1 Joram, der Sohn Ahabs, wurde König über Israel zu Samaria im achtzehnten Jahre der Regierung des Königs Josaphat von Juda und regierte zwölf Jahre.

Nowe Iehoram the sonne of Ahab beganne to reigne ouer Israel in Samaria, the eighteenth yeere of Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, and reigned twelue yeeres.

2 Er tat, was dem HERRN mißfiel, jedoch nicht so schlimm wie sein Vater und seine Mutter; denn er entfernte die Götzensäule Baals, die sein Vater hatte aufstellen lassen,

And he wrought euill in the sight of the Lord, but not like his father nor like his mother: for he tooke away the image of Baal that his father had made.

3 aber an dem sündhaften Stierdienst Jerobeams, des Sohnes Nebats, zu dem er Israel verführt hatte, hielt er fest und ließ nicht davon ab.

Neuerthelesse, he cleaued vnto the sinnes of Ieroboam, the sonne of Nebat, which made Israel to sinne, and departed not therefrom.

4 Da Mesa, der König der Moabiter, Schafzüchter war, hatte er dem König von Israel hunderttausend Lämmer und die Wolle von hunderttausend Widdern als regelmäßige Abgabe zu entrichten.

Then Mesha King of Moab had store of sheepe, and rendred vnto the King of Israel an hundreth thousande lambes, and an hundreth thousande rammes with the wooll.

5 Aber nach Ahabs Tode fiel der König der Moabiter vom König von Israel ab.

But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the King of Israel.

6 Da zog der König Joram zu jener Zeit aus Samaria aus und bot ganz Israel zum Kriege auf;

Therefore King Iehoram went out of Samaria the same season, and nombred all Israel,

7 gleichzeitig schickte er eine Gesandtschaft an den König Josaphat von Juda und ließ ihm sagen: »Der König der Moabiter ist von mir abgefallen: willst du nicht mit mir gegen die Moabiter zu Felde ziehen?« Er antwortete: »Ja, ich will mitziehen; ich will sein wie du: mein Volk wie dein Volk, meine Rosse wie deine Rosse!«

And went, and sent to Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, saying, The King of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou goe with me to battell against Moab? And he answered, I will goe vp: for I am, as thou art, my people, as thy people, and mine horses as thine horses.

8 Als er dann fragte: »Welchen Weg wollen wir einschlagen?«, erwiderte jener: »Den Weg durch die Steppe von Edom.«

Then said he, What way shall we goe vp? And he answered, The way of the wildernesse of Edom.

9 So zog denn der König von Israel mit dem König von Juda und dem König der Edomiter aus. Als sie aber sieben Tagemärsche zur Umgehung zurückgelegt hatten, fehlte es dem Heere und dem Vieh, das mit ihnen zog, an Wasser.

So went the King of Israel and the king of Iudah, and the King of Edom, and when they had compassed the way seuen dayes, they had no water for the hoste, nor for the cattell that followed them.

10 Da rief der König von Israel aus: »Wehe! So hat also der HERR diese drei Könige zum Kriege aufgeboten, um sie in die Hand der Moabiter fallen zu lassen!«

Therefore the King of Israel sayde, Alas, that the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hand of Moab.

11 Nun fragte Josaphat: »Ist denn hier kein Prophet des HERRN, durch den wir den HERRN befragen können?« Da antwortete einer von den Hofleuten des Königs von Israel: »Hier ist Elisa, der Sohn Saphats, der als Diener bei Elia gelebt hat.«

But Iehoshaphat saide, Is there not here a Prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire of the Lord by him? And one of the King of Israels seruants answered, and said, Here is Elisha the sonne of Shaphat, which powred water on the handes of Eliiah.

12 Josaphat sagte: »Ja wirklich, bei dem ist das Wort des HERRN zu finden!« Als sich nun der König von Israel und Josaphat und der König der Edomiter zu ihm hinabbegeben hatten,

Then Iehoshaphat saide, The worde of the Lord is with him. Therefore the King of Israel, and Iehoshaphat, and the King of Edom went downe to him.

13 sagte Elisa zum König von Israel: »Was habe ich mit dir zu schaffen? Wende dich doch an die Propheten deines Vaters und an die Propheten deiner Mutter!« Aber der König von Israel entgegnete ihm: »Nicht doch! Hat etwa der HERR diese drei Könige zum Krieg aufgeboten, um sie in die Hand der Moabiter fallen zu lassen?«

And Elisha sayde vnto the King of Israel, What haue I to doe with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father and to the prophets of thy mother. And the King of Israel saide vnto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hande of Moab.

14 Da sagte Elisa: »So wahr der HERR der Heerscharen lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe! Wenn ich nicht auf den König Josaphat von Juda Rücksicht nähme, so würde ich dich wahrlich nicht beachten und dich keines Blickes würdigen!

Then Elisha said, As the Lord of hostes liueth, in whose sight I stande, if it were not, that I regarde the presence of Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah, I woulde not haue looked towarde thee, nor seene thee.

15 Nun aber schafft mir einen Saitenspieler her!« Als dann der Saitenspieler die Saiten rührte, kam die Hand des HERRN über ihn,

But nowe bring me a minstrel. And when the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came vpon him.

16 und er sagte: »So hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Macht in diesem Tal Grube an Grube!‹

And he saide, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.

17 Denn so hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Ihr werdet keinen Wind wahrnehmen und keinen Regen sehen, und doch wird sich dieses Tal mit Wasser füllen, so daß ihr samt eurem Heer und eurem Vieh trinken könnt.

For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall neither see winde nor see raine, yet the valley shalbe filled with water, that ye may drinke, both ye and your cattel, and your beastes.

18 Aber dies genügt dem HERRN noch nicht: er wird euch auch noch die Moabiter in die Hände liefern,

But this is a small thing in the sight of the Lord: for he will giue Moab into your hande.

19 so daß ihr alle festen Städte erobern, alle Fruchtbäume fällen, alle Wasserquellen verschütten und alles gute Ackerland mit Steinen verderben werdet.‹«

And ye shall smite euery strong towne and euery chiefe citie, and shall fell euery faire tree, and shall stoppe all the fountaines of water, and marre euery good fielde with stones.

20 Und wirklich, am folgenden Morgen zu der Zeit, wo man das Speisopfer darbringt, kam plötzlich Wasser von Edom her geflossen, so daß die ganze Gegend überschwemmt wurde.

And in the morning whe the meat offring was offred, beholde, there came water by the way of Edom: and the countrey was filled with water.

21 Als nun das ganze Volk der Moabiter hörte, daß die Könige herangezogen waren, um sie zu bekriegen, wurde alles, was die Waffen tragen konnte, aufgeboten, ja sogar die noch nicht Waffenfähigen, und sie stellten sich an der Grenze auf.

And when al the Moabites heard that the Kings were come vp to fight against them, they gathered all that was able to put on harnesse, and vpwarde, and stood in their border.

22 Als aber am folgenden Morgen früh die Sonne beim Aufgang über das Wasser hin strahlte, erschien den Moabitern das Wasser drüben rot wie Blut,

And they rose earely in the morning, when the sunne arose vpon the water, and the Moabites saw the water ouer against them, as red as blood.

23 so daß sie ausriefen: »Das ist Blut! Gewiß sind die Könige mit dem Schwert aneinandergeraten und haben ein Blutbad unter sich angerichtet: jetzt an die Beute, Moabiter!«

And they saide, This is blood the Kings are surely slaine, and one hath smitten another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoyle.

24 Als sie aber an das israelitische Lager herankamen, machten die Israeliten einen Ausfall und schlugen die Moabiter in die Flucht, drangen dann immer weiter ins Land ein und schlugen die Moabiter aufs neue.

And when they came to the host of Israel, the Israelites arose vp, and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them, but they inuaded them, and smote Moab.

25 Die Städte zerstörten sie, auf alles gute Ackerland warfen sie ein jeder seinen Stein, so daß es ganz damit bedeckt war, alle Wasserquellen verschütteten sie und hieben alle Fruchtbäume um, bis nichts mehr übrig war als (die Stadt) Kir-Hareseth mit ihrer festen Steinmauer. Als dann die Schleuderer die Stadt umzingelten und beschossen

And they destroyed the cities: and on all the good field euery man cast his stone, and filled them and they stopt all the fountaines of water, and felled all the good trees: onely in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof: howebeit they went about it with slings, and smote it.

26 und der König der Moabiter einsah, daß er dem Angriff nicht gewachsen sei, nahm er siebenhundert mit Schwertern bewaffnete Krieger mit sich, um sich zum König der Edomiter durchzuschlagen; aber es gelang ihnen nicht.

And when the King of Moab saw that the battel was too sore for him, he tooke with him seuen hudreth men that drew the sword, to break through vnto the King of Edom: but they could not.

27 Da nahm er seinen erstgeborenen Sohn, der ihm dereinst in der Regierung nachfolgen sollte, und brachte ihn auf der Mauer als Brandopfer dar. Da kam ein gewaltiger Zorn über Israel, so daß sie die Belagerung aufhoben und in ihr Land zurückkehrten.

Then he tooke his eldest sonne, that should haue reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offring vpon the wall: so that Israel was sore grieued, and they departed from him, and returned to their countrey.
