Luc 14
1 Un jour de sabbat, Jésus entra dans la maison d'un des principaux pharisiens pour y manger; et on l'observait.
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath, that they watched him.
2 Comme il se trouvait avoir devant lui un homme hydropique,
And, behold, there was a certain man before him who had the dropsy.
3 il prit la parole, et s'adressant aux docteurs de la Loi et aux pharisiens, il leur dit: «Est-il permis, oui ou non, de guérir au jour du sabbat?»
And Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?
4 Ils gardèrent le silence. Alors Jésus saisissant l'hydropique, le guérit, et le renvoya.
And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
5 Puis, prenant la parole, il dit: «Qui de vous, si son fils ou son boeuf vient à tomber dans un puits, ne l'en retire aussitôt, le jour du sabbat?»
And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?
6 Et ils ne surent que lui répondre.
And they could not answer him again to these things.
7 Ayant remarqué que les conviés choisissaient les premières places, il leur adressa cette comparaison:
And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the best places; saying to them,
8 «Quand on t'invitera à des noces, ne prends pas la première place, de peur qu'il ne se trouve parmi les invités un homme plus considéré que toi,
When thou art invited by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the best place; lest a more honourable man than thou be invited by him;
9 et que celui qui vous aura invités, l'un et l'autre, ne te dise: «Cède-lui la place, » car alors tu auras la confusion d'aller occuper la dernière place.
And he that invited thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.
10 Mais, lorsqu'on t'invite, va te mettre à la dernière place, et, quand celui qui t'a invité viendra, il te dira: «Cher ami, monte plus haut; » alors ce sera pour toi un honneur aux yeux des autres convives.
But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour in the presence of them that sit eating with thee.
11 Car quiconque s'élève, sera abaissé; et quiconque s'abaisse, sera élevé.»
For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
12 Il disait aussi à celui qui l'avait invité: «Quand tu donnes à dîner ou à souper, n'invite ni tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni tes voisins riches, de peur qu'ils ne t'invitent aussi a leur tour et ne te rendent la pareille.
Then said he also to him that invited him, When thou givest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
13 Mais, quand tu donnes un repas, invite les pauvres, les estropiés, les boiteux, les aveugles,
But when thou givest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 et tu seras heureux de ce qu'ils ne peuvent te le rendre: cela te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes.»
And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
15 Un des convives, qui avait entendu ces recommandations, lui dit: «Heureux celui qui sera a table dans le royaume de Dieu!»
And when one of them that sat eating with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Jésus lui dit: «Un homme donna un grand souper, et y convia beaucoup de monde.
Then said he to him, A certain man gave a great supper, and invited many:
17 A l'heure du souper, il envoya son serviteur dire aux invités: «Venez, car tout est prêt.»
And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were invited, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 Et ils se mirent à s'excuser tout d'une voix. Le premier lui dit: «J'ai acheté un champ, et je suis forcé de sortir pour le voir; je te prie de m'excuser.»
And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 Un autre dit: «J'ai acheté cinq paires de boeufs, et je vais les essayer; je te prie de m'excuser.»
And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them out: I pray thee have me excused.
20 Un autre dit: «Je viens de me marier, ainsi je n'y puis aller.»
And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 Le serviteur étant de retour, rapporta ces refus à son maître. Alors le maître de la maison, irrité, dit à son serviteur: «Va vite dans les places et dans les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles, les boiteux.»
So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind.
22 Le serviteur de retour, dit: «Maître, tes ordres ont été exécutés, et il y a encore de la place.»
And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 Et le maître dit à son serviteur: «Va dans les chemins et le long des haies, et presse les gens d'entrer, afin que ma maison soit pleine;
And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 car je vous déclare qu'aucun de ceux qui avaient été conviés, ne goûtera de mon souper.»
For I say to you, That none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.
25 Comme une foule considérable cheminait avec Jésus, il se retourna, et lui dit:
And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said to them,
26 «Si quelqu'un vient à moi, et ne hait pas son père, sa mère, sa femme, ses enfants, ses frères et ses soeurs, bien plus, s'il ne hait pas sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple;
If any man cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 et quiconque ne porte pas sa croix et ne me suit pas, ne peut être mon disciple.
And whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 Car quel est celui d'entre vous, qui, voulant bâtir une tour, ne s'asseye premièrement pour calculer la dépense, et pour voir s'il a de quoi en venir à bout?
For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he hath sufficient to finish it?
29 de peur qu'après avoir posé les fondements de l'édifice, il ne puisse l'achever, et que tous ceux qui le verront ne se mettent à se moquer de lui,
Lest perhaps, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
30 et à dire: «Cet homme a commencé à bâtir, et il n'a pu achever.»
Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Ou bien, quel est le roi, qui, étant sur le point d'aller livrer bataille à un autre roi, ne s'asseye premièrement pour délibérer, et pour voir s'il peut, avec dix mille hommes, marcher à la rencontre d'un ennemi qui s'avance contre lui avec vingt mille?
Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 Autrement, pendant que celui-ci est encore éloigné, il lui envoie une ambassade pour négocier la paix.
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth a delegation, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 De même, quiconque d'entre vous ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède, ne peut être mon disciple.
So likewise, whoever he is of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
34 C'est donc une bonne chose que le sel; mais si le sel aussi devient insipide, avec quoi lui donnera-t-on de la saveur?
Salt is good: but if the salt hath lost its savour, how shall it be seasoned?
35 Il n'est bon ni pour la terre ni pour le fumier: on le jette dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende.»
It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
