Job 38
1 Then answered the Lord vnto Iob out of the whirle winde, and said,
Et Yahvé répondit à Job du haut du tourbillon,
2 Who is this that darkeneth the counsell by wordes without knowledge?
« Qui est celui qui obscurcit le conseil par des mots sans connaissance?
3 Girde vp nowe thy loynes like a man: I will demande of thee and declare thou vnto me.
Accrochez-vous comme un homme, car je t'interrogerai, puis tu me répondras!
4 Where wast thou when I layd the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast vnderstanding,
« Où étiez-vous lorsque j'ai posé les fondations de la terre? Déclarez, si vous avez de la compréhension.
5 Who hath layde the measures thereof, if thou knowest, or who hath stretched the line ouer it:
Qui a déterminé ses mesures, si vous le savez? Ou qui a dépassé les bornes?
6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof set: or who layed the corner stone thereof:
Sur quoi ses fondations étaient-elles fixées? Ou qui a posé sa pierre angulaire,
7 When the starres of the morning praysed me together, and all the children of God reioyced:
quand les étoiles du matin chantaient ensemble, et tous les fils de Dieu ont crié de joie?
8 Or who hath shut vp the Sea with doores, when it yssued and came foorth as out of the wombe:
« Ou qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, quand il est sorti de l'utérus,
9 When I made the cloudes as a couering thereof, and darkenesse as the swadeling bands thereof:
quand j'ai fait des nuages son vêtement, et l'a enveloppé dans une épaisse obscurité,
10 When I stablished my commandement vpon it, and set barres and doores,
marqués pour cela ma limite, fixer les barres et les portes,
11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no farther, and here shall it stay thy proude waues.
et dit: « Vous pouvez venir ici, mais pas plus loin. Vos fières vagues seront arrêtées ici »?
12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy dayes? hast thou caused the morning to knowe his place,
« De ton temps, tu as donné des ordres au matin, et a permis à l'aube de connaître sa place,
13 That it might take hold of the corners of the earth, and that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
pour s'emparer des extrémités de la terre, et en faire sortir les méchants?
14 It is turned as clay to facion, and all stand vp as a garment.
Il est changé comme l'argile sous le sceau, et présenté comme un vêtement.
15 And from the wicked their light shall be taken away, and the hie arme shalbe broken.
La lumière est cachée aux méchants. Le bras supérieur est cassé.
16 Hast thou entred into the bottomes of the sea? or hast thou walked to seeke out the depth?
« Es-tu entré dans les sources de la mer? Ou avez-vous marché dans les recoins des profondeurs?
17 Haue the gates of death bene opened vnto thee? or hast thou seene the gates of the shadowe of death?
Les portes de la mort se sont-elles révélées à vous? Ou avez-vous vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort?
18 Hast thou perceiued the breadth of the earth? tell if thou knowest all this.
As-tu compris la terre dans sa largeur? Déclarez, si vous savez tout.
19 Where is the way where light dwelleth? and where is the place of darkenesse,
« Quel est le chemin vers la demeure de la lumière? Quant à l'obscurité, où est sa place,
20 That thou shouldest receiue it in the boundes thereof, and that thou shouldest knowe the paths to the house thereof?
que vous devez le prendre à sa limite, pour que tu discernes les chemins de sa maison?
21 Knewest thou it, because thou wast then borne, and because the nomber of thy dayes is great?
Tu le sais certainement, car tu es né à cette époque, et le nombre de vos jours est grand!
22 Hast thou entred into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seene the treasures of ye haile,
Vous êtes entrés dans les entrepôts de la neige, ou avez-vous vu les entrepôts de la grêle,
23 Which I haue hid against the time of trouble, against the day of warre and battell?
que j'ai réservé pour le temps de la détresse, contre le jour de la bataille et de la guerre?
24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the East winde vpon the earth?
De quelle manière la foudre est-elle distribuée, ou le vent d'est dispersé sur la terre?
25 Who hath deuided the spowtes for the raine? or the way for the lightning of ye thunders,
Qui a creusé un canal pour les eaux de crue, ou la trajectoire de l'orage,
26 To cause it to raine on the earth where no man is, and in the wildernes where there is no man?
pour faire pleuvoir sur un pays où il n'y a pas d'homme, dans le désert, où il n'y a pas d'homme,
27 To fulfil the wilde and waste place, and to cause the bud of the herbe to spring forth?
pour rassasier le terrain vague et désolé, pour faire pousser l'herbe tendre?
28 Who is the father of the rayne? or who hath begotten the droppes of the dewe?
La pluie a-t-elle un père? Ou qui est le père des gouttes de rosée?
29 Out of whose wombe came the yee? who hath ingendred the frost of the heauen?
De quel ventre la glace est-elle sortie? Qui a donné naissance à la gelée grise du ciel?
30 The waters are hid as with a stone: and the face of the depth is frosen.
Les eaux deviennent dures comme la pierre, lorsque la surface des profondeurs est gelée.
31 Canst thou restraine the sweete influences of the Pleiades? or loose the bandes of Orion?
« Pouvez-vous lier l'amas des Pléiades, ou détacher les cordes d'Orion?
32 Canst thou bring foorth Mazzaroth in their time? canst thou also guide Arcturus with his sonnes?
Peux-tu diriger les constellations dans leur saison? Ou pouvez-vous guider l'ourse avec ses oursons?
33 Knowest thou the course of heauen, or canst thou set the rule thereof in the earth?
Connais-tu les lois des cieux? Pouvez-vous établir sa domination sur la terre?
34 Canst thou lift vp thy voice to the cloudes that the aboundance of water may couer thee?
« Pouvez-vous élever votre voix vers les nuages, pour que l'abondance des eaux te couvre?
35 Canst thou sende the lightenings that they may walke, and say vnto thee, Loe, heere we are?
Peux-tu envoyer des éclairs, pour qu'ils partent? Est-ce qu'ils vous disent: « Nous y voilà »?
36 Who hath put wisedome in the reines? or who hath giuen the heart vnderstanding?
Qui a mis la sagesse dans les parties intérieures? Ou qui a donné de l'intelligence à l'esprit?
37 Who can nomber cloudes by wisedome? or who can cause to cease the bottels of heaue,
Qui peut compter les nuages par la sagesse? Ou qui peut verser les récipients du ciel,
38 When the earth groweth into hardnesse, and the clottes are fast together?
quand la poussière se transforme en masse, et les mottes de terre collent ensemble?
39 Wilt thou hunt the pray for the lyon? or fill the appetite of the lyons whelpes,
« Peux-tu chasser la proie pour la lionne, ou satisfaire l'appétit des jeunes lions,
40 When they couch in their places, and remaine in the couert to lye in waite?
quand ils sont accroupis dans leur tanière, et se mettre à l'affût dans les fourrés?
41 Who prepareth for the rauen his meate, when his birdes crie vnto God, wandering for lacke of meate?
Qui fournit au corbeau sa proie, quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, et errent par manque de nourriture?
