Romains 7

1 Ignorez-vous, mes frères (je parle à ceux qui connaissent la loi), que la loi ne domine sur l’homme que pendant le temps qu’il vit?

Are you ignorant, brothers—for to those knowing law I speak—that the law has lordship over the man as long as he lives?

2 Car la femme, qui est soumise à un mari, le mari vivant, est liée par la loi; mais si son mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi du mari.

For the married woman to the living husband has been bound by law, and if the husband may die, she has been free from the law of the husband;

3 Donc, son mari vivant, elle sera appelée adultère, si elle s’unit à un autre homme; mais si son mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi du mari, de sorte qu’elle n’est point adultère, si elle s’unit à un autre homme.

so then, the husband being alive, she will be called an adulteress if she may become another man’s; and if the husband may die, she is free from the law, so as not to be an adulteress, having become another man’s.

4 Ainsi, mes frères, vous aussi vous êtes morts à la loi par le corps du Christ, pour être à un autre qui est ressuscité d’entre les morts, afin que nous portions des fruits pour Dieu.

So that, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of the Christ, for your becoming another’s, who was raised up out of the dead, that we might bear fruit to God;

5 Car, lorsque nous étions dans la chair, les passions du péché qui étaient occasionnées par la loi agissaient dans nos membres, en sorte qu’elles leur faisaient produire des fruits pour la mort;

for when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, that [are] through the Law, were working in our members, to bear fruit to death;

6 Mais maintenant nous sommes affranchis de la loi de mort dans laquelle nous étions retenus, afin que nous servions dans la nouveauté de l’esprit, et non dans la vétusté de la lettre.

and now we have ceased from the Law, that being dead in which we were held, so that we may serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.

7 Que dirons-nous donc? La loi est-elle péché? Point du tout. Mais je n’ai connu le péché que par la loi; car je ne connaîtrais pas la concupiscence si la loi n’eût dit: Tu ne convoiteras point.

What, then, will we say? The Law [is] sin? Let it not be! But I did not know sin except through law, for also the covetousness I had not known if the Law had not said:

8 Or, prenant occasion du commandement, le péché a opéré en moi toute concupiscence. Car sans la loi, le péché était mort.

“You will not covet”; and sin having received an opportunity, through the command, worked in me all covetousness—for apart from law sin is dead.

9 Et moi je vivais autrefois sans loi. Mais quand est venu le commandement, le péché a revécu.

And I was alive apart from law once, and the command having come, sin revived, and I died;

10 Et moi je suis mort; et il s’est trouvé que ce commandement qui devait me donner la vie a causé ma mort.

and the command that [is] for life, this was found by me for death;

11 Ainsi le péché, prenant occasion du commandement, m’a séduit, et par lui m’a tué.

for sin, having received an opportunity, through the command, deceived me, and through it, slew [me],

12 Ainsi la loi est sainte, et le commandement saint, juste et bon.

so that the Law, indeed, [is] holy, and the command holy, and righteous, and good.

13 Ce qui est bon est donc devenu pour moi la mort? Loin de là; car le péché, pour paraître péché, a, par une chose bonne, opéré la mort, de sorte qu’il est devenu par le commandement une source extrêmement abondante dépêché.

That which is good then, has it become death to me? Let it not be! But sin, that it might appear sin, through the good, working death to me, that sin might become exceedingly sinful through the command.

14 Car nous savons que la loi est spirituelle, et moi je suis charnel, vendu comme esclave au péché.

For we have known that the Law is spiritual, and I am fleshly, sold by sin;

15 Aussi ce que je fais, je ne le comprends pas; car le bien que je veux, je ne le fais pas, mais le mal que je hais, je le fais.

for that which I work, I do not acknowledge; for not what I will, this I practice, but what I hate, this I do.

16 Or si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, j’acquiesce à la loi comme étant bonne.

And if what I do not will, this I do, I consent to the Law that [it is] good,

17 Ainsi ce n’est plus moi qui fais cela, mais le péché qui habite en moi.

and now it is no longer I that work it, but sin dwelling in me,

18 Car je sais que le bien n’habite pas en moi, c’est-à-dire dans ma chair. En effet, le vouloir réside en moi, mais accomplir le bien, je ne l’y trouve pas.

for I have known that there does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh, good: for to will is present with me, and I do not find to work that which is right,

19 Ainsi le bien que je veux, je ne le fais point; mais le mal que je ne veux pas, je le fais.

for the good that I will, I do not do; but the evil that I do not will, this I practice.

20 Si donc je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n’est pas moi qui le fais, mais le péché qui habite en moi.

And if what I do not will, this I do, it is no longer I that work it, but sin that is dwelling in me.

21 Je trouve donc, quand je veux faire le bien, cette loi, parce que le mal réside en moi;

I find, then, the law, that when I desire to do what is right, the evil is present with me,

22 Je me complais dans la loi de Dieu, selon l’homme intérieur;

for I delight in the Law of God according to the inward man,

23 Mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi qui combat la loi de mon esprit, et me captive sous la loi du péché, laquelle est dans mes membres.

and I behold another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin that [is] in my members.

24 Malheureux homme que je suis, qui me délivrera du corps de cette mort?

A wretched man I [am]! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?

25 La grâce de Dieu par Jésus-Christ Notre Seigneur. Ainsi j’obéis moi-même par l’esprit à la loi de Dieu, et par la chair à la loi du péché.

I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord; so then, I myself indeed serve the Law of God with the mind, and with the flesh, the law of sin.
