< Deuteronomy 23 >
1 He that is crushed or maimed in his privy parts shall not enter into the assembly of the LORD.
No man with crushed or severed genitals may enter the assembly of the LORD.
2 A bastard shall not enter into the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation shall none of his enter into the assembly of the LORD.
No one of illegitimate birth may enter the assembly of the LORD, nor may any of his descendants, even to the tenth generation.
3 An Ammonite or a Moabite shall not enter into the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation shall none of them enter into the assembly of the LORD for ever;
No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even to the tenth generation.
4 because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Aram-naharaim, to curse thee.
For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim to curse you.
5 Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.
Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam, and the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you.
6 Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days for ever.
You are not to seek peace or prosperity from them as long as you live.
7 Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother; thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian, because thou wast a stranger in his land.
Do not despise an Edomite, for he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you lived as a foreigner in his land.
8 The children of the third generation that are born unto them may enter into the assembly of the LORD.
The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.
9 When thou goest forth in camp against thine enemies, then thou shalt keep thee from every evil thing.
When you are encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep yourself from every wicked thing.
10 If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of that which chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp.
If any man among you becomes unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he must leave the camp and stay outside.
11 But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall bathe himself in water; and when the sun is down, he may come within the camp.
When evening approaches, he must wash with water, and when the sun sets he may return to the camp.
12 Thou shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad.
You must have a place outside the camp to go and relieve yourself.
13 And thou shalt have a paddle among thy weapons; and it shall be, when thou sittest down abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee.
And you must have a digging tool in your equipment so that when you relieve yourself you can dig a hole and cover up your excrement.
14 For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy; that He see no unseemly thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, lest He see anything unclean among you and turn away from you.
15 Thou shalt not deliver unto his master a bondman that is escaped from his master unto thee;
Do not return a slave to his master if he has taken refuge with you.
16 he shall dwell with thee, in the midst of thee, in the place which he shall choose within one of thy gates, where it liketh him best; thou shalt not wrong him.
Let him live among you wherever he chooses, in the town of his pleasing. Do not oppress him.
17 There shall be no harlot of the daughters of Israel, neither shall there be a sodomite of the sons of Israel.
No daughter or son of Israel is to be a shrine prostitute.
18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a harlot, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow; for even both these are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
You must not bring the wages of a prostitute, whether female or male, into the house of the LORD your God to fulfill any vow, because both are detestable to the LORD your God.
19 Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest.
Do not charge your brother interest on money, food, or any other type of loan.
20 Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.
You may charge a foreigner interest, but not your brother, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything to which you put your hand in the land that you are entering to possess.
21 When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not be slack to pay it; for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it will be sin in thee.
If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to keep it, because He will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin.
22 But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.
But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty of sin.
23 That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt observe and do; according as thou hast vowed freely unto the LORD thy God, even that which thou hast promised with thy mouth.
Be careful to follow through on what comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed to the LORD your God with your own mouth.
24 When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes until thou have enough at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel.
When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, but you must not put any in your basket.
25 When thou comest into thy neighbour's standing corn, then thou mayest pluck ears with thy hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.
When you enter your neighbor’s grainfield, you may pluck the heads of grain with your hand, but you must not put a sickle to your neighbor’s grain.
