Judges 9
1 Abimelech son of Jerub Baal went to his mother's relatives at Shechem and he said to them and to the whole clan of his mother's family,
Y fuése Abi-melec, hijo de Jerubaal, a Siquem a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:
2 “Please say this, so that all the leaders in Shechem may hear, 'Which is better for you, that all seventy sons of Jerub Baal rule over you, or that just one rule over you?' Remember that I am your bone and your flesh.”
Yo os ruego que habléis a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: ¿Qué tenéis por mejor, que os señoreen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerubaal, o que os señoree un varón? Acordáos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.
3 His mother's relatives spoke for him to the leaders of Shechem, and they agreed to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem todas estas palabras: y el corazón de ellos se inclinó tras Abi-melec, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.
4 They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech used it to hire men of lawless and reckless character, who followed him.
Y diéronle setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abi-melec alquiló varones ociosos y vagabundos que le siguieron.
5 Abimelech went to his father's house at Ophrah, and upon one stone he murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub Baal. Only Jotham was left, the youngest son of Jerub Baal, for he hid himself.
Y viniendo a la casa de su padre a Efra, mató a sus hermanos los hijos de Jerubaal, setenta varones, sobre una piedra: mas quedó Joatam el más pequeño hijo de Jerubaal, que se escondió.
6 All the leaders of Shechem and Beth Millo came together and they went and made Abimelech king, beside the oak near the pillar which is in Shechem.
Y juntados todos los señores de Siquem, con toda la casa de Mello, fueron y eligieron a Abi-melec por rey cerca de la llanura de la estatua que estaba en Siquem.
7 When Jotham was told about this, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He shouted and said to them, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.
Lo cual como fue dicho a Joatam, fue, y púsose en la cumbre del monte de Garizim, y alzando su voz clamó, y díjoles: Oídme varones de Siquem, que Dios os oiga:
8 The trees once went out to anoint a king over them. For they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.'
Fueron los árboles a elegir rey sobre sí; y dijeron a la oliva: Reina sobre nosotros.
9 But the olive tree said to them, 'Should I give up my oil, which is used to honor gods and mankind, so I may go return, just to sway over the other trees?'
Mas la oliva les respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi grosura con la cual por mi causa Dios y los hombres son honrados, por ir, y ser grande sobre los árboles?
10 The trees said to the fig tree, 'Come and reign over us.'
Y dijeron los árboles a la higuera: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.
11 But the fig tree said to them, 'Should I give up my sweetness and my good fruit, just so I could return and sway over the other trees?'
Y respondióles la higuera: ¿Tengo de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, por ir, y ser grande sobre los árboles?
12 The trees said to the vine, 'Come and reign over us.'
Dijeron pues los árboles a la vid: Anda pues tú, reina sobre nosotros.
13 The vine said to them, 'Should I give up my new wine, which cheers gods and mankind, and return and sway over the other trees?'
Y la vid les respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, por ir y ser grande sobre los árboles?
14 Then said all the trees to the thornbush, 'Come and reign over us.'
Dijeron pues todos los árboles al escaramujo: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.
15 The thornbush said to the trees, 'If you truly want to anoint me as king over you, then come and find safety under my shade. If not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and let it burn up the cedars of Lebanon.'
Y el escaramujo respondió a los árboles: Si con verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, veníd, y aseguráos debajo de mi sombra, y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que trague los cedros del Líbano.
16 Now therefore, if you have acted in truth and honesty, when you made Abimelech king, and if you have done well concerning Jerub Baal and his house, and if you have punished him as he deserves—
Ahora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey a Abi-melec; y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerubaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos:
17 —and to think that my father fought for you, risked his life, and rescued you out of the hand of Midian—
(Pues que mi padre peleó por vosotros, y echó su alma lejos por libraros de mano de Madián,
18 but today you have risen up against my father's house and have killed his sons, seventy persons, upon one stone. Then you have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative.
Y vosotros os levantasteis hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y matasteis a sus hijos, setenta varones, sobre una piedra: y habéis puesto sobre los señores de Siquem por rey a Abi-melec hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano: )
19 If you acted with honesty and integrity with Jerub Baal and his house, then you should rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.
Si con verdad y con integridad habéis hecho hoy con Jerubaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abi-melec: y él goce de vosotros:
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and burn up the men of Shechem and Beth Millo. Let fire come out from the men of Shechem and Beth Millo, to burn up Abimelech.”
Y si no, fuego salga de Abi-melec que consuma a los señores de Siquem, y la casa de Mello: y fuego salga de los señores de Siquem y de la casa de Mello que consuma a Abi-melec.
21 Jotham fled and ran away, and he went to Beer. He lived there because it was far away from Abimelech, his brother.
Y huyó Joatán, huyó, y fuése a Beer, y allí se estuvo por causa de Abi-melec su hermano.
22 Abimelech ruled over Israel for three years.
Y después que Abi-melec hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años,
23 God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem. The leaders of Shechem betrayed the trust they had with Abimelech.
Envió Dios un espíritu malo entre Abi-melec, y entre los señores de Siquem, que los de Siquem se levantaron contra Abi-melec,
24 God did this so the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerub Baal might be avenged, and Abimelech their brother would be held responsible for murdering them, and the men of Shechem would be held responsible because they helped him murder his brothers.
Para que el agravio de los setenta hijos de Jerubaal viniese: y para que las sangres de ellos fuesen puestas sobre Abi-melec su hermano, que los mató: y sobre los señores de Siquem, que corroboraron las manos de él para matar sus hermanos.
25 So the leaders of Shechem positioned men to lie in wait on the hilltops that they might ambush him, and they robbed all who passed by them along that road. This was reported to Abimelech.
Y los señores de Siquem le pusieron asechadores en las cumbres de los montes, que salteaban a todos los que pasaban cerca de ellos por el camino: de lo cual fue dado aviso a Abi-melec.
26 Gaal son of Ebed came with his relatives and they went over to Shechem. The leaders of Shechem had confidence in him.
Y vino Gaal hijo de Obed con sus hermanos, y pasáronse a Siquem: y los señores de Siquem se aseguraron con él:
27 They went out into the field and gathered grapes from the vineyards, and they trampled on them. They held a festival in the house of their god, where they ate and drank, and they cursed Abimelech.
Y saliendo al campo vendimiaron sus viñas, y lagarearon, e hicieron alegrías: y entrando en el templo de sus dioses comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abi-melec.
28 Gaal son of Ebed, said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerub Baal? Is Zebul not his officer? Serve the men of Hamor, Shechem's father! Why should we serve Abimelech?
Y Gaal hijo de Obed dijo: ¿Quién es Abi-melec, y quién es Siquem para que nosotros sirvamos a él? ¿No es hijo de Jerubaal? ¿Y Zebul no es su asistente? Servíd a los varones de Jemor padre de Siquem. ¿Por qué le habíamos de servir a él?
29 I wish that this people were under my command! Then would I remove Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, 'Call out all your army.'”
¡Quién diese a este pueblo debajo de mi mano, que luego echaría a Abi-melec! Y decía a Abi-melec: Aumenta tus escuadrones, y sal.
30 When Zebul, the official of the city, heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed his anger was kindled.
Y Zebul asistente de la ciudad, oyendo las palabras de Gaal hijo de Obed, encendióse su ira.
31 He sent messengers to Abimelech in order to deceive, saying, “See, Gaal son of Ebed and his relatives are coming to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you.
Y envió astutamente mensajeros a Abi-melec, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Obed, y sus hermanos, han venido a Siquem, y he aquí que han cercado la ciudad contra ti.
32 Now, get up during the night, you and the soldiers with you, and prepare an ambush in the fields.
Levántate pues ahora de noche tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscada en el campo.
33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and make a raid on the city. When he and the people with him come out against you, do whatever you can to them.”
Y por la mañana al salir del sol levantarte has, y acometerás la ciudad; y él y el pueblo que está con él saldrán contra ti: y tú harás con él según que se te ofrecerá.
34 So Abimelech got up during the night, he and all the men who were with him, and they set an ambush against Shechem—dividing into four units.
Levantándose pues de noche Abi-melec, y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías.
35 Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the city gate. Abimelech and the men who were with him came out of their hiding place.
Y Gaal hijo de Obed salió, y púsose a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad: y Abi-melec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, se levantaron de la emboscada.
36 When Gaal saw the men, he said to Zebul, “See, men are coming down from the hilltops!” Zebul said to him, “You are seeing the shadows on the hills like they are men.”
Y viendo Gaal el pueblo, dijo a Zebul: He allí pueblo que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Y Zebul le respondió: La sombra de los montes, te parece hombres.
37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, men are coming down in the middle of the land, and one unit is coming by way of the oak of the diviners.”
Mas Gaal tornó a hablar, y dijo: He allí pueblo que desciende por medio de la tierra: y un escuadrón viene por el camino de la campaña de Meonenim.
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where are your proud words now, you who said, 'Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?' Are these not the men you despised? Go out now and fight against them.”
Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora tu dicho que decías: Quién es Abi-melec, para que sirvamos a él? ¿Este no es el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él.
39 Gaal went out and he was leading the men of Shechem, and he fought Abimelech.
Y Gaal salió delante de los señores de Siquem y peleó contra Abi-melec.
40 Abimelech chased him, and Gaal fled before him. Many fell with deadly wounds before the entrance to the city gate.
Y Abi-melec le siguió, y él huyó delante de él, y cayeron heridos muchos hasta la entrada de la puerta.
41 Abimelech stayed in Arumah. Zebul forced Gaal and his relatives out of Shechem.
Y Abi-melec se quedó en Aruma, y Zebul echó a Gaal y a sus hermanos, que no morasen en Siquem.
42 On the next day the people of Shechem went out into the field, and this was reported to Abimelech.
Y aconteció el día siguiente que el pueblo salió al campo: y fue dado aviso a Abi-melec.
43 He took his people, divided them into three units, and they set an ambush in the fields. He looked and saw the people coming out from the city and he attacked and killed them.
El cual tomando gente repartióla en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo: y como miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad: y levantándose contra ellos hiriólos.
44 Abimelech and the units that were with him attacked and blocked the entrance to the city gate. The other two units attacked all who were in the field and killed them.
Y Abi-melec y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y pararon a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad: y las otras dos compañías acometieron a todos los que estaban en el campo, e hiriéronlos.
45 Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city, and killed the people who were in it. He tore down the city walls and spread salt over it.
Abi-melec combatió la ciudad todo aquel día y tomóla, y mató al pueblo que en ella estaba, y asoló la ciudad, y sembróla de sal.
46 When all the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-Berith.
Lo cual como oyeron todos los que estaban en la torre de Siquem, entráronse en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit.
47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders had gathered together at the tower of Shechem.
Y fue dicho a Abi-melec como todos los de la torre de Siquem estaban juntados.
48 Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the men who were with him. Abimelech took an ax and cut off branches. He put it on his shoulder and ordered the men with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.”
Abi-melec subió al monte de Salmón, él y toda la gente que estaba con él, y tomó Abi-melec hachas en su mano, y cortó rama de los árboles, y levantándola púsosela sobre sus hombros, diciendo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me veis a mí que hago, hacéd vosotros prestamente como yo.
49 So every one cut off branches and followed Abimelech. They piled them against the wall of the tower, and they set it on fire, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women.
Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron a Abi-melec, y pusiéronla junto a la fortaleza, y pusieron fuego con ella a la fortaleza, de tal manera que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, como mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he encamped against Thebez and captured it.
Después Abi-melec se fue a Tebes: y puso cerco a Tebes, y tomóla.
51 But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in. Then they went up to the roof of the tower.
En medio de aquella ciudad estaba una torre fuerte a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres y mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad: y cerrando tras sí las puertas subiéronse a la techumbre de la torre.
52 Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and he came up near to the door of the tower to burn it.
Y vino Abi-melec a la torre, y combatiéndola llegóse a la puerta de la torre para pegarle fuego.
53 But a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech's head and it cracked his skull.
Y una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abi-melec, y quebróle los cascos.
54 Then he called urgently to the young man who was his armor-bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, so no one will say about me, 'A woman killed him.'” So his young man pierced him through, and he died.
Y luego él llamó a su escudero, y díjole: Saca tu espada y mátame: porque no se diga de mí, una mujer le mató. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they went home.
Y como los Israelitas vieron muerto a Abi-melec, fuéronse cada uno a su casa.
56 So God avenged the evil of Abimelech that he did to his father by murdering his seventy brothers.
Así pues pagó Dios a Abi-melec el mal que hizo contra su padre, matando a sus setenta hermanos.
57 God made all the evil of the men of Shechem turn back on their own heads and on them came the curse of Jotham son of Jerub Baal.
Y aun todo el mal de los señores de Siquem tornó Dios sobre sus cabezas: y la maldición de Joatam hijo de Jerubaal vino sobre ellos.
