< John 8 >
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
Tedae Jesuh tah olive tlang la cet.
2 Early in the morning he returned to the Temple where many people gathered around him and he sat down and taught them.
Mincang ah bawkim la koep ha pawk hatah pilnam pum loh a taengla a paan uh. Te dongah ngol tih amih te a thuituen.
3 The religious teachers and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught committing adultery and made her stand before everyone.
Te vaengah cadaek rhoek neh Pharisee rhoek loh huta pakhat te a samphaihnah neh a tuuk uh tih a khuen uh.
4 They said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
Anih te a laklung ah a pai sak uh phoeiah, Jesuh te, “Saya, hekah huta he a samphaih li vaengah ka tuuk uh.
5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. What do you say?”
Tedae olkhueng dongah tah hebang he dae hamla Moses loh mamih n'uen coeng. Te koinih nang tah metlae na ti eh?” a ti na uh.
6 They said this to try and trap Jesus so they could condemn him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
Tedae he nen he amah paelnaeh ham a khueh uh dongah a noemcai uh tih a voek uh. Te dongah Jesuh loh buluk thuk tih kutdawn neh lai ah a daek.
7 They kept on demanding an answer, so he stood up and told them, “Whichever one of you has never sinned may throw the first stone at her.”
Tedae amah te koepkoep a dawt uh vaengah pai tih amih te, “Nangmih khuikah aka tholh mueh loh anih te lamhma la lungto neh dae saeh,” a ti nah.
8 Then he bent down again and went on writing on the ground.
Te phoeiah koep buluk tih lai ah a daek.
9 When they heard this they began to leave, one by one, starting with the oldest until Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman still standing there.
A yaak uh vaengah patong lamkah a tong tih pakhat pakhat ah boeih cet uh. Te dongah Jesuh neh a laklung kah aka om huta bueng la cul.
10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Where are they? Didn't anybody stay to condemn you?”
Te vaengah Jesuh te pai tih, “Huta, melam a om uh? nang m'boe sak moenih nama?” a ti nah.
11 “No one did, sir,” she replied. “I don't condemn you either,” Jesus told her. “Go, and don't sin anymore.”
Te dongah te long te, “Boeipa, om pawh ue,” a ti nah. Jesuh loh, “Kai khaw nang kan boe sak moenih. Cet lamtah tahae lamkah tholh voel boeh,” a ti nah.
12 Jesus spoke again to the people, telling them, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me you won't walk in darkness for you will have the life-giving light.”
Te phoeiah Jesuh te amih taengah koep cal tih, “Kai tah diklai kah vangnah ni. Kai aka vai rhoek tah a hmuep ah pongpa voel pawt vetih hingnah hmaivang te a khueh ni,” a ti nah.
13 The Pharisees replied, “You can't be your own witness! What you say doesn't prove anything!”
14 “Even if I am my own witness, my testimony is true,” Jesus told them, “for I know where I came from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I came from or where I'm going.
Jesuh loh amih te a doo tih, “Kai loh kamah kawng ka phong cakhaw kai kah olphong te oltak la om. Me lamkah ka lo tih mela ka caeh khaw ka ming. Tedae nangmih loh me lamkah ka lo tih mela ka caeh khaw na ming uh pawh.
15 You judge in a typically human way, but I don't judge anyone.
Nangmih loh pumsa neh lai na tloek uh. Kai tah ukhaw lai ka tloek moenih.
16 Even if I did judge, my judgment would be right because I am not doing this alone. The Father who sent me is with me.
Tedae lai ka tloek van coeng atah kamah bueng ka om pawt tih kai aka tueih a pa neh kai ka om rhoi dongah kai kah laitloeknah tah a thuem la om pataeng.
17 Your own law states that the testimony of two witnesses is valid.
Olkhueng dongah khaw nangmih ah hlang panit kah olphong te thuem tila a daek coeng.
18 I am my own witness, and my other witness is my Father who sent me.”
Kai loh kamah kawng aka phong la ka om dae kai aka tueih a pa loh kai kawng a phong,” a ti nah.
19 “Where is your father?” they asked him. “You don't know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me then you would know my Father as well.”
Te dongah amah te, “Na pa te melam a om?” a ti na uh. Jesuh loh, “Kai nan ming uh pawt tih a pa khaw na ming uh pawh. Kai nan ming uh koinih a pa te khaw na ming uh ni,” a ti nah.
20 Jesus explained this while he was teaching near the Temple treasury. Yet no one arrested him because his time had not yet come.
Bawkim ah a thuituen vaengah hekah ol he tangkabu kaepah a thui dae amah kah a tue a pha hlan dongah anih te tuu uh pawh.
21 Jesus told them again, “I'm leaving, and you'll search for me, but you'll die in your sin. You can't come where I'm going.”
Mela ka caeh khaw nan pha uh ham coeng pawh,” koep a ti nah.
22 The Jews wondered out loud, “Is he going to kill himself? Is that what he means when he says ‘You can't come where I'm going’?”
Te dongah Judah rhoek loh, “Amah ngawn uh la cai pawt nim? ‘Mela ka caeh khaw na loh ham coeng pawh,’ a ti he,” a ti uh.
23 Jesus told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
Te vaengah amih te, “Nangmih tah a hmui lamkah ni. Kai tah a so lamkah ni. Nangmih tah he diklai lamkah ni. Kai tah he diklai lamkah ka om moenih.
24 That is why I told you that you'll die in your sins. For if you don't trust in me, the ‘I am,’ you'll die in your sins.”
25 Then they asked him, “Who are you?” “Exactly who I told you I was from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
26 “There's much I could say about you, and much I could condemn. But the one who sent me tells the truth, and what I'm saying to you here in this world is what I heard from him.”
27 They didn't understand that he was talking to them about the Father. So Jesus explained to them:
Amih taengah Pa kah a thui tila ming uh pawh.
28 “When you have lifted up the Son of man then you'll know that I am the ‘I am,’ and that I do nothing of myself, but only say what the Father taught me.
Te dongah Jesuh loh amih taengah, “Hlang capa te na pomsang uh daengah ni kai ni ti khaw, kamah lamkah ka saii pawt tih a pa loh kai n'thuituen vanbangla ka thui he khaw na ming uh eh.
29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not abandoned me, for I always do what pleases him.”
30 Many who heard Jesus say these things put their trust in him.
Hekah a thui vanbangla amah te muep a tangnah uh.
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who trusted in him, “If you follow my teaching then you really are my disciples.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 “We're descendants of Abraham! We've never been slaves to anyone,” they answered. “How can you say that we'll be set free?”
Te dongah Jesuh amah te, “Kaimih tah Abraham kah tiingan la ka om uh tih sal ka bi uh noek moenih. Metlam lae nang loh aka loeih la na om uh ni na ti?” a ti na uh.
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
Jesuh loh amih te, “Nangmih taengah rhep rhep ka thui, tholh aka saii boeih tah tholh kah sal la om.
35 A slave doesn't have a permanent place in the family, but the son is part of the family forever. (aiōn )
Sal tah im ah kumhal duela a naeh moenih, capa tah kumhal duela naeh ta. (aiōn )
36 If the Son sets you free, then you're truly free.
37 I know you're Abraham's descendants, yet you're trying to kill me because you refuse to accept my words.
Tedae kai kah olka he nangmih ah a om pawt dongah kai ngawn hamla nan mae uh.
38 I'm telling you what the Father has revealed to me, while you do what your father told you.”
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you really were children of Abraham, you'd do what Abraham did,” Jesus told them.
Te dongah Jesuh te a doo uh tih, “Kaimih napa tah Abraham ni,” a ti uh.
40 “But you are trying to kill me now, because I told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham would never have done that.
Tedae kai Pathen taeng lamkah oltak ka yaak tih nangmih taengah aka thui hlang te ngawn ham na mae uh coeng. Abraham loh he tlam he a saii moenih.
41 You're doing what your father does.” “Well we are not illegitimate,” they responded. “God alone is our father!”
Nangmih loh na pa bisai te na saii uh,” a ti nah. Te dongah amah te, “Kaimih he cukhalhnah kah a sak moenih. A pa pakhat Pathen ka khueh uh,” a ti uh.
42 Jesus replied, “If God really was your father, you would love me. I came from God and now I am here. The decision to come wasn't mine, but the one who sent me.
Kai kamah lamloh ka pawk pawt tih anih long ni kai n'tueih.
43 Why can't you understand what I'm saying? It's because you refuse to hear my message!
44 Your father is the Devil, and you love to follow your father's evil desires. He was a murderer from the beginning. He never stood for the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies he reveals his true character, for he's a liar and the father of lies.
A khuiah oltak a om pawt dongah oltak ah pai pawh. Laithae neh laithae napa la om tih a cal vaengah a laithae te a phoe.
45 So because I tell you the truth, you don't believe me!
Tedae kai loh oltak ka thui dongah kai nan tangnah uh pawh.
46 Can any one of you prove that I'm guilty of sin? If I'm telling you the truth, why don't you believe me?
Nangmih ah unim kai kah tholh aka toeltham? Oltak ka thui atah balae tih kai nan tangnah uh pawh?
47 Anyone who belongs to God listens to what God says. The reason you don't listen is because you don't belong to God.”
48 “Aren't we right to call you a Samaritan who is demon-possessed?” said the Jews.
Judah rhoek loh amah te a dawt uh tih, “Nang he Samaria hlang ni, rhaithae na kaem tila ka thui uh te a thuem moenih a?” a ti na uh.
49 “No, I don't have a demon,” Jesus replied. “I honor my Father, but you dishonor me.
50 I'm not here looking to glorify myself. But there is one who does this for me and who judges in my favor.
51 I tell you the truth, anyone who follows my teaching will never die.” (aiōn )
Nangmih taengah rhep rhep ka thui. Khat khat loh kai ol a kuem atah kumhal duela dueknah hmu loengloeng mahpawh,” a ti nah. (aiōn )
52 “Now we know you're demon-possessed,” said the Jews. “Abraham died, and the prophets did too, and you're telling us ‘anyone who follows my teaching will never die’! (aiōn )
Te dongah Judah rhoek loh amah te, “Rhaithae na kaem te hnap ka ming uh. Abraham neh tonghma rhoek te duek coeng dae nang mai loh, ‘Khat khat loh kai ol te a kuem atah kumhal duela dueknah ten voel mahpawh,’ na ti. (aiōn )
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and the prophets died. Who do you think you are?”
A pa Abraham lakah tanglue la na om pawt nim? Anih khaw duek coeng, tonghma rhoek khaw duek uh coeng. Namah te u lam nim na ngai uh?” a ti na uh.
54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. But it is God himself who glorifies me, the one you claim, ‘He is our God.’
55 You don't know him, but I know him. If I were to say, ‘I don't know him,’ I'd be a liar, just like you. But I do know him, and I do what he says.
56 Your father Abraham was delighted as he looked forward to see my coming, and was so happy when he saw it.”
Na pa Abraham loh kai kah khohnin a hmuh ham te a kohoe tih a hmuh vaengah omngaih,” a ti nah.
57 The Jews replied, “You're not even fifty years old, and you've seen Abraham?”
Te dongah Judah rhoek loh amah te, “Kum sawmnga na lo hlan dae Abraham na hmuh pawn a?” a ti na uh.
58 “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am,” said Jesus.
Jesuh loh amih te, “Nangmih taengah rhep rhep ka thui, Abraham a om hlanah ka om coeng,” a ti nah.
59 At this they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus was hidden from them and he left the Temple.
Te vaengah amah te dae ham lungto a rhuh uh. Tedae Jesuh loh a thuh tak tih bawkim lamkah vik cet.
