Esdras 10

1 Pendant qu'Esdras priait et se confessait, pleurant et se prosternant devant la maison de Dieu, une très grande assemblée d'hommes, de femmes et d'enfants s'assembla auprès de lui de la part d'Israël, car le peuple pleurait très amèrement.

Now when 'Ezra prayed, and when he made his confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there gathered themselves unto him out of Israel a very large assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept exceedingly much.

2 Shecania, fils de Jehiel, l'un des fils d'Élam, répondit à Esdras: « Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu et nous avons épousé des femmes étrangères parmi les peuples du pays. Mais maintenant, il y a de l'espoir pour Israël à ce sujet.

Thereupon commenced Shechanyah the son of Jechiel, of the sons of 'Elam, and said unto 'Ezra, we have indeed trespassed against our God, and have brought home strange wives of the nations of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

3 Maintenant, faisons donc alliance avec notre Dieu pour répudier toutes les femmes et celles qui sont nées d'elles, selon le conseil de mon seigneur et de ceux qui tremblent devant l'ordre de notre Dieu. Qu'il en soit fait selon la loi.

And now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the direction of the Lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God: and let it be done according to the law.

4 Lève-toi, car l'affaire est entre tes mains et nous sommes avec toi. Prends courage, et fais-le. »

Arise; for this matter is obligatory upon thee; and we will be with thee: be strong, and do it.

5 Alors Esdras se leva et fit jurer aux chefs des prêtres, aux lévites et à tout Israël qu'ils feraient selon cette parole. Et ils jurèrent.

Then arose 'Ezra, and caused the princes of the priests, the Levites, and of all Israel, to swear to do according to this word. And they swore.

6 Esdras se leva de devant la maison de Dieu et entra dans la chambre de Jehohanan, fils d'Eliashib. Quand il y arriva, il ne mangea pas de pain et ne but pas d'eau, car il était en deuil à cause de la faute des exilés.

Then arose 'Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jochanan the son of Elyashib; and he went thither without having eaten bread, or having drunk water; for he was mourning because of the trespass of the exiles.

7 On publia dans tout Juda et Jérusalem une annonce à tous les enfants de la captivité, pour qu'ils se rassemblent à Jérusalem,

And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the exile, to gather themselves together at Jerusalem;

8 et que quiconque ne viendrait pas dans les trois jours, selon le conseil des princes et des anciens, perdrait tous ses biens, et serait lui-même séparé de l'assemblée des captifs.

And that whosoever should not come within three days, according to the resolve of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be devoted, and himself separated from the congregation of the exiles.

9 Et tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours. C'était le neuvième mois, le vingtième jour du mois; et tout le peuple était assis sur la place large, devant la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de cette affaire et à cause de la grande pluie.

Then were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together unto Jerusalem within three days: it was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the open place before the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and by reason of the showers of rain.

10 Le prêtre Esdras se leva et leur dit: « Vous avez commis une faute, vous avez épousé des femmes étrangères, et vous avez aggravé la culpabilité d'Israël.

And 'Ezra the priest rose up, and said unto them, Ye have acted unfaithfully, and have brought home strange wives, to increase yet more the guiltiness of Israel.

11 Maintenant, confessez-vous à Yahvé, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté. Séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères. »

Now therefore make confession unto the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his will; and separate yourselves from the nations of the earth, and from the strange wives.

12 Alors toute l'assemblée répondit d'une voix forte: « Nous devons faire ce que tu as dit à notre sujet.

Then answered all the assembly and said with a loud voice, So be it: according to thy word it is our duty to do.

13 Mais le peuple est nombreux, et c'est un temps de grande pluie, et nous ne pouvons pas rester dehors. Ce n'est pas l'œuvre d'un jour ou deux, car nous avons beaucoup transgressé dans cette affaire.

But the people are many, and it is the rainy season, and we have not the strength to remain in the street, nor is this a work for one day or for two days; for we are many that have transgressed in this matter.

14 Maintenant, que nos chefs soient désignés pour toute l'assemblée, et que tous ceux qui sont dans nos villes et qui ont épousé des femmes étrangères viennent à des heures fixes, et avec eux les anciens de chaque ville et ses juges, jusqu'à ce que l'ardente colère de notre Dieu se détourne de nous, jusqu'à ce que cette affaire soit résolue. »

Let however our princes stand forward for all the congregation, and let all those in our cities who have brought home strange wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each and every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God be turned away from us for this whole matter.

15 Seuls Jonathan, fils d'Asahel, et Jahzeia, fils de Tikva, s'y opposèrent; Meshullam et Shabbethai, le Lévite, les aidèrent.

Only Jonathan the son of 'Assahel and Jachzeyah the son of Thikvah withstood this [proposal]: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite assisted them.

16 Les enfants de la captivité firent ainsi. Le prêtre Esdras, avec certains chefs de famille, selon les maisons de leurs pères, et tous selon leurs noms, furent mis à part; ils s'assirent le premier jour du dixième mois pour examiner la question.

And the children of the exile did so. And then were set apart 'Ezra the priest, [and] certain chiefs of the divisions, for their family divisions, and all of them [designated] by their names; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

17 Ils en finirent avec tous les hommes qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères, le premier jour du premier mois.

And they made an end with all, with the men that had brought home strange wives, not before the first day of the first month.

18 Parmi les fils des prêtres, il s'en trouvait qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères: des fils de Jeshua, fils de Jozadak, et de ses frères: Maaséja, Éliézer, Jarib et Guedalia.

And there were found among the sons of the priests that had brought home strange wives, namely, of the sons of Jeshua' the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Ma'asseyah, and Eli'ezer, and Jarib, and Gedalyah.

19 Ils donnèrent leur main pour répudier leurs femmes; et, étant coupables, ils offrirent un bélier du troupeau pour leur faute.

And they gave their hand to put away their wives, and being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their trespass.

20 Des fils d'Immer: Hanani et Zebadiah.

And of the sons of Immer: Chanani, and Zebadyah.

21 Des fils de Harim: Maaséja, Élie, Shemahia, Jehiel et Ozias.

And of the sons of Charim: Ma'asseyah, and Elijah, and Shema'yah, and Jechiel, and 'Uzziyah.

22 Des fils de Pashhur: Elioénaï, Maaséja, Ismaël, Nethanel, Jozabad et Elasah.

And of the sons of Pashchur: Elyo'enai, Ma'asseyah. Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and El'assah.

23 Parmi les Lévites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (appelé aussi Kelita), Pethahiah, Juda et Eliezer.

Also of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shim'i, and Kelayan, the same is Kelita, Pethachyah, Judah, and Eli'ezer.

24 Des chanteurs: Eliashib. Des gardiens: Shallum, Telem, et Uri.

And of the singers, Elyashib; and of the gate-keepers, Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

25 D'Israël: Des fils de Parosh: Ramia, Izzia, Malkija, Mijamin, Eléazar, Malkija et Benaja.

And of Israel: Of the sons of Par'osh, Ramyah, and Yizziyah, and Malkiyah, and Miyamin, and El'azar, and Malkiyah, and Benayah.

26 Des fils d'Elam: Mattania, Zacharie, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth et Élie.

And of the sons of 'Elam; Matthanyah, Zecharyah, and Jechiel, and 'Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliyah.

27 Des fils de Zattu: Eliœnai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad et Aziza.

And of the sons of Zatthu: Elyo'enai, Elyashib, Matthanyah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and 'Aziza.

28 Des fils de Bébaï: Jehohanan, Hanania, Zabbai et Athlaï.

And of the sons of Bebai: Jehochanan, Chananyah, Zabbai, and 'Athlai.

29 Des fils de Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal et Jeremoth.

And of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and 'Adayah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.

30 Des fils de Pahathmoab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui et Manassé.

And of the sons of Pachath-moab: 'Adna, and Kelal, Benayah, Ma'asseyah, Matthanyah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Menasseh.

31 Des fils de Harim: Éliézer, Ischija, Malkija, Schemaeja, Shimeon,

And of the sons of Charim: Eli'ezer, Yishiyah, Malkiyah, Shema'yah, Shim'on,

32 Benjamin, Malluch et Shemaria.

Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemaryah.

33 Des fils de Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh et Shimei.

Of the sons of Chashum: Matthenai, Matthathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Menasseh, and Shim'i.

34 Des fils de Bani: Maadaï, Amram, Uel,

Of the sons of Bani: Ma'adai, 'Amram, and Uel,

35 Benaja, Bedeja, Cheluhi,

Benayah, Bedeyah, Keluhu,

36 Vania, Meremoth, Eliashib,

Vanyah, Meremoth, Elyashib,

37 Mattania, Mattenai, Jaasu,

Matthanyah, Matthenai, and Ja'assai,

38 Bani, Binnui, Shimei,

And Bani, and Binnui, and Shim'i,

39 Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah,

And Shelemyah, and Nathan, and 'Adayah,

40 Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai,

Machnadbai, Shashai, Sharai,

41 Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah,

'Asar'el, and Shelemyahu, Shemaryah,

42 Shallum, Amaria, et Joseph.

Shallum, Amaryah, and Joseph.

43 Des fils de Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Iddo, Joël et Benaja.

Of the sons of Nebo: Je'iel, Matthithyah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, Benayah.

44 Tous ceux-là avaient pris des femmes étrangères. Certains d'entre eux avaient des femmes dont ils avaient des enfants.

All these had taken strange wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
