Deutéronome 1
1 Telles sont les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël, de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans la plaine qui fait face à Souf, entre Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hatséroth et Dizahab.
These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain, opposite to Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
2 Il y a onze jours de voyage depuis Horeb, par le chemin de la montagne de Séir, jusqu'à Kadesh Barnea.
There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.
3 La quarantième année, le onzième mois, le premier jour du mois, Moïse parla aux enfants d'Israël, selon tout ce que Yahvé lui avait commandé,
And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that Jehovah had given him in command to them;
4 après avoir frappé à Édréi Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Heshbon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui habitait à Ashtaroth.
after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtaroth [and] at Edrei.
5 Au-delà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença à proclamer cette loi, en disant:
On this side the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to unfold this law, saying,
6 « Yahvé notre Dieu nous a parlé à Horeb, en disant: Vous avez assez vécu sur cette montagne.
Jehovah our God spoke unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have stayed long enough in this mountain.
7 Tournez-vous, partez, et allez dans la montagne des Amoréens et dans tous les lieux voisins: dans la plaine, dans la montagne, dans la plaine, dans le midi, au bord de la mer, dans le pays des Cananéens et au Liban, jusqu'au grand fleuve, le fleuve Euphrate.
Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill-country of the Amorites, and unto all the neighbouring places in the plain, in the mountain, and in the lowland, and in the south, and by the seaside, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
8 Voici, j'ai mis le pays devant toi. Allez-y et prenez possession du pays que Yahvé a juré à vos pères - à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob - de leur donner, à eux et à leur descendance après eux.'"
Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah swore unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
9 Je vous ai parlé en ce temps-là, en disant: « Je ne suis pas capable de vous porter moi-même tout seul.
And I spoke unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone.
10 L'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a multiplié, et voici que tu es aujourd'hui comme les étoiles du ciel pour la multitude.
Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
11 Que Yahvé, le Dieu de tes pères, te rende mille fois plus nombreux que toi et te bénisse, comme il te l'a promis!
Jehovah, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you as he hath said unto you!
12 Comment pourrais-je, à moi seul, supporter vos problèmes, vos fardeaux et vos querelles?
How can I myself alone sustain your wear, and your burden, and your strife?
13 Prenez des hommes sages et intelligents, respectés dans vos tribus, et je les établirai à votre tête. »
Provide you wise and understanding and known men, according to your tribes, that I may make them your chiefs.
14 Tu m'as répondu et tu as dit: « Ce que tu as dit est bon à faire. »
And ye answered me, and said, The thing that thou hast spoken is good [for us] to do.
15 J'ai pris les chefs de vos tribus, des hommes sages et respectés, et je les ai établis chefs sur vous, chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquièmes, chefs de dizaines, et officiers, selon vos tribus.
So I took the chiefs of your tribes, wise men and known, and made them chiefs over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers for your tribes.
16 En ce temps-là, je donnai cet ordre à vos juges: « Entendez les causes entre vos frères et jugez avec équité entre un homme et son frère, et l'étranger qui habite avec lui.
And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, Hear [the causes] between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and him also that sojourneth with him.
17 Vous ne ferez pas preuve de partialité dans votre jugement; vous entendrez le petit comme le grand. Tu ne craindras pas la face de l'homme, car c'est à Dieu qu'appartient le jugement. Le cas qui est trop difficile pour toi, tu me l'apporteras, et je l'entendrai. »
Ye shall not respect persons in judgment: ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God's; and the matter that is too hard for you shall ye bring to me, that I may hear it.
18 En ce temps-là, je vous commandai toutes les choses que vous deviez faire.
And I commanded you at that time all the things that ye should do.
19 Nous partîmes d'Horeb et traversâmes tout ce grand et terrible désert que tu as vu, en prenant le chemin de la montagne des Amoréens, comme l'avait ordonné l'Éternel, notre Dieu, et nous arrivâmes à Kadès Barnea.
And we departed from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw, on the way to the mountain of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God had commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
20 Je vous ai dit: « Vous êtes arrivés à la montagne des Amoréens, que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God giveth us.
21 Voici, l'Éternel, votre Dieu, a mis le pays devant vous. Montez, prenez-en possession, comme vous l'a dit Yahvé, le Dieu de vos pères. N'aie pas peur et ne sois pas consterné. »
Behold, Jehovah thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as Jehovah the God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.
22 Vous vous êtes approchés de moi, chacun d'entre vous, et vous avez dit: « Envoyons des hommes devant nous, afin qu'ils explorent le pays pour nous, et qu'ils nous rapportent le chemin par lequel nous devons monter, et les villes où nous devons arriver. »
And ye came near to me all of you, and said, We will send men before us, who shall examine the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and of the cities to which we shall come.
23 La chose m'a plu. Je pris douze de vos hommes, un homme pour chaque tribu.
And the matter was good in mine eyes; and I took twelve men of you, one man for a tribe.
24 Ils se retournèrent, montèrent dans la montagne, arrivèrent à la vallée d'Eschcol et l'explorèrent.
And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.
25 Ils prirent dans leurs mains une partie des fruits du pays et nous les rapportèrent. Ils nous rapportèrent des nouvelles, et dirent: « C'est un bon pays que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne. »
And they took of the fruit of the land in their hand, and brought it down unto us, and brought us answer, and said, The land is good that Jehovah our God hath given us.
26 Pourtant, vous n'avez pas voulu monter, mais vous vous êtes rebellés contre le commandement de l'Éternel, votre Dieu.
But ye would not go up, and rebelled against the word of Jehovah your God;
27 Vous murmuriez dans vos tentes, et vous disiez: « Parce que l'Éternel nous haïssait, il nous a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, pour nous livrer entre les mains des Amoréens et nous faire périr.
and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
28 Où allons-nous monter? Nos frères nous ont fait fondre le cœur en disant: 'Le peuple est plus grand et plus fort que nous. Les villes sont grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel. Et nous y avons vu les fils des Anakim ».
Whither shall we go up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt, saying, [They are] a people greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.
29 Alors je vous ai dit: « Ne soyez pas terrifiés. N'aie pas peur d'eux.
And I said unto you, Be not afraid, neither fear them;
30 Yahvé ton Dieu, qui marche devant toi, combattra pour toi, selon tout ce qu'il a fait pour toi en Égypte sous tes yeux,
Jehovah your God who goeth before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
31 et dans le désert où tu as vu comment Yahvé ton Dieu t'a porté, comme un homme porte son fils, dans tout le chemin que tu as parcouru, jusqu'à ce que tu sois arrivé en ce lieu. »
and in the wilderness where thou hast seen that Jehovah thy God bore thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came to this place.
32 Mais vous n'avez pas cru en cela Yahvé, votre Dieu,
But In this thing ye did not believe Jehovah your God,
33 qui vous a précédés en chemin pour vous chercher un lieu où dresser vos tentes, la nuit dans le feu pour vous montrer le chemin, le jour dans la nuée.
who went in the way before you, to search you out a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.
34 L'Éternel a entendu la voix de vos paroles, il s'est mis en colère et il a juré, en disant:
And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying,
35 Aucun de ces hommes de cette génération mauvaise ne verra le bon pays que j'ai juré de donner à vos pères,
None among these men, this evil generation, shall in any wise see that good land, which I swore to give unto your fathers!
36 excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné. Il le verra. Je donnerai le pays qu'il a foulé à lui et à ses enfants, parce qu'il a entièrement suivi Yahvé. »
Except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah.
37 Yahvé s'est mis en colère contre moi à cause de vous, en disant: « Toi non plus, tu n'y entreras pas.
Also Jehovah was angry with me on your account, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
38 C'est Josué, fils de Nun, qui se tient devant vous, qui y entrera. Encouragez-le, car c'est lui qui fera hériter Israël.
Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: strengthen him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
39 Tes petits enfants, dont tu disais qu'ils seraient capturés ou tués, tes enfants qui aujourd'hui ne savent ni le bien ni le mal, y entreront. Je la leur donnerai, et ils la posséderont.
And your little ones, of whom ye said, They shall be a prey, and your children, who this day know neither good nor evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
40 Mais vous, tournez-vous, et partez pour le désert, sur le chemin de la mer Rouge. »
But ye, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
41 Alors vous avez répondu et vous m'avez dit: « Nous avons péché contre Yahvé. Nous monterons et nous combattrons, selon tout ce que Yahvé notre Dieu nous a ordonné. » Chacun de vous revêtit ses armes de guerre et se mit à monter dans la montagne.
— And ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God hath commanded us. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and ye would go presumptuously up the hill.
42 Yahvé me dit: « Dis-leur: « Ne montez pas et ne combattez pas, car je ne suis pas au milieu de vous, de peur que vous ne soyez frappés devant vos ennemis. »"
And Jehovah said to me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
43 Je vous ai donc parlé, et vous n'avez pas écouté; vous vous êtes rebellés contre le commandement de l'Éternel, vous avez été présomptueux, et vous êtes montés dans la montagne.
And I spoke unto you, but ye would not hear, and ye rebelled against the word of Jehovah, and acted presumptuously, and went up the hill.
44 Les Amoréens, qui habitaient cette montagne, sortirent contre vous, vous poursuivirent comme les abeilles, et vous battirent en Séir, jusqu'à Horma.
And the Amorite that dwelt on that hill came out against you, and chased you, like as bees do, and cut you in pieces in Seir, as far as Hormah.
45 Vous êtes revenus et vous avez pleuré devant l'Éternel, mais l'Éternel n'a pas écouté votre voix et ne vous a pas prêté l'oreille.
And ye returned and wept before Jehovah, but Jehovah would not listen to your voice, nor give ear unto you.
46 Vous restâtes donc à Kadès de nombreux jours, selon les jours où vous êtes restés.
And ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode [there].
