Néhémie 1
1 Paroles de Néhémie, fils de Hacalia. Au mois de Chislev de la vingtième année, comme je me trouvais dans le palais de Suse,
The words of Nehemiah the son of Chachalyah. And it came to pass in the month Kislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan, the capital,
2 Hanani, l'un de mes frères, arriva, lui et quelques hommes de Juda, et je les interrogeai sur les Juifs qui s'étaient échappés, sur ceux qui restaient de la captivité, et sur Jérusalem.
That there came Chanani, one of my brethren, himself with certain men of Judah: and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
3 Ils me répondirent: « Les restes de la captivité qui sont restés dans la province sont dans une grande détresse et dans l'opprobre. La muraille de Jérusalem est aussi détruite, et ses portes sont brûlées par le feu. »
And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great misery and in disgrace; and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and her gates are burnt with fire.
4 Lorsque j'entendis ces paroles, je m'assis et je pleurai, et je fus en deuil pendant plusieurs jours; Je jeûnai et je priai devant le Dieu des cieux,
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned some days, and I was fasting, and praying before the God of heaven.
5 et je dis: « Je t'en supplie, Yahvé, le Dieu des cieux, le Dieu grand et redoutable qui garde l'alliance et la bonté envers ceux qui l'aiment et qui gardent ses commandements,
And I said, I beseech thee, O Lord the God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth the covenant and kindness for those that love him and for those that keep his commandments:
6 que ton oreille soit attentive et tes yeux ouverts, afin que tu puisses écouter la prière de ton serviteur que je fais devant toi en ce moment, jour et nuit, pour les enfants d'Israël, tes serviteurs, tandis que je confesse les péchés des enfants d'Israël que nous avons commis contre toi. Oui, moi et la maison de mon père avons péché.
Let thy ear now be attentive, and thy eyes be open, I entreat thee, to hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, which I am praying this day before thee, by day and by night, in behalf of the children of Israel thy servants, and [as] I confess for the sins of the children of Israel, [with] which we have sinned against thee: yea, I also and my father's house have sinned.
7 Nous nous sommes montrés très corrompus envers toi, et nous n'avons pas observé les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu avais prescrits à ton serviteur Moïse.
We have dealt very corruptly toward thee: and we have not kept the commandments, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou didst command Moses thy servant.
8 « Souviens-toi, je t'en prie, de la parole que tu as donnée à Moïse, ton serviteur, en disant: « Si vous commettez une infidélité, je vous disperserai parmi les peuples;
Remember, I beseech thee, the word with which thou didst charge Moses thy servant, saying, If ye become truly unfaithful, I will indeed scatter you among the nations.
9 mais si vous revenez à moi, si vous gardez mes commandements et si vous les mettez en pratique, quand vos exilés seraient à l'extrémité des cieux, je les rassemblerai de là et je les amènerai dans le lieu que j'ai choisi, pour y faire résider mon nom ».
But if ye return unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them: [then] though your outcasts should be at the utmost parts of heaven, from there will I gather them, and I will bring them unto the place which I have chosen to let my name dwell there.
10 « Voici tes serviteurs et ton peuple, que tu as rachetés par ta grande puissance et par ta main forte.
And they are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.
11 Seigneur, je t'en prie, que ton oreille soit maintenant attentive à la prière de ton serviteur, et à la prière de tes serviteurs qui aiment à craindre ton nom; fais prospérer aujourd'hui ton serviteur, et accorde-lui la miséricorde aux yeux de cet homme. » J'étais le porteur de coupe du roi.
I beseech thee, O Lord, do let thy ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who are desirous to fear thy name; and grant success, I pray thee, to thy servant this day, and let him find mercy in the sight of this man —But I was butler by the king.
