< Proverbs 22 >

1 Yíyan orúkọ rere sàn ju púpọ̀ ọrọ̀ lọ, àti ojúrere dára ju fàdákà àti wúrà lọ.
A fair name is better than much wealth, and good favor is above silver and gold.
2 Ọlọ́rọ̀ àti tálákà péjọpọ̀: Olúwa ni ẹlẹ́dàá gbogbo wọn.
The rich and the poor meet together; but the Lord made them both.
3 Ọlọ́gbọ́n ènìyàn ti rí ibi tẹ́lẹ̀, ó ṣé ara rẹ̀ mọ́: ṣùgbọ́n àwọn òpè tẹ̀síwájú, a sì jẹ wọ́n ní yà.
An intelligent man seeing a bad man severely punished is himself instructed, but fools pass by and are punished.
4 Èrè ìrẹ̀lẹ̀ àti ìbẹ̀rù Olúwa ni ọrọ̀ ọlá, àti ìyè.
The fear of the Lord is the offspring of wisdom, and wealth, and glory, and life.
5 Ègún àti ìdẹ̀kùn ń bẹ ní ọ̀nà aláyídáyidà: ẹni tí ó bá pa ọkàn rẹ̀ mọ́ yóò jìnnà sí wọn.
Thistles and snares are in perverse ways; but he that keeps his soul will refrain from them.
6 Tọ́ ọmọdé ní ọ̀nà tí yóò tọ̀: nígbà tí ó bá dàgbà, kì yóò kúrò nínú rẹ̀.
7 Ọlọ́rọ̀ ṣe olórí olùpọ́njú, ajigbèsè sì ṣe ìránṣẹ́ fún ẹni tí a jẹ ní gbèsè.
The rich will rule over the poor, and servants will lend to their own masters.
8 Ẹni tí ó bá fúnrúgbìn ẹ̀ṣẹ̀, yóò ká asán: ọ̀pá ìbínú rẹ̀ yóò kùnà.
He that sows wickedness shall reap troubles; and shall fully receive the punishment of his deeds. God loves a cheerful and liberal man; but [a man] shall fully prove the folly of his works.
9 Ẹni tí ó ní ojú àánú ni a ó bùkún fún; nítorí tí ó fi nínú oúnjẹ rẹ̀ fún olùpọ́njú.
He that has pity on the poor shall himself be maintained; for he has given of his own bread to the poor. He that gives liberally secures victory an honor; but he takes away the life of them that posses [them].
10 Lé ẹlẹ́gàn sí ìta, ìjà yóò sì jáde; nítòótọ́ ìjà àti ẹ̀gàn yóò dẹ́kun.
Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonors all.
11 Ẹni tí ó fẹ́ ìwà funfun ti àyà, tí ó sì ń sọ̀rọ̀ iyì jáde, ọba yóò ṣe ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ̀.
The Lord loves holy hearts, and all blameless persons are acceptable with him: a king rules with his lips.
12 Ojú Olúwa pa ìmọ̀ mọ́, ó sì yí ọ̀rọ̀ olùrékọjá pò.
But the eyes of the Lord preserve discretion; but the transgressor despises [wise] words.
13 Ọ̀lẹ wí pé, “Kìnnìún ń bẹ lóde! Yóò pa mí ní ìgboro!”
The sluggard makes excuses, and says, [There is] a lion in the ways, and murderers in the streets.
14 Ẹnu àwọn àjèjì obìnrin, ihò jíjìn ni; ẹni tí a ń bínú sí láti ọ̀dọ̀ Olúwa wá ni yóò ṣubú sínú rẹ̀.
The mouth of a transgressor is a deep pit; and he that is hated of the Lord shall fall into it. Evil ways are before a man, and he does not like to turn away from them; but it is needful to turn aside from a perverse and bad way.
15 Àyà ọmọdé ni ìwà wèrè dì sí; ṣùgbọ́n pàṣán ìtọ́ni ni yóò lé e jìnnà kúrò lọ́dọ̀ rẹ̀.
Folly is attached to the heart of a child, but the rod and instruction are [then] far from him.
16 Ẹni tó ń ni tálákà lára láti ní ọrọ̀, tí ó sì ń ta ọlọ́rọ̀ lọ́rẹ, yóò di aláìní bí ó ti wù kó rí. Gbọ́ ọ̀rọ̀ ọlọ́gbọ́n ènìyàn.
He that oppresses the poor, increases his own substance, yet gives to the rich so as to make it less.
17 Dẹtí rẹ sílẹ̀, kí o gbọ́ ọ̀rọ̀ àwọn ọlọ́gbọ́n, kí o sì fi àyà rẹ sí ẹ̀kọ́ mi.
Incline your ear to the words of wise men: hear also my word, and apply your heart,
18 Nítorí ohun dídùn ni bí ìwọ bá pa wọ́n mọ́ ní inú rẹ; nígbà tí a sì pèsè wọn tán ní ètè rẹ.
that you may know that they are good: and if you lay them to heart, they shall also gladden you on your lips.
19 Kí ìgbẹ́kẹ̀lé rẹ lè wà ní ti Olúwa, èmi fihàn ọ́ lónìí, àní fún ọ.
That your hope may be in the Lord, and he may make your way known to you.
20 Èmi kò ha ti kọ̀wé ohun dáradára sí ọ ní ti ìmọ̀ràn àti ní ti ẹ̀kọ́,
And do you too repeatedly record them for yourself on the table of your heart, for counsel and knowledge.
21 kí ó lè mú ọ mọ ìdájú ọ̀rọ̀ òtítọ́; kí ìwọ le máa fi ìdáhùn òtítọ́ fún àwọn tí ó rán ọ?
I therefore teach you truth, and knowledge good to hear; that you may answer words of truth to them that question you.
22 Má ṣe ja tálákà ní olè, nítorí tí ó jẹ́ tálákà: bẹ́ẹ̀ ni kí o má sì ṣe ni olùpọ́njú lára ní ibodè,
Do no violence to the poor, for he is needy: neither dishonor the helpless [man] in the gates.
23 nítorí Olúwa yóò gbèjà wọn, yóò sì gba ọkàn àwọn tí ń gba tiwọn náà.
For the Lord will plead his cause, and you shall deliver your soul in safety.
24 Má ṣe bá oníbìínú ènìyàn ṣe ọ̀rẹ́; má sì ṣe bá ọkùnrin onínú-fùfù rìn.
Be not companion to a furious man; neither lodge with a passionate man:
25 Kí ìwọ má ba à kọ́ ìwà rẹ̀, ìwọ a sì gba ìkẹ́kùn fún ara rẹ.
lest you learn of his ways, and get snares to your soul.
26 Má ṣe wà nínú àwọn tí ń ṣe ìgbọ̀nwọ́, tàbí nínú àwọn tí ó dúró fún gbèsè.
Become not surety from respect of a man's person.
27 Bí ìwọ kò bá ní nǹkan tí ìwọ ó fi san, nítorí kín ni yóò ṣe gba ẹni rẹ kúrò lábẹ́ rẹ?
For if those have not whence to give compensation, they will take the bed [that is] under you.
28 Má ṣe yẹ ààlà ilẹ̀ ìgbàanì, tí àwọn baba rẹ ti pa.
Remove not the old landmarks, which your fathers placed.
29 Ìwọ ha rí ènìyàn tí ó ń fi àìṣe ìmẹ́lẹ́ ṣe iṣẹ́ rẹ̀? Òun yóò dúró níwájú àwọn ọba; òun kì yóò dúró níwájú àwọn ènìyàn lásán.
It is fit that an observant man and [one] diligent in his business should attend on kings, and not attend on slothful men.
