Job 21
1 But Job answered and said,
Alors Job prit la parole et dit:
2 Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
Écoutez, écoutez mes paroles, que j’aie, du moins, cette consolation de vous.
3 Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
Permettez-moi de parler à mon tour, et, quand j’aurai parlé, vous pourrez vous moquer.
4 As for me, [is] my complaint to man? and if [it were so], why should not my spirit be troubled?
Est-ce contre un homme que se porte ma plainte? Comment donc la patience ne m’échapperait elle pas?
5 Mark me, and be astonished, and lay [your] hand upon [your] mouth.
Regardez-moi et soyez dans la stupeur, et mettez la main sur votre bouche.
6 Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.
Quand j’y pense, je frémis; et un frissonnement saisit ma chair.
7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
Pourquoi les méchants vivent-ils, et vieillissent-ils, accroissant leur force?
8 Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
Leur postérité s’affermit autour d’eux, leurs rejetons fleurissent à leurs yeux.
9 Their houses [are] safe from fear, neither [is] the rod of God upon them.
Leur maison est en paix, à l’abri de la crainte; la verge de Dieu ne les touche pas.
10 Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.
Leur taureau est toujours fécond, leur génisse enfante et n’avorte pas.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.
Ils laissent courir leurs enfants comme un troupeau, leurs nouveau-nés bondissent autour d’eux.
12 They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
Ils chantent au son du tambourin et de la cithare, ils se divertissent au son du chalumeau.
Ils passent leurs jours dans le bonheur, et ils descendent en un instant au schéol. (Sheol h7585)
14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
Pourtant ils disaient à Dieu: « Retire-toi de nous; nous ne désirons pas connaître tes voies.
15 What [is] the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
Qu’est-ce que le Tout-Puissant, pour que nous le servions? Que gagnerions-nous à le prier? »
16 Lo, their good [is] not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Leur prospérité n’est-elle pas dans leur main? — Toutefois, loin de moi le conseil de l’impie! —
17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and [how oft] cometh their destruction upon them! [God] distributeth sorrows in his anger.
Voit-on souvent s’éteindre la lampe des impies, la ruine fondre sur eux, et Dieu leur assigner un lot dans sa colère?
18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
Les voit-on comme la paille emportée par le vent, comme la glume enlevée par le tourbillon?
19 God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know [it].
« Dieu, dites-vous, réserve à ses enfants son châtiment!… » Mais que Dieu le punisse lui-même pour qu’il le sente,
20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
qu’il voie de ses yeux sa ruine, qu’il boive lui-même la colère du Tout-Puissant!
21 For what pleasure [hath] he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
Que lui importe, en effet, sa maison après lui, une fois que le nombre de ses mois est tranché?
22 Shall [any] teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.
Est-ce à Dieu qu’on apprendra la sagesse, à lui qui juge les êtres les plus élevés?
23 One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
L’un meurt au sein de sa prospérité, parfaitement heureux et tranquille,
24 His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
les flancs chargés de graisse, et la moelle des os remplie de sève.
25 And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
L’autre meurt, l’amertume dans l’âme, sans avoir goûté le bonheur.
26 They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
Tous deux se couchent également dans la poussière, et les vers les couvrent tous deux.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices [which] ye wrongfully imagine against me.
Ah! Je sais bien quelles sont vos pensées, quels jugements iniques vous portez sur moi.
28 For ye say, Where [is] the house of the prince? and where [are] the dwelling places of the wicked?
Vous dites: « Où est la maison de l’oppresseur! Qu’est devenue la tente qu’habitaient les impies? »
29 Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,
N’avez-vous donc jamais interrogé les voyageurs, et ignorez-vous leurs remarques?
30 That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
Au jour du malheur, le méchant est épargné; au jour de la colère, il échappe au châtiment.
31 Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him [what] he hath done?
Qui blâme devant lui sa conduite? Qui lui demande compte de ce qu’il a fait?
32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
On le porte honorablement au tombeau; et on veille sur son mausolée.
33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as [there are] innumerable before him.
les glèbes de la vallée lui sont légères, et tous les hommes y vont à sa suite, comme des générations sans nombre l’ y ont précédé.
34 How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
Que signifient donc vos vaines consolations? De vos réponses il ne reste que perfidie.
