1 Corinthians 14
1 Strive to possess love; and desire earnestly the spiritual gifts, but especially that of prophesying.
Suivez l'amour et désirez ardemment les dons spirituels, mais surtout celui de prophétiser.
2 For he that speaketh in an [[unknown]] tongue speaketh not to men, but to God; for no one heareth; but in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries;
Car celui qui parle dans une autre langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu; car personne ne comprend, mais c'est par l'Esprit qu'il dit des mystères.
3 but he that prophesieth speaketh to men edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Mais celui qui prophétise parle aux hommes pour les édifier, les exhorter et les consoler.
4 He that speaketh in an [[unknown]] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Celui qui parle en langue étrangère s'édifie lui-même, mais celui qui prophétise édifie l'assemblée.
5 I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied; for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, unless he interpret, that the church may receive edification.
Or, je désire que vous parliez tous en d'autres langues, mais plus encore que vous prophétisiez. Car celui qui prophétise est plus grand que celui qui parle en d'autres langues, à moins qu'il n'interprète, afin que l'assemblée soit édifiée.
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching?
Mais maintenant, frères, si je viens à vous en parlant d'autres langues, que vous servirai-je, si je ne vous parle pas par révélation, ou par connaissance, ou par prophétie, ou par enseignement?
7 And even things without life that give sound, whether pipe or harp, if they make no distinction in the sounds, how shall that be known which is piped or harped?
Même les choses sans vie qui font du bruit, soit la flûte, soit la harpe, si elles ne donnaient pas une distinction dans les sons, comment saurait-on ce qui est flûté ou harpé?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for the battle?
Car si la trompette émettait un son incertain, qui se préparerait à la guerre?
9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall that be known which is spoken? For ye will be speaking into the air.
De même vous, si vous ne prononciez pas par la langue des paroles faciles à comprendre, comment saurait-on ce qui est dit? Car vous parleriez en l'air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and not one is without meaning.
Il y a peut-être tant de langues différentes dans le monde, et aucune n'est dépourvue de sens.
11 If then I know not the meaning of the language, I shall be to him that speaketh a foreigner, and he that speaketh a foreigner to me.
Si donc je ne connais pas le sens de la langue, je serais pour celui qui parle un étranger, et celui qui parle serait pour moi un étranger.
12 So also ye, since ye are eager to possess spiritual gifts, be earnest to abound in them to the edification of the church.
Ainsi vous aussi, puisque vous êtes zélés pour les dons spirituels, cherchez à abonder pour l'édification de l'assemblée.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an [[unknown]] tongue pray that he may interpret.
Que celui qui parle une autre langue prie donc pour qu'il puisse interpréter.
14 For if I pray in an [[unknown]] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
Car si je prie dans une autre langue, mon esprit prie, mais mon intelligence est infructueuse.
15 How stands it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Que dois-je faire? Je prierai par l'esprit, et je prierai aussi par l'intelligence. Je chanterai avec l'esprit, et je chanterai aussi avec l'intelligence.
16 Else, if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, since he understandeth not what thou art saying?
Sinon, si tu bénis par l'esprit, comment celui qui remplit la place des ignorants dira-t-il « Amen » à ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis?
17 For thou indeed givest thanks well; but the other is not edified.
Car toi, tu rends certainement bien grâce, mais l'autre n'est pas édifié.
18 I thank God, I speak in an [[unknown]] tongue more than ye all;
Je rends grâce à mon Dieu, je parle d'autres langues plus que vous tous.
19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might also instruct others, than ten thousand words in an [[unknown]] tongue.
Cependant, dans l'assemblée, j'aime mieux dire cinq mots avec mon intelligence, afin d'instruire aussi les autres, que dix mille mots dans une autre langue.
20 Brethren, do not become children in understanding; yet in malice be children, but in understanding be men.
Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants dans vos pensées, et ne faites pas preuve de malice, mais soyez mûrs dans vos pensées.
21 In the Law it is written: “With men of other tongues and with other lips will I speak to this people,
Il est écrit dans la loi: « C'est par des hommes de langue étrangère et par des lèvres d'étrangers que je parlerai à ce peuple. Ils ne m'écouteront même pas de cette manière, dit le Seigneur. »
22 and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.” Wherefore the tongues are for a sign, not to believers, but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.
C'est pourquoi les autres langues sont un signe, non pour ceux qui croient, mais pour les incrédules; mais la prophétie est un signe, non pour les incrédules, mais pour ceux qui croient.
23 If therefore the whole church be assembled in one place, and all be speaking with tongues, and there come in those who are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
Si donc toute l'assemblée est réunie et que tous parlent en d'autres langues, et que des personnes incultes ou non croyantes entrent, ne diront-elles pas que vous êtes fous?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that is an unbeliever, or unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is searched through by all,
Mais si tous prophétisent, et que quelqu'un d'incroyant ou d'inculte entre, il est repris par tous, et il est jugé par tous.
25 the secrets of his heart become manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and report that God is indeed within you.
Et ainsi les secrets de son cœur sont révélés. Alors il se prosternera sur sa face et adorera Dieu, déclarant que Dieu est vraiment au milieu de vous.
26 How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a lesson of instruction, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation; let all things be done for edification.
Qu'en est-il donc, frères? Quand vous vous réunissez, chacun de vous a un psaume, un enseignement, une révélation, une autre langue ou une interprétation. Que tout soit fait pour vous édifier mutuellement.
27 If any one speak in an [[unknown]] tongue, let it be by two, or, at the most, by three, and in turn; and let one interpret.
Si quelqu'un parle dans une autre langue, qu'il y en ait deux, ou au plus trois, et à tour de rôle, et qu'un seul interprète.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Mais s'il n'y a pas d'interprète, qu'il se taise dans l'assemblée, et qu'il parle à lui-même et à Dieu.
29 And of the prophets let two or three speak, and let the others judge;
Que deux ou trois des prophètes parlent, et que les autres discernent.
30 if anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first speaker be silent.
Mais si une révélation est faite à un autre assis à côté, que le premier se taise.
31 For one by one ye can all prophesy, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.
Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser un par un, afin que tous apprennent et que tous soient exhortés.
32 And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
Les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes,
33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
car Dieu n'est pas un Dieu de confusion, mais de paix, comme dans toutes les assemblées de saints.
34 let your women keep silence in the churches; for it is not permitted them to speak, but they are to be in subjection, as also saith the Law.
Que les femmes se taisent dans les assemblées, car il ne leur a pas été permis de parler, si ce n'est avec soumission, comme le dit aussi la loi,
35 And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in the church.
si elles veulent apprendre quelque chose. « Qu'elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison, car il est honteux pour une femme de parler dans l'assemblée. »
36 What! Did the word of God come forth from you? Or did it come to you alone?
Quoi!? Est-ce de vous que la parole de Dieu est sortie? Ou bien est-ce à toi seul qu'elle est parvenue?
37 If any one thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him know surely that the directions I am writing to you are the Lord's;
Si quelqu'un se croit prophète ou spirituel, qu'il reconnaisse les choses que je vous écris, qu'elles sont le commandement du Seigneur.
38 but if any one be ignorant, let him be ignorant!
Mais si quelqu'un est ignorant, qu'il le soit.
39 Wherefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues;
C'est pourquoi, frères, ayez le désir ardent de prophétiser, et n'interdisez pas de parler d'autres langues.
40 but let all things be done becomingly, and in order.
Que tout se passe de manière convenable et ordonnée.
