< Proverbs 17 >

1 Òkèlè gbígbẹ tòun tàlàáfíà àti ìdákẹ́ jẹ́ẹ́ sàn ju ilé tí ó kún fọ́fọ́ fún ẹran àti ìjà.
Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than a house full of feasting with strife.
2 Ọlọ́gbọ́n ìránṣẹ́ yóò ṣàkóso adójútini ọmọ, yóò sì pín ogún gẹ́gẹ́ bí ọ̀kan nínú àwọn ọmọ.
A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that dealeth shamefully, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 Iná ni a fi fọ́ fàdákà àti wúrà, ṣùgbọ́n Olúwa ló ń dán ọkàn wò.
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4 Ènìyàn búburú ń tẹ́tí sí ètè tí ń sọ ibi; òpùrọ́ a máa fetí sí ahọ́n búburú.
A evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
5 Ẹnikẹ́ni tí ó bá sín olùpọ́njú jẹ, ó gan Ẹlẹ́dàá rẹ̀, ẹnikẹ́ni tí ń yọ̀ sí ìyọnu kò ní lọ láìjìyà.
Whoso mocketh the poor blasphemeth his Maker; and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
6 Ọmọ ọmọ ni adé orí arúgbó, ògo àwọn ọmọ sì ni òbí jẹ.
Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
7 Ọ̀rọ̀ dídùn kò yẹ aṣiwèrè, bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ètè èké kò yẹ ọmọ-aládé!
Overbearing speech becometh not a churl; much less do lying lips a prince.
8 Òkúta iyebíye jẹ́ ẹ̀bùn ní ojú ẹni tí ó ni í, ibikíbi tí ó yí sí, á ṣe rere.
A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever he turneth, he prospereth.
9 Ẹni tí ó fojú fo ẹ̀ṣẹ̀ tí wọ́n ṣẹ̀ ẹ́ mú kí ìfẹ́ gbòòrò sí i. Ṣùgbọ́n ẹnikẹ́ni tí ń tẹnumọ́ ọ̀rọ̀ yóò pín ọ̀rẹ́ tímọ́tímọ́ méjì ní yà.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that harpeth on a matter estrangeth a familiar friend.
10 Ọ̀rọ̀ ìbáwí dun olóye ènìyàn ju ọgọ́rùn-ún pàṣán lọ lẹ́yìn òmùgọ̀.
A rebuke entereth deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool.
11 Orí kunkun ni ènìyàn ìkà máa ń ṣe, ìjòyè aláìláàánú ni a ó rán sí i.
A rebellious man seeketh only evil; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Ó sàn kí ènìyàn pàdé beari tí a ti kó lọ́mọ jù aláìgbọ́n nínú ìwà òmùgọ̀ rẹ̀.
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 Bí ènìyàn kan bá fi ibi san ìre, ibi kì yóò kúrò nílé rẹ̀ láéláé.
Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 Bíbẹ̀rẹ̀ ìjà dàbí ẹni tí ó dá ojú fún adágún omi; nítorí náà mẹ́nu kúrò nínú ọ̀rọ̀ kí ó tó di ìjà.
The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before the quarrel break out.
15 Gbígbé ẹ̀bi fún aláre àti dídá ẹni jàre lẹ́bi, Olúwa kórìíra méjèèjì.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are an abomination to the LORD.
16 Kí ni ìwúlò owó lọ́wọ́ aṣiwèrè, níwọ̀n bí kò ti ní èròǹgbà láti rí ọgbọ́n?
Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?
17 Ọ̀rẹ́ a máa fẹ́ni nígbà gbogbo, arákùnrin sì wà fún ìgbà ìpọ́njú.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 Ènìyàn aláìgbọ́n ṣe ìbúra, ó sì ṣe onídùúró fún aládùúgbò rẹ̀.
A man void of understanding is he that striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.
19 Ẹni tí ó fẹ́ràn ìjà fẹ́ràn ẹ̀ṣẹ̀; ẹni tí ó kọ́ ibodè gígàn ń wá ìparun.
He loveth transgression that loveth strife; he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 Ènìyàn aláyídáyidà ọkàn kì í gbèrú, ẹni tí ó ní ahọ́n ẹ̀tàn bọ́ sínú ìyọnu.
He that hath a froward heart findeth no good; and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into evil.
21 Láti bí aláìgbọ́n lọ́mọ a máa fa ìbànújẹ́ ọkàn, kò sí ayọ̀ fún baba ọmọ tí kò gbọ́n.
He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; and the father of a churl hath no joy.
22 Ọkàn tí ó túká jẹ́ oògùn gidi, ṣùgbọ́n ọkàn tí ó bàjẹ́ a máa mú kí egungun gbẹ.
A merry heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 Ènìyàn búburú a gba àbẹ̀tẹ́lẹ̀ ní ìkọ̀kọ̀ láti yí ìdájọ́ po.
A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the ways of justice.
24 Olóye ènìyàn gbójú wo ọgbọ́n níwájú, ṣùgbọ́n ojú aláìgbọ́n ń wò káàkiri ilẹ̀ ayé.
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 Aṣiwèrè ọmọ mú ìbànújẹ́ bá baba rẹ̀ àti ìkorò fún ẹni tí ó bí i lọ́mọ.
A foolish son is vexation to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
26 Kò dára láti fìyà jẹ ènìyàn tí kò ṣẹ̀, tàbí láti na ìjòyè lórí òtítọ́ inú wọn.
To punish also the righteous is not good, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.
27 Ènìyàn tó ní ìmọ̀ máa ń ṣọ́ra fún àwọn ọ̀rọ̀ tí ó ń sọ, ènìyàn olóye sì máa ń ní sùúrù.
He that spareth his words hath knowledge; and he that husbandeth his spirit is a man of discernment.
28 Kódà aláìgbọ́n máa ń dàbí ọlọ́gbọ́n bí ó bá dákẹ́, àti bí olóye bí ó bá fètèmétè.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed as a man of understanding.
