Josué 4
1 Lorsque toute la nation eut entièrement traversé le Jourdain, Yahvé parla à Josué et dit:
And it came to pass when the whole nation had completely gone over the Jordan, that Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying,
2 « Prenez douze hommes parmi le peuple, un homme de chaque tribu,
Take you twelve men out of the people, one man out of every tribe,
3 et donnez-leur cet ordre: « Prenez au milieu du Jourdain, à l'endroit où les pieds des prêtres se sont arrêtés, douze pierres, emportez-les avec vous et posez-les à l'endroit où vous camperez cette nuit ».
and command them, saying, Take up hence out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place where ye shall lodge this night.
4 Alors Josué appela les douze hommes qu'il avait préparés parmi les enfants d'Israël, un homme de chaque tribu.
And Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had appointed of the children of Israel, a man out of every tribe;
5 Josué leur dit: « Traversez devant l'arche de Yahvé votre Dieu jusqu'au milieu du Jourdain, et chacun de vous ramassera une pierre et la mettra sur son épaule, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d'Israël.
and Joshua said to them, Pass before the ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of the Jordan, and lift up each of you a stone [and put it] upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,
6 Ce sera un signe parmi vous, et lorsque vos enfants demanderont plus tard: « Que signifient ces pierres? »
that this may be a sign in your midst. When your children ask hereafter, saying, What mean ye by these stones?
7 vous leur répondrez: « Parce que les eaux du Jourdain ont été coupées devant l'arche de l'alliance de Yahvé. Quand elle a traversé le Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain ont été coupées. Ces pierres serviront de mémorial aux enfants d'Israël pour toujours ».
then ye shall say to them, That the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it went through the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
8 Les enfants d'Israël firent ce que Josué avait ordonné et ils enlevèrent douze pierres du milieu du Jourdain, comme Yahvé l'avait dit à Josué, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d'Israël. Ils les transportèrent avec eux jusqu'au lieu où ils campaient, et les y déposèrent.
And the children of Israel did so, as Joshua had commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the lodging-place, and laid them down there.
9 Josué dressa douze pierres au milieu du Jourdain, à l'endroit où se tenaient les pieds des prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance; elles y sont encore aujourd'hui.
And twelve stones did Joshua set up in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant had stood firm; and they are there to this day.
10 Car les prêtres qui portaient l'arche se tinrent au milieu du Jourdain jusqu'à ce que soit achevé tout ce que Yahvé avait ordonné à Josué de dire au peuple, selon tout ce que Moïse avait ordonné à Josué; et le peuple se hâta de passer.
And the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah had commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hasted and passed over.
11 Lorsque tout le peuple eut complètement traversé, l'arche de Yahvé traversa avec les prêtres en présence du peuple.
And it came to pass, when all the people had completely gone over, that the ark of Jehovah went over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.
12 Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé passèrent armés devant les enfants d'Israël, comme Moïse le leur avait dit.
And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, went over in array before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.
13 Environ quarante mille hommes, prêts et armés pour la guerre, passèrent devant l'Éternel pour combattre, dans les plaines de Jéricho.
About forty thousand armed for military service passed over before Jehovah to the war, unto the plains of Jericho.
14 Ce jour-là, l'Éternel magnifia Josué aux yeux de tout Israël, et ils le craignirent, comme ils avaient craint Moïse, tous les jours de sa vie.
On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.
15 Yahvé parla à Josué et dit:
And Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying,
16 « Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l'arche de l'alliance de sortir du Jourdain. »
Command the priests who bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.
17 Josué donna cet ordre aux sacrificateurs: « Montez du Jourdain! »
And Joshua commanded the priests, saying, Come up out of the Jordan.
18 Lorsque les prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance de Yahvé furent sortis du milieu du Jourdain, et que la plante des pieds des prêtres fut levée sur la terre sèche, les eaux du Jourdain retournèrent à leur place et passèrent par-dessus toutes ses rives, comme auparavant.
And it came to pass when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of Jehovah had come up out of the midst of the Jordan, [when] the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up on to the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and they flowed as previously, over all its banks.
19 Le peuple sortit du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et il campa à Guilgal, à la frontière orientale de Jéricho.
And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the eastern extremity of Jericho.
20 Josué dressa à Gilgal les douze pierres qu'ils avaient prises dans le Jourdain.
And those twelve stones which they had taken out of the Jordan did Joshua set up in Gilgal.
21 Il parla aux enfants d'Israël et dit: « Lorsque vos enfants demanderont un jour à leurs pères: « Que signifient ces pierres? »
And he spoke to the children of Israel, saying, When your children hereafter ask their fathers, saying, What [mean] these stones?
22 Vous le ferez savoir à vos enfants en disant: « Israël a passé ce Jourdain à sec.
then ye shall let your children know, saying, On dry land did Israel come over this Jordan;
23 Car Yahvé ton Dieu a mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant toi jusqu'à ce que tu aies traversé, comme Yahvé ton Dieu l'a fait pour la mer Rouge, qu'il a mise à sec devant nous jusqu'à ce que nous l'ayons traversée,
because Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye had passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over;
24 afin que tous les peuples de la terre sachent que la main de Yahvé est puissante, et que vous craigniez Yahvé votre Dieu pour toujours. »
that all peoples of the earth might know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye might fear Jehovah your God continually.
