Job 9
1 Hiob antwortete und sprach:
Then Job answered and said,
2 Ja wohl, ich weiß, daß es so ist, - wie könnte der Mensch je Recht behalten gegen Gott!
“I truly know that this is so. But how can a person be in the right with God?
3 Wenn er geruhte, mit ihm zu streiten, - nicht auf eins von Tausend könnt' er ihm erwidern!
If he wants to argue with God, he cannot answer him once in a thousand times.
4 Der weisen Sinnes und von gewaltiger Kraft ist - wer hat ihm je getrotzt und blieb unversehrt?
God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has ever hardened himself against him and succeeded?—
5 Er, der unvermerkt Berge versetzt, indem er sie umstürzt in seinem Grimm;
he who removes the mountains without warning anyone when he overturns them in his anger—
6 der die Erde aufbeben macht von ihrer Stätte, daß ihre Säulen ins Wanken geraten,
he who shakes the earth out of its place and sets its supports trembling.
7 der der Sonne verbietet, aufzustrahlen, und die Sterne unter Siegel legt;
It is the same God who tells the sun not to rise, and it does not, and who covers up the stars,
8 der den Himmel ausspannt allein und einher schreitet auf den Höhen des Meers,
who by himself stretches out the heavens and tramples down the waves of the sea,
9 der den Bären schuf, den Orion und die Pleiaden und die Kammern des Südens;
who makes the Bear, Orion, the Pleiades, and the constellations of the south.
10 der große Dinge thut, die unerforschlich, und Wunder, die nicht aufzuzählen sind.
He does great and unsearchable things, and wonderful things that cannot be counted.
11 Fürwahr, er zieht an mir vorüber, aber ich sehe ihn nicht; er schwebt dahin, aber ich gewahre ihn nicht.
See, he goes by me, and I do not see him; he passes on also, but I do not perceive him.
12 Rafft er hinweg, wer will ihm wehren? Wer darf zu ihm sprechen: “Was thust du da?”
If he takes something away, who can stop him? Who can say to him, 'What are you doing?'
13 Gott wehrt nicht seinem Zorn - krümmten sich doch Rahabs Helfer unter ihm! -
God will not withdraw his anger; the helpers of Rahab bow beneath him.
14 geschweige, daß ich ihm erwidern dürfte, ihm gegenüber meine Worte wählen könnte,
How much less could I answer him, could I choose words to reason with him?
15 der ich, auch wenn ich Recht habe, keine Antwort bekomme, zu meinem Widerpart um Gnade flehen muß.
Even if I were righteous, I could not answer him; I could only plead for mercy with my judge.
16 Wenn ich ihn riefe und er gäbe mir Antwort, so würde ich's doch nicht glauben, daß er mich anhören werde.
Even if I called and he answered me, I would not believe that he was listening to my voice.
17 Vielmehr, im Sturmwind würde er mich anschnauben und meine Wunden ohne Ursach' mehren,
For he breaks me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause.
18 würde mich nimmer aufatmen lassen, sondern mich sättigen mit bitterem Weh.
He does not allow me to regain my breath; but he fills me with bitterness.
19 Gilt's Kraft des Starken, so ist er da, aber gilt's den Rechtsweg - “wer darf mich vorfordern?”
If it is a matter of strength, behold, he is mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?
20 Wär' ich im Recht - mein Mund würde mich verdammen, wäre ich unschuldig - er würde mich zum Betrüger machen!
Though I am in the right, my own mouth would condemn me; and though I am blameless, my words would prove me to be guilty.
21 Unschuldig bin ich - was kümmert mich mein Leben! ich verachte mein Dasein!
I am blameless, but I do not care any more about myself; I despise my own life.
22 Eins ist es, drum spreche ich's aus: er bringt den Frommen wie den Frevler um!
It makes no difference, which is why I say that he destroys blameless people and wicked people together.
23 Wenn die Geißel jählings tötet, so lacht er über die Verzweiflung Unschuldiger.
When a whip suddenly kills, he mocks the despair of the innocent.
24 Die Erde ist in der Frevler Hand gegeben, die Augen ihrer Richter hält er zu: wenn er nicht - wer denn sonst?
The earth is given into the hand of wicked people; God covers the faces of its judges. If it is not he who does it, then who is it?
25 und meine Tage eilten schneller dahin, als ein Läufer, entflohen, ohne Glück geschaut zu haben,
My days are swifter than a running messenger; my days flee away; they see no good anywhere.
26 fuhren dahin wie Binsenkähne, wie ein Adler, der auf Beute stößt.
They are as fast as papyrus reed boats, and as fast as the eagle that swoops down on its victim.
27 Wenn ich denke: Ich will meinen Jammer vergessen, will meinen Unmut lassen und heiter blicken,
If I said that I would forget about my complaints, that I would take off my sad face and be happy,
28 so schaudre ich vor allen meinen Schmerzen: ich weiß, daß du mich nicht lossprechen wirst.
I would be afraid of all my sorrows because I know that you will not consider me innocent.
29 Ich, ich soll schuldig sein, wozu mich da noch vergeblich abmühen?
I will be condemned; why, then, should I try in vain?
30 Wenn ich mich auch mit Schnee wüsche und meine Hände mit Lauge reinigte,
If I washed myself with snow water and made my hands ever so clean,
31 so würdest du mich in den Pfuhl eintauchen, daß meine Kleider vor mir Abscheu hätten.
God would plunge me in a ditch, and my own clothes would be disgusted with me.
32 Denn er ist nicht ein Mensch wie ich, daß ich ihm Antwort geben, daß wir miteinander vor Gericht treten könnten.
For God is not a man, as I am, that I could answer him, that we could come together in court.
33 Kein Schiedsmann ist zwischen uns, der auf uns beide seine Hand legen könnte.
There is no judge between us who might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Er nehme seinen Stock von mir hinweg und lasse seinen Schrecken mich nicht ängstigen,
There is no other judge who could take God's rod off me, who could keep his terror from frightening me.
35 so will ich reden, ohne ihn zu fürchten, denn so steht es mit meinem Innern nicht!
Then would I speak up and not fear him. But as things are now, I cannot do that.
