Exode 14
1 Or le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant:
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], saying,
2 Dis aux enfants d’Israël qu’ils retournent, et qu’ils campent vis-à-vis de Phihahiroth, qui est entre Magdalum et la mer, contre Béelséphon: c’est la vue de ce lieu que vous poserez votre camp, près de la mer.
“Speak to the children of Israel [God prevails], that they turn back and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal Zephon. You shall encamp opposite it by the sea.
3 Car Pharaon va dire des enfants d’Israël: Ils sont resserrés dans la terre, le désert les tient enfermés.
Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel [God prevails], ‘They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.’
4 Et j’endurcirai son cœur, et il les poursuivra; et je serai glorifié en Pharaon et en toute son armée; et les Egyptiens sauront que je suis le Seigneur. Et les enfants d’Israël firent ainsi.
I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies; and the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] shall know that I am Adonai.” They did so.
5 Cependant on annonça au roi des Egyptiens que le peuple s’était enfui, et le cœur de Pharaon et de ses serviteurs fut changé à l’égard du peuple; et ils dirent: Qu’avons-nous voulu faire en laissant aller Israël, pour qu’il ne nous servît plus?
The king of Egypt [Abode of slavery] was told that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel [God prevails] go from serving us?”
6 Il attela donc son char, et prit tout son peuple avec lui.
He prepared his chariot, and took his army with him;
7 Il emmena aussi, outre six cents chars d’élite, tout ce qu’il y eut de chars dans l’Egypte, et les chefs de toute l’armée.
and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt [Abode of slavery], and captains over all them.
8 Et le Seigneur endurcit le cœur de Pharaon, roi d’Egypte, et il poursuivit les enfants d’Israël; mais eux étaient sortis par une main élevée.
Adonai hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt [Abode of slavery], and he pursued the children of Israel [God prevails]; for the children of Israel [God prevails] went out with a high hand.
9 Et comme les Egyptiens suivaient leurs traces de près, ils les trouvèrent dans leur camp près de la mer: toute la cavalerie et les chars de Pharaon et l’armée entière étaient à Phihahiroth contre Béelséphon.
The Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] pursued them. All the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Zephon.
10 Et quand Pharaon se fut approché, les enfants d’Israël, levant les yeux, virent les Egyptiens derrière eux, et ils furent saisis d’une grande crainte, et ils crièrent au Seigneur,
When Pharaoh came near, the children of Israel [God prevails] lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] were marching after them; and they were very afraid. The children of Israel [God prevails] cried out to Adonai.
11 Et ils dirent à Moïse: Peut-être qu’il n’y avait pas de sépultures en Egypte; c’est pour cela que tu nous a amenés, afin que nous mourions dans le désert: qu’as-tu voulu faire en nous retirant de la terre d’Egypte?
They said to Moses [Drawn out], “Because there were no graves in Egypt [Abode of slavery], have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us out of Egypt [Abode of slavery]?
12 N’est-ce pas là le langage que nous te tenions en Egypte, disant: Retire-toi de nous, afin que nous servions les Egyptiens? car il valait beaucoup mieux les servir que mourir dans le désert.
Is not this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt [Abode of slavery], saying, ‘Leave us alone, that we may abad ·serve· the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery]?’ For it were better for us to abad ·serve· the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery], than that we should die in the wilderness.”
13 Or Moïse répondit au peuple: Ne craignez point, demeurez fermes, et voyez les grandes œuvres que le Seigneur va faire aujourd’hui; car les Egyptiens que vous voyez en ce moment, vous ne les verrez plus jamais.
Moses [Drawn out] said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand still, and see the yishu'ah ·salvation· of Adonai, which he will work for you today: for the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] whom you have seen today, you shall never see them again.
14 Le Seigneur combattra pour vous, et vous serez dans le silence.
Adonai will fight for you, and you shall be still.”
15 Le Seigneur dit ensuite à Moïse: Pourquoi cries-tu vers moi? Dis aux enfants d’Israël qu’ils partent.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Israel [God prevails], that they go forward.
16 Mais toi, élève ta verge, et étends ta main sur la mer, et divise-la, afin que les enfants d’Israël marchent au milieu de la mer à sec.
Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel [God prevails] shall go into the middle of the sea on dry ground.
17 Pour moi, j’endurcirai le cœur des Egyptiens, afin qu’ils vous poursuivent, et je serai glorifié en Pharaon, et en toute son armée, et en ses chars et en ses cavaliers
Behold, I myself will harden the hearts of the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery], and they shall go in after them: and I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.
18 Et les Egyptiens sauront que moi, je suis le Seigneur, quand j’aurai été glorifié en Pharaon, et en ses chars et en ses cavaliers.
The Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] shall know that I am Adonai, when I have gotten myself honor over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.”
19 Alors l’ange de Dieu qui précédait le camp d’Israël, alla derrière eux; et ainsi que lui, la colonne de nuée, passant de devant en arrière,
Ha mal'ak Elohim [The Angel of God], who went before the camp of Israel [God prevails], moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them.
20 Se tint entre le camp des Egyptiens et le camp d’Israël; or la nuée était ténébreuse, et elle éclairait la nuit; en sorte que durant tout le temps de la nuit, ils ne pouvaient s’approcher l’un de l’autre.
It came between the camp of Egypt [Abode of slavery] and the camp of Israel [God prevails]; and there was the cloud and the darkness, yet gave it light by night: and one didn’t come near the other all night.
21 Lors donc que Moïse eut étendu la main sur la mer, le Seigneur la fit retirer, un vent impétueux et brûlant ayant soufflé toute la nuit, et il la mit à sec, et l’eau fut divisée.
Moses [Drawn out] stretched out his hand over the sea, and Adonai caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
22 Ainsi les enfants d’Israël entrèrent au milieu de la mer desséchée; car l’eau était comme un mur à leur droite et à leur gauche.
The children of Israel [God prevails] went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.
23 Et les poursuivant, les Egyptiens entrèrent après eux au milieu de la mer, ainsi que toute la cavalerie de Pharaon, ses chars et ses cavaliers.
The Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] pursued, and went in after them into the middle of the sea: all of Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.
24 Et déjà était venue la veille du matin, et voilà que le Seigneur jetant un regard sur le camp des Égyptiens à travers la colonne de feu et de nuée, tua toute leur armée,
In the morning watch, Adonai looked out on the Egyptian [person from Abode of slavery] army through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and confused the Egyptian [person from Abode of slavery] army.
25 Et renversa les roues des chars, ils furent entraînés au profond de la mer. Les Égyptiens dirent donc: Fuyons Israël, car le Seigneur combat pour eux contre nous.
He took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] said, “Let’s flee from the face of Israel [God prevails], for Adonai fights for them against the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery]!”
26 Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Étends ta main sur la mer, afin que les eaux retournent vers les Égyptiens, sur leurs chars et leurs cavaliers.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery], on their chariots, and on their horsemen.”
27 Et lorsque Moïse eut étendu sa main contre la mer, elle retourna au premier point du jour en son premier lieu; et les eaux vinrent à la rencontre des Égyptiens qui s’enfuyaient, et le Seigneur les enveloppa au milieu des flots.
Moses [Drawn out] stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea teshuvah ·completely returned· to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] fled against it. Adonai overthrew the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] in the middle of the sea.
28 Ainsi les eaux retournèrent et couvrirent les chars et les cavaliers de toute l’armée de Pharaon, qui poursuivant Israël, étaient entrés dans la mer: et il ne resta pas même un seul d’entre eux.
The waters teshuvah ·completely returned·, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Pharaoh’s army that went in after them into the sea. There remained not so much as one of them.
29 Mais les enfants d’Israël poursuivirent leur chemin au milieu de la mer desséchée, et les eaux étaient pour eux comme un mur à droite et à gauche:
But the children of Israel [God prevails] walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.
30 Et le Seigneur délivra en ce jour-là Israël de la main des Egyptiens.
Thus Adonai saved Israel [God prevails] that day out of the hand of the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery]; and Israel [God prevails] saw the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery] dead on the seashore.
31 Et ils virent les Égyptiens morts sur le rivage de la mer, et la main puissante qu’avait étendue le Seigneur contre eux: et le peuple craignit le Seigneur, et ils crurent au Seigneur et à Moïse son serviteur.
Israel [God prevails] saw the great work which Adonai did to the Egyptians [people from Abode of slavery], and the people feared Adonai; and they trusted in Adonai, and in his servant Moses [Drawn out].
