< Exodus 20 >

1 And God spoke all these words:
And God spoke all these words, saying,
2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
I am the Lord thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 You shall have no other gods before Me.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
Thou shalt not make unto thyself any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Thou shalt not bow thyself down to them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
And showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work.
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant or livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates.
But the seventh day is the sabbath in honor of the Lord thy God; on it thou shalt not do any work, neither thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Honor thy father and thy mother; in order that thy days may be prolonged upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
13 You shall not murder.
Thou shalt not kill.
14 You shall not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 You shall not steal.
Thou shalt not steal.
16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.
18 When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sounding of the ram’s horn, and the mountain enveloped in smoke, they trembled and stood at a distance.
And all the people perceived the thunders, and the lightnings, and the sound of the cornet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they removed trembling, and stood afar off.
19 “Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they said to Moses. “But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”
And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
20 “Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test you, so that the fear of Him may be before you, to keep you from sinning.”
And Moses said unto the people, Fear not; for in order to prove you, did God come, and in order that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
21 And the people stood at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
22 Then the LORD said to Moses, “This is what you are to tell the Israelites: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that from heaven I have spoken with you.
23 You are not to make any gods alongside Me; you are not to make for yourselves gods of silver or gold.
Ye shall not make any thing with me; gods of silver, and gods of gold ye shall not make unto yourselves.
24 You are to make for Me an altar of earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and cattle. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.
An altar of earth shalt thou make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thy oxen; in every place where I shall permit my name to be mentioned, I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
25 Now if you make an altar of stones for Me, you must not build it with stones shaped by tools; for if you use a chisel on it, you will defile it.
And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
26 And you must not go up to My altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.’
Neither shalt thou go up by steps upon my altar, that thy nakedness be not laid open thereon.
