Genèse 35
1 Dieu dit ensuite à Jacob: Lève-toi, pars pour Béthel, établis là ta demeure et élève en ce lieu un autel au Dieu qui t'y est apparu, lorsque tu fuyais Esaü ton frère.
God said to Jacob [Supplanter], “Arise, go up to Beth-el [House of God], and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau [Hairy] your brother.”
2 Jacob alors dit aux siens et à tous ceux qui étaient avec lui: Faites disparaître du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers qui s'y trouvent; purifiez- vous et changez de vêtement.
Then Jacob [Supplanter] said to his household, and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign deities that are among you, purify yourselves, change your garments.
3 Puis, levons-nous, allons à Béthel; nous y bâtirons un autel au Dieu qui m'a exaucé en un jour d'affliction, à celui qui fut avec moi, et qui m'a sauvé dans la voie où je marchais.
Let us arise, and go up to Beth-el [House of God]. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.”
4 Ils donnèrent donc à Jacob les dieux étrangers qui étaient entre leurs mains, ainsi que les pendants d'oreilles. Jacob les enfouit sous le térébinthe des Sécimes, et on ne les a jamais retrouvés jusqu'à ce jour.
They gave to Jacob [Supplanter] all the foreign deities which were in their hands, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob [Supplanter] hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 Israël décampa de la terre des Sécimes, et une terreur causée par Dieu tomba sur toutes les villes des alentours, en sorte que les fils de Jacob ne furent point poursuivis.
They traveled, and a terror of God was on the cities that were around them, and they didn’t pursue the sons of Jacob [Supplanter].
6 Et Jacob ainsi que tout le peuple qui étais avec lui arrivèrent à Luza, la même que Béthel, en la terre de Chanaan.
So Jacob [Supplanter] came to Luz (that is, Beth-el [House of God]), which is in the land of Canaan [Humbled], he and all the people who were with him.
7 Il y bâtit un autel, et il donna à ce lieu le nom de Béthel, parce que c'est là que le Seigneur lui était paru, quand il fuyait Esaü son frère.
He built an altar there, and called the place El Beit-El [God of House of God]; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 Cependant Déborra, la nourrice de Rachel, mourut, et elle fut ensevelie sous un chêne au-dessous de Béthel, et Jacob nomma l'arbre Chêne de deuil.
Deborah, Rebekah [Securely bound]’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Beth-el [House of God] under the oak; and its name was called Allon Bacuth.
9 Or, Dieu apparut encore à Jacob en Luza, à son retour de la Mésopotamie Syrienne, et Dieu le bénit,
God appeared to Jacob [Supplanter] again, when he came from Paddan Aram [Elevated], and blessed him.
10 Et lui dit: Tu ne t'appelleras plus Jacob, mais ton nom sera Israël. Et il s'appela Israël.
God said to him, “Your name is Jacob [Supplanter]. Your name shall not be Jacob [Supplanter] any more, but your name will be Israel [Wrestles with God / God prevails].” He named him Israel [God prevails].
11 Dieu lui dit: Je suis ton Dieu: crois et multiplie; des nations et des réunions de nations proviendront de toi, et des rois sortiront de tes reins.
God said to him, “I am El Shaddai [God Almighty]. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body.
12 La terre que j'ai donnée à Abraham et Isaac, je te la donne; elle sera à toi, et après toi je donnerai cette terre à ta race.
The land which I gave to Abraham [Father of a multitude] and Isaac [Laughter], I will give it to you, and to your offspring after you will I give the land.”
13 Après quoi, Dieu s'éloigna de lui et du lieu où il avait parlé.
God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.
14 Aussitôt, Jacob, au lieu même où Dieu lui avait parlé, dressa une colonne de pierre sur laquelle il répandit des libations et versa de l'huile.
Jacob [Supplanter] set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it.
15 Et il nomma Béthel le lieu où Dieu lui avait parlé.
Jacob [Supplanter] called the name of the place where God spoke with him “Beth-el [House of God]”.
16 Ensuite ayant décampé de Béthel, Jacob, dressa ses tentes au delà de la tour de Gader. Comme il approchait de Habrath pour arriver en Éphratha, Rachel enfanta, et elle souffrit beaucoup dans l'enfantement.
They traveled from Beth-el [House of God]. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel [Ewe sheep] travailed. She had hard labor.
17 Il advint, pendant qu'elle enfantait ainsi péniblement, que la sage-femme lui dit: Prends courage, c'est un fils.
When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for now you will have another son.”
18 Or, au moment où son âme allait la quitter, car elle mourut, elle lui donna le nom de Fils de ma douleur (Bénoni), mais le père l'appela Benjamin.
As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south].
19 Rachel mourut donc et fut ensevelie sur le chemin de l'hippodrome d'Éphratha, aujourd'hui Bethléem.
Rachel [Ewe sheep] died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem [House of Bread]).
20 Et Jacob dressa sur son sépulcre une colonne qu'on nomme encore aujourd'hui: Colonne du sépulcre de Rachel.
Jacob [Supplanter] set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel [Ewe sheep]’s grave to this day.
Israel [God prevails] traveled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22 Or, tandis qu'Israël demeurait en cette terre, Ruben s'éloigna et dormit avec Balla, concubine de son père Jacob. Israël apprit le fait et l'eut en abomination. Or, les fils de Jacob étaient douze.
While Israel [God prevails] lived in that land, Reuben [See, a son!] went and lay with Bilhah [Bashful], his father’s concubine, and Israel [God prevails] sh'ma ·heard obeyed· of it. Now the sons of Jacob [Supplanter] were twelve.
23 Fils de Lia: premier-né de Jacob, Ruben, puis Siméon, Lévi, Issachar et Zabulon;
The sons of Leah [Weary]: Reuben [See, a son!] (Jacob [Supplanter]’s firstborn), Simeon [Hearing], Levi [United with], Judah [Praised], Issachar [Hire, Reward], and Zebulun [Living together].
24 Fils de Rachel, Joseph et Benjamin
The sons of Rachel [Ewe sheep]: Joseph [May he add] and Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south].
25 Fils de Balla, servante de Rachel, Dan et Nephthali;
The sons of Bilhah [Bashful] (Rachel [Ewe sheep]’s servant): Dan [He judged] and Naphtali [My wrestling].
26 Fils de Zelpha, servante de Lia, Gad et Aser: tels sont les fils de Jacob qui lui naquirent en la Mésopotamie Syrienne.
The sons of Zilpah [Frailty] (Leah [Weary]’s servant): Gad [Good fortune] and Asher [Happy]. These are the sons of Jacob [Supplanter], who were born to him in Paddan Aram [Elevated].
27 Jacob alla ensuite en Membré, auprès d'Isaac son père, dans la ville de la plaine qui est Hébron, en la terre de Chanaan, où Abraham et Isaac furent passagers.
Jacob [Supplanter] came to Isaac [Laughter] his father, to Mamre [Bitter, Fatness], to Kiriath Arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham [Father of a multitude] and Isaac [Laughter] lived as foreigners.
28 Bientôt les jours que vécut Isaac formèrent cent-quatre-vingts ans.
The days of Isaac [Laughter] were one hundred eighty years.
29 Isaac mourut, et il se réunit à son peuple, âgé et plein de jours; ses fils Esaü et Jacob l'ensevelirent.
Isaac [Laughter] gave up the spirit, and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau [Hairy] and Jacob [Supplanter], his sons, buried him.
