1 Corinthians 8
1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
Seuraavaksi kysytte, onko oikein syödä epäjumalille uhrattua lihaa. Tämä on niitä asioita, joissa mielipiteet menevät ristiin ja jokainen katsoo olevansa oikeassa. Saatamme tietysti tuntea itsemme tärkeiksi, kun meitä pidetään »kaikkitietävinä», mutta seurakunnan koossa pitämiseen tarvitaan ennen kaikkea rakkautta.
2 But if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he does not yet know as he ought to know.
Jos joku luulee tietävänsä vastaukset kaikkiin kysymyksiin, hän vain paljastaa oman tyhmyytensä.
3 But if anyone loves God, the same is known by him.
Jumalan viisaudelle on avoin vain se, joka todella rakastaa Jumalaa.
4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no God but one.
Niin, voimmeko me syödä epäjumalille uhrattua ruokaa? Tiedämme hyvin, ettei epäjumala ole mikään Jumala – on vain yksi ainoa Jumala.
5 For though there are things that are called "gods," whether in the heavens or on earth; as there are many "gods" and many "lords;"
Joidenkin ihmisten mielestä sekä taivaassa että maan päällä on paljonkin jumalia.
6 yet to us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we live through him.
Mutta me tiedämme, että on olemassa vain yksi Jumala, joka on luonut kaiken ja tehnyt meistä lapsiaan, ja yksi Herra, Jeesus Kristus, joka on kaiken alku ja antaa meille elämän.
7 However, not all have this knowledge. But some, being so accustomed to idols until now, eat as of a thing sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
Kaikki kristityt eivät tätä ymmärrä. He ovat koko ikänsä tottuneet ajattelemaan, että epäjumalia tosiaan on olemassa, ja uskovat, että niille uhrattu ruoka on todella uhrilihaa. Kun he syövät sitä, tämä vaivaa heitä ja loukkaa heidän herkkää omaatuntoaan.
8 But food will not commend us to God. For neither, if we do not eat, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.
Muistakaa nyt, että Jumalan kannalta on yhdentekevää, syömmekö sellaista lihaa vai emme. Siitä kieltäytyminen ei tee meitä pahemmiksi eikä syöminen paremmiksi.
9 But be careful that by no means does this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to the weak.
Käytä kuitenkin vapauttasi oikein. Älä loukkaa niitä kristittyjä joiden omatunto tässä asiassa on arempi kuin sinun.
10 For if someone sees you who have knowledge sitting in an idol's temple, won't his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?
Voi käydä näin: Syöt mainittua ruokaa kaikessa rauhassa temppelin ravintolassa, koska et näe siinä mitään pahaa. Silloin joku, josta on väärin syödä uhrilihaa, näkee sinut. Hänkin rohkaistuu syömään sitä, vaikka kaiken aikaa tuntee tekevänsä väärin.
11 And through your knowledge, he who is weak perishes, the brother for whom the Christ died.
Sanot, että »minä kyllä tiedän, mikä on oikein», mutta aiheutat suuren hengellisen vahingon herkkätuntoiselle uskonveljellesi, jonka puolesta Kristus myös on kuollut.
12 Thus, sinning against the brothers, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
Kun teet syntiä toista kristittyä vastaan rohkaisemalla häntä sellaiseen, minkä hän tuntee vääräksi, teet samalla syntiä Kristusta vastaan.
