< Proverbs 23 >
1 Nígbà tí ìwọ bá jókòó láti bá ìjòyè jẹun, kíyèsi ohun tí ó wà níwájú rẹ gidigidi.
When you sit to eat with a ruler, Diligently consider that which [is] before you,
2 Ìwọ a sì fi ọ̀bẹ lé ara rẹ ní ọ̀fun, bí ìwọ bá jẹ́ òkúndùn ènìyàn.
And you have put a knife to your throat, If you [are] a man of appetite.
3 Má ṣe fẹ́ oúnjẹ dídùn rẹ̀: nítorí pé oúnjẹ ẹ̀tàn ni.
Have no desire to his delicacies, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 Má ṣe ṣe làálàá láti lọ́rọ̀: ṣíwọ́ kúrò nínú ọgbọ́n ara rẹ.
Do not labor to make wealth, Cease from your own understanding, Do you cause your eyes to fly on it? Then it is not.
5 Ìwọ ó ha fi ojú rẹ lépa ohun tí kò sí? Nítorí tí ọ̀rọ̀ hu ìyẹ́ apá fún ara rẹ̀, ó sì ń fò bí idì ní ojú ọ̀run.
For wealth makes wings to itself, It flies to the heavens as an eagle.
6 Má ṣe jẹ oúnjẹ ẹni tí ó háwọ́, bẹ́ẹ̀ ni kí o má sì ṣe fẹ́ oúnjẹ dídùn rẹ̀.
Do not eat the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his delicacies,
7 Nítorí pé bí ẹni tí ń ṣírò ní ọkàn rẹ̀, bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ó rí: “Máa jẹ, kí o sì máa mu,” ni ó ń wí fún ọ; ṣùgbọ́n ọkàn rẹ̀ kò pẹ̀lú rẹ.
For as he has thought in his soul, so he [is]. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, And his heart [is] not with you.
8 Òkèlè tí ìwọ jẹ ni ìwọ ó pọ̀ jáde, ìwọ a sì sọ ọ̀rọ̀ dídùn rẹ̀ nù.
You vomit up your morsel you have eaten, And have marred your words that [are] sweet.
9 Má ṣe sọ̀rọ̀ ní etí aṣiwèrè; nítorí tí yóò gan ọgbọ́n ọ̀rọ̀ rẹ.
Do not speak in the ears of a fool, For he treads on the wisdom of your words.
10 Má ṣe ṣí ààlà àtijọ́ kúrò; má sì ṣe bọ́ sínú oko aláìní baba.
Do not remove a border of ancient times, And do not enter into fields of the fatherless,
11 Nítorí pé Olùràpadà wọn lágbára; yóò gba ìjà wọn jà sí ọ.
For their Redeemer [is] strong, He pleads their cause with you.
12 Fi àyà sí ẹ̀kọ́, àti etí rẹ sí ọ̀rọ̀-ìmọ̀.
Bring your heart to instruction, And your ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 Má ṣe fa ọwọ́ ìbáwí sẹ́yìn kúrò lára ọmọdé, nítorí pé bí ìwọ bá fi pàṣán nà án, òun kì yóò kú.
Do not withhold discipline from a youth, When you strike him with a rod he does not die.
14 Bí ìwọ fi pàṣán nà án, ìwọ ó sì gbà ọkàn rẹ̀ là kúrò ní ọ̀run àpáàdì. (Sheol )
You strike him with a rod, And you deliver his soul from Sheol. (Sheol )
15 Ọmọ mi, bí ọkàn rẹ bá gbọ́n, ọkàn mi yóò yọ̀, àní èmi pẹ̀lú.
My son, if your heart has been wise, My heart rejoices, even mine,
16 Inú mi yóò sì dùn nígbà tí ètè rẹ̀ bá ń sọ̀rọ̀ títọ́.
And my reins exult when your lips speak uprightly.
17 Má ṣe jẹ́ kí àyà rẹ ó ṣe ìlara sí àwọn ẹlẹ́ṣẹ̀, ṣùgbọ́n kí ìwọ ó wà ní ìbẹ̀rù Olúwa, ní ọjọ́ gbogbo.
Do not let your heart be envious at sinners, But—in the fear of YHWH all the day.
18 Nítorí pé ìgbẹ̀yìn ń bẹ nítòótọ́; ìrètí rẹ̀ kì yóò sì gé kúrò.
For is there a posterity? Then your hope is not cut off.
19 Gbọ́, ìwọ ọmọ mi, kí o sì gbọ́n, kí o sì máa tọ́ àyà rẹ sí ọ̀nà títọ́.
Hear, my son, and be wise, And make your heart blessed in the way,
20 Má ṣe wà nínú àwọn ọ̀mùtí; àti àwọn wọ̀bìà alájẹkì ọ̀jẹun;
Do not become drunk with wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 nítorí pé ọ̀mùtí àti ọ̀jẹun ni yóò di tálákà; ìmúni-tòògbé ní sì ń fi àkísà wọ ọkùnrin láṣọ.
For the drunkard and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clothes with rags.
22 Fetí sí ti baba rẹ tí ó bí ọ, má sì ṣe gan ìyá rẹ, nígbà tí o bá gbó.
Listen to your father, who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she has become old.
23 Ra òtítọ́, kí o má sì ṣe tà á; ra ọgbọ́n pẹ̀lú àti ẹ̀kọ́ àti òye.
Buy truth, and do not sell, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 Baba olódodo ni yóò yọ̀ gidigidi: ẹni tí ó sì bí ọmọ ọlọ́gbọ́n, yóò ní ayọ̀ nínú rẹ̀.
The father of the righteous rejoices greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoices in him.
25 Jẹ́ kí baba rẹ àti ìyá rẹ ó yọ̀, sì jẹ́ kí inú ẹni tí ó bí ọ dùn.
Your father and your mother rejoice, Indeed, she bearing you is joyful.
26 Ọmọ mi, fi àyà rẹ fún mi, kí o sì jẹ́ kí ojú rẹ ní inú dídùn sí ọ̀nà mi.
Give, my son, your heart to me, And let your eyes watch my ways.
27 Nítorí pé panṣágà obìnrin ọ̀gbun jíjìn ni; àti àjèjì obìnrin kànga híhá ni.
For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
28 Òun á sì ba ní bùba bí olè, a sì sọ àwọn olùrékọjá di púpọ̀ nínú àwọn ènìyàn.
She also, as catching prey, lies in wait, And she increases the treacherous among men.
29 Ta ni ó ni òsì? Ta ni ó ni ìbànújẹ́? Ta ni ó ni ìjà? Ta ni ó ni asọ̀? Ta ni ó ni ọgbẹ́ láìnídìí?
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaint? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?
30 Àwọn tí ó dúró pẹ́ níbi ọtí wáìnì; àwọn tí ń lọ láti dán ọtí wáìnì àdàlú wò.
Those lingering by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 Ìwọ má ṣe wò ọtí wáìnì nígbà tí ó pọ́n, nígbà tí ó bá ń fi àwọ̀ rẹ̀ hàn nínú ago, tí a gbé e mì, tí ó ń dùn.
Do not see wine when it shows itself red, When it gives its color in the cup, It goes up and down through the upright.
32 Níkẹyìn òun á bu ni ṣán bí ejò, a sì bunijẹ bí i paramọ́lẹ̀.
Its latter end—it bites as a serpent, And it stings as a viper.
33 Ojú rẹ yóò wò àwọn àjèjì obìnrin, àyà rẹ yóò sì sọ̀rọ̀ àyídáyidà.
Your eyes see strange women, And your heart speaks perverse things.
34 Nítòótọ́, ìwọ ó dàbí ẹni tí ó dùbúlẹ̀ ní àárín Òkun, tàbí ẹni tí ó dùbúlẹ̀ lókè-ọkọ̀.
And you have been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 Ìwọ ó sì wí pé, “Wọ́n lù mí; kò dùn mí; wọ́n lù mí, èmi kò sì mọ̀: nígbà wo ni èmi ó jí? Èmi ó tún máa wá òmíràn láti mu.”
“They struck me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake—I seek it yet again!”
