< Proverbs 26 >
1 Bí òjò-dídì tàbí òjò ní ìgbà ìkórè ọlá kò yẹ aláìgbọ́n ènìyàn.
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour beseemeth not a fool.
2 Bí ológoṣẹ́ tí ń ṣí kiri tàbí alápáǹdẹ̀dẹ̀ tí ń rábàbà èpè kò le è mọ́ ẹni tí kò ṣiṣẹ́ èpè èpè kì í jani bí a kò bá ṣiṣẹ́ èpè.
As the sparrow for flitting about, as the swallow for flying, so a curse undeserved shall not come.
3 Ẹgba fún ẹṣin, ìjánu fún kẹ́tẹ́kẹ́tẹ́ àti pàṣán fún ẹ̀yìn aṣiwèrè.
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the back of fools.
4 Má ṣe dá aláìgbọ́n lóhùn gẹ́gẹ́ bí ìwà òmùgọ̀ rẹ̀ àìṣe bẹ́ẹ̀ ìwọ pẹ̀lú yóò dàbí i rẹ̀.
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
5 Dá aláìgbọ́n lóhùn gẹ́gẹ́ bí ìwà òmùgọ̀ rẹ̀ àìṣe bẹ́ẹ̀ yóò dàbí ọlọ́gbọ́n lójú ara rẹ̀.
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.
6 Bí ìgbà tí ènìyàn gé ẹsẹ̀ ara rẹ̀ tàbí mú ìwà ipá ni kí a ránṣẹ́ nípasẹ̀ aṣiwèrè.
He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off [his own] feet, [and] drinketh damage.
7 Bí ẹsẹ̀ arọ tí ó ń mi dirodiro ni òwe lẹ́nu aṣiwèrè.
The legs of the lame hang loose; so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Bí ìgbà tí a so òkúta mọ́ okùn títa ni fífún aláìgbọ́n ní ọlá.
As a bag of gems in a stoneheap, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.
9 Bí ẹ̀gún èṣùṣú lọ́wọ́ ọ̀mùtí ni òwe lẹ́nu aláìgbọ́n.
[As] a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Bí tafàtafà ti ń ṣe ni léṣe lẹ́ẹ̀kọ̀ọ̀kan ni ẹni tí ó gba aṣiwèrè ṣíṣẹ́ tàbí ẹni tí ń kọjá lọ.
A master roughly worketh every one: he both hireth the fool and hireth passers-by.
11 Bí ajá ti í padà sí èébì rẹ̀ bẹ́ẹ̀ ni aṣiwèrè tún ń hu ìwà òmùgọ̀ rẹ̀.
As a dog turneth back to its vomit, [so] a fool repeateth his folly.
12 Ǹjẹ́ o rí ènìyàn tí ó jẹ́ ọlọ́gbọ́n ní ojú ara rẹ̀? Ìrètí ń bẹ fún aláìgbọ́n ènìyàn jù ú lọ.
Hast thou seen a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope of a fool than of him.
13 Ọ̀lẹ wí pé, “Kìnnìún wà lójú ọ̀nà kìnnìún búburú ń ké ní ojú ọ̀nà.”
The sluggard saith, There is a fierce lion in the way; a lion is in the midst of the streets!
14 Bí ìlẹ̀kùn ti ń yí lórí ìsolẹ̀kùn rẹ̀, bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ọ̀lẹ ń yí lórí ibùsùn rẹ̀.
[As] the door turneth upon its hinges, so the sluggard upon his bed.
15 Ọ̀lẹ ki ọwọ́ rẹ̀ bọ inú àwo oúnjẹ, ó lẹ dé bi pé kò le è mú u padà wá sí ẹnu rẹ̀.
The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish: it wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth.
16 Ọ̀lẹ gbọ́n ní ojú ara rẹ̀, ju ènìyàn méje tí wọ́n le è fún un ní ìdáhùn ọlọ́gbọ́n.
A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven [men] that answer discreetly.
17 Bí ènìyàn tí ó di ajá ní etí mú ni ẹni tí ń kọjá lọ tí ó dá sí ọ̀rọ̀ ìjà tí kì í ṣe tirẹ̀.
He that passing by vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, is [like] one that taketh a dog by the ears.
18 Bí i asínwín ti ń ju ọfà àti ọfà tí ń ṣe kú pa ni
As a madman who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,
19 ni ènìyàn tí ń tan aládùúgbò rẹ̀ jẹ tí ó sì wí pé, “Àwàdà lásán ni mo ń ṣe.”
so is a man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am I not in sport?
20 Láìsí igi, iná yóò kú láìsí ọ̀rọ̀ ẹ̀yìn, ìjà máa ń parí.
Where no wood is, the fire goeth out; and where there is no talebearer, the contention ceaseth.
21 Bí èédú ti rí sí ẹyin iná, igi fún iná, bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ènìyàn oníjà fún ìjà dídá sílẹ̀.
[As] coals for hot coals, and wood for fire, so is a contentious man to inflame strife.
22 Ọ̀rọ̀ ẹni tí ń sọ̀rọ̀ ẹ̀yìn dàbí àṣàyàn òkèlè wọ́n a sì wọ ìsàlẹ̀ inú lọ.
The words of a talebearer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
23 Ètè jíjóni, àti àyà búburú, dà bí ìdàrọ́ fàdákà tí a fi bo ìkòkò.
Ardent lips, and a wicked heart, are [as] an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.
24 Ènìyàn tí ó kórìíra máa ń fi ètè rẹ̀ bo àṣírí ara rẹ̀ ṣùgbọ́n nínú ọkàn rẹ̀ ni ìtànjẹ wà.
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, but he layeth up deceit within him:
25 Bí ọ̀rọ̀ rẹ̀ tilẹ̀ fanimọ́ra, má ṣe gbà á gbọ́ nítorí ìríra méje ni ó kún inú ọkàn rẹ̀.
when his voice is gracious, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Ìkórìíra rẹ le è fi ara sin nípa ẹ̀tàn ṣùgbọ́n àṣírí ìwà búburú rẹ̀ yóò tú ní gbangba.
Though [his] hatred is covered by dissimulation, his wickedness shall be made manifest in the congregation.
27 Bí ènìyàn kan bá gbẹ́ kòtò, yóò ṣubú sínú rẹ̀. Bí ẹnìkan bá ju òkúta, yóò padà sọ́dọ̀ òun tìkára rẹ̀.
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein; and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.
28 Ahọ́n ẹ̀tàn máa ń kórìíra àwọn tí ó ṣe ní ìkà, ẹnu ìtànjẹ sì máa ń pa ni run.
A lying tongue hateth those that are injured by it, and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
