathered thereof wilde gourdes his garment ful, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew it not.

40 Als man sie dann zum Essen für die Männer ausgeschüttet hatte und diese von dem Gericht aßen, schrien sie laut auf und riefen: »Der Tod ist im Topf, Mann Gottes!«, und sie konnten es nicht essen.

So they powred out for the men to eate: and when they did eate of the pottage, they cryed out, and sayde, O thou man of God, death is in the pot: and they could not eate thereof.

41 Da sagte er: »So bringt Mehl her!« Er warf es in den Topf und sagte dann: »Fülle es jetzt für die Leute aus, damit sie es essen.« Da war nichts Schädliches mehr im Topf.

Then he said, Bring meale. And hee cast it into the potte, and sayd, Powre out for the people, that they may eate: and there was none euill in the pot.

42 Hierauf kam ein Mann aus Baal-Salisa und brachte dem Gottesmann Erstlingsbrote, nämlich zwanzig Gerstenbrote, dazu Schrotkorn in seinem Sack. Da befahl er: »Gib es den Leuten zu essen!«

Then came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, euen twenty loaues of barley, and full eares of corne in the huske. And hee saide, Giue vnto the people, that they may eate.

43 Sein Diener aber entgegnete: »Wie kann ich dies hundert Männern vorsetzen?« Doch er befahl: »Gib es den Leuten zu essen! Denn so hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Man wird essen und noch übriglassen‹«.

And his seruant answered, How shoulde I set this before an hundreth men? He sayd againe, Giue it vnto the people, that they may eate: for thus sayth the Lord, They shall eate, and there shall remaine.

44 Als er es ihnen nun vorsetzte, aßen sie und ließen noch davon übrig, wie der HERR es verheißen hatte.

So he set it before them, and they did eate, and left ouer, according to the word of the Lord.
