Romans 3
1 What advantage then hath the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision?
Qu’est-ce donc que le Juif a de plus? ou de quoi sert la circoncision?
2 Much every way. First indeed, because the words of God were committed to them.
Beaucoup, de toute manière. Premièrement, parce que c’est aux Juifs que les oracles de Dieu ont été confiés;
3 For what if some of them have not believed? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid.
Car qu’importe si quelques-uns d’entre eux n’ont pas cru? Leur infidélité rendra-t-elle vaine la fidélité de Dieu? Non, sans doute.
4 But God is true; and every man a liar, as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy words, and mayest overcome when thou art judged.
Dieu est vrai, mais tout homme, menteur; selon qu’il est écrit: Afin que vous soyez reconnu fidèle dans vos paroles, et victorieux quand on vous juge.
5 But if our injustice commend the justice of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust, who executeth wrath?
Que si notre iniquité relève la justice de Dieu, que dirons-nous? Dieu n’est-il pas injuste d’envoyer sa colère?
6 (I speak according to man.) God forbid: otherwise how shall God judge this world?
(Je parle humainement.) Point du tout. Autrement comment Dieu jugera-t-il ce monde?
7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie, unto his glory, why am I also yet judged as a sinner?
Car si, par mon infidélité, la vérité de Dieu a éclaté davantage pour sa gloire, pourquoi suis-je encore jugé comme pécheur?
8 And not rather (as we are slandered, and as some affirm that we say) let us do evil, that there may come good? whose damnation is just.
Et pourquoi ne ferons-nous pas le mal pour qu’il en arrive du bien (conformément au blasphème qu’on nous impute, et à ce que quelques-uns nous font dire)? La condamnation de ceux-là est juste.
9 What then? Do we excel them? No, not so. For we have charged both Jews, and Greeks, that they are all under sin.
Quoi donc? Sommes-nous au-dessus d’eux? Nullement. Car nous avons convaincu les Juifs et les Grecs d’être tous sous le péché,
10 As it is written: There is not any man just.
Selon qu’il est écrit: Pas un seul n’est juste;
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Il n’y a personne qui comprenne, il n’y a personne qui cherche Dieu.
12 All have turned out of the way; they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good, there is not so much as one.
Tous ont décliné, tous sont devenus inutiles; il n’en est pas qui fasse le bien, il n’en est pas même un seul.
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have dealt deceitfully. The venom of asps is under their lips.
Leur gosier est un sépulcre ouvert, leur langue un instrument de fraude; un venin d’aspic est sous leurs lèvres;
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
Leur bouche est remplie de malédiction et d’amertume;
15 Their feet swift to shed blood:
Leurs pieds sont vites pour répandre le sang;
16 Destruction and misery in their ways:
La destruction et le malheur sont dans leurs voies,
17 And the way of peace they have not known:
Et la voie de la paix, ils ne l’ont pas connue;
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
La crainte de Dieu n’est pas devant leurs yeux.
19 Now we know, that what things soever the law speaketh, it speaketh to them that are in the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be made subject to God.
Or nous savons que tout ce que dit la loi, elle le dit à ceux qui sont sous la loi; de sorte que toute bouche soit fermée, et que tout le monde devienne soumis à Dieu;
20 Because by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified before him. For by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Parce que nulle chair ne sera justifiée devant lui par les œuvres de la loi. Car, par la loi, on n’a que la connaissance du péché.
21 But now without the law the justice of God is made manifest, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.
Tandis que maintenant, sans la loi, la justice de Dieu a été manifestée, étant confirmée par le témoignage de la loi et des prophètes;
22 Even the justice of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction:
Or la justice de Dieu par la foi en Jésus-Christ est pour tous ceux et sur tous ceux qui croient en lui; car il n’y a point de distinction;
23 For all have sinned, and do need the glory of God.
Parce que tous ont péché et ont besoin de la gloire de Dieu.
24 Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption, that is in Christ Jesus,
Etant justifiés gratuitement par sa grâce, par la rédemption qui est dans le Christ Jésus,
25 Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins,
Que Dieu a établi propitiation par la foi en son sang, pour montrer sa justice par la rémission des péchés précédents,
26 Through the forbearance of God, for the shewing of his justice in this time; that he himself may be just, and the justifier of him, who is of the faith of Jesus Christ.
Que Dieu a supportés, pour montrer sa justice en ce temps, afin qu’il soit juste lui-même, et qu’il justifie celui qui a la foi en Jésus-Christ.
27 Where is then thy boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.
Où est donc le sujet de ta gloire? Il est exclu. Par quelle loi? Des œuvres? Non, mais par la loi de la foi.
28 For we account a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law.
Car nous reconnaissons que l’homme est justifié par la foi, sans les œuvres de la loi.
29 Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also.
Dieu est-il le Dieu des Juifs seulement? Ne l’est-il pas aussi des gentils? Oui, certes, des gentils aussi;
30 For it is one God, that justifieth circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Puisqu’il n’y a qu’un seul Dieu qui justifie les circoncis par la foi, et les incirconcis par la foi.
31 Do we, then, destroy the law through faith? God forbid: but we establish the law.
Nous détruisons donc la loi par la foi? Loin de là; car nous établissons la loi.
