Psaumes 8

1 Au chef des chantres. Sur la Ghitit. Psaume de David. Eternel, notre Seigneur! que ton nom est glorieux par toute la terre! car tu as répandu ta majesté sur les cieux.

To the Chief Musician. On "the Gittith." A Melody of David. O Yahweh, our Lord! How majestic is thy Name, in all the earth, Who hast set thy splendour upon the heavens.

2 Par la bouche des enfants et des nourrissons tu as fondé ta puissance. En dépit de tes détracteurs, tu réduis à l’impuissance ennemis et adversaires rancuniers.

Out of the mouth of children and sucklings, hast thou laid a foundation of strength, —because of thine adversaries, to make foe and avenger be still.

3 Lorsque je contemple tes cieux, œuvre de ta main, la lune et les étoiles que tu as formées…

When I view thy heavens, the work, of thy fingers, moon and stars, which thou hast established,

4 Qu’est donc l’homme, que tu penses à lui? Le fils d’Adam, que tu le protèges?

What was weak man, that thou shouldst make mention of him? or the son of the earthborn, that thou shouldst set him in charge?

5 Pourtant tu l’as fait presque l’égal des êtres divins; tu l’as couronné de gloire et de magnificence!

That thou shouldst make him little less than messengers of God, with glory and honour, shouldst crown him?

6 tu lui as donné l’empire sur les œuvres de tes mains, et mis tout à ses pieds:

Shouldst give him dominion over the works of thy hands, —All things, shouldst have put under his feet:

7 brebis et taureaux, tous ensemble, et aussi les bêtes des champs,

Sheep and oxen, all of them, —yea even the beasts of the field;

8 oiseaux du ciel et poissons de la mer, ce qui parcourt les routes des océans.

The bird of the heavens, and the fishes of the sea, — the passer-by on the paths of the seas?

9 Eternel, notre Seigneur! que ton nom est glorieux par toute la terre!

O Yahweh, our Lord! How majestic is thy Name, in all the earth.
