< Matthew 2 >
1 Lẹ́yìn ìgbà tí a bí Jesu ní Bẹtilẹhẹmu ti Judea, ni àkókò ọba Herodu, àwọn amòye ti ìlà-oòrùn wá sí Jerusalẹmu.
After the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem in Judea, in the reign of King Herod, some Astrologers from the East arrived in Jerusalem, asking:
2 Wọ́n si béèrè pé, “Níbo ni ẹni náà tí a bí tí í ṣe ọba àwọn Júù wà? Àwa ti rí ìràwọ̀ rẹ̀ ní ìlà-oòrùn, a sì wá láti foríbalẹ̀ fún un.”
“Where is the new-born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and have come to do homage to him.”
3 Nígbà tí ọba Herodu sì gbọ́ èyí, ìdààmú bá a àti gbogbo àwọn ara Jerusalẹmu pẹ̀lú rẹ̀.
When King Herod heard of this, he was much troubled, and so, too, was all Jerusalem.
4 Nígbà tí ó sì pe àwọn olórí àlùfáà àti àwọn olùkọ́ òfin jọ, ó bi wọ́n léèrè níbi ti a ó gbé bí Kristi?
He called together all the Chief Priests and Teachers of the Law in the nation, and questioned them as to where the Christ was to be born.
5 Wọ́n sì wí pé, “Ní Bẹtilẹhẹmu ti Judea, èyí ni ohun tí wòlíì ti kọ ìwé rẹ̀ pé,
“At Bethlehem in Judea,” was their answer; “for it is said in the Prophet —
6 “‘Ṣùgbọ́n ìwọ Bẹtilẹhẹmu, ní ilẹ̀ Judea, ìwọ kò kéré jù láàrín àwọn ọmọ-aládé Juda; nítorí láti inú rẹ ni Baálẹ̀ kan yóò ti jáde, ẹni ti yóò ṣe ìtọ́jú Israẹli, àwọn ènìyàn mi.’”
‘And thou, Bethlehem in Judah’s land, art in no way least among the chief cities of Judah; for out of thee will come a Chieftain — one who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Nígbà náà ni Herodu ọba pe àwọn amòye náà sí ìkọ̀kọ̀, ó sì wádìí ni ọwọ́ wọn, àkókò náà gan an tí wọ́n kọ́kọ́ rí ìràwọ̀.
Then Herod secretly sent for the Astrologers, and ascertained from them the date of the appearance of the star;
8 Ó sì rán wọn lọ sí Bẹtilẹhẹmu, ó sì wí pé, “Ẹ lọ ṣe ìwádìí fínní fínní ní ti ọmọ náà tí a bí. Lẹ́yìn tí ẹ bá sì rí i, ẹ padà wá sọ fún mi, kí èmi náà le lọ foríbalẹ̀ fún un.”
and, sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go and make careful inquiries about the child, and, as soon as you have found him, bring me word, that I, too, may go and do homage to him.”
9 Nígbà tí wọ́n sì gbọ́ ọ̀rọ̀ ọba, wọ́n mú ọ̀nà wọn pọ̀n, sì wò ó, ìràwọ̀ tí wọ́n ti rí láti ìhà ìlà-oòrùn wá, ó ṣáájú wọn, títí tí ó fi dúró lókè ibi tí ọmọ náà gbé wà.
The Astrologers heard what the King had to say, and then continued their journey. And the star which they had seen in the east led them on, until it reached, and stood over, the place where the child was.
10 Nígbà tí wọ́n sì rí ìràwọ̀ náà, ayọ̀ kún ọkàn wọn.
At the sight of the star they were filled with joy.
11 Bí wọ́n tí wọ inú ilé náà, wọn rí ọmọ ọwọ́ náà pẹ̀lú Maria ìyá rẹ̀, wọ́n wólẹ̀, wọ́n foríbalẹ̀ fún un. Nígbà náà ni wọ́n tú ìṣúra wọn, wọ́n sì ta Jesu lọ́rẹ: wúrà, tùràrí àti òjìá.
Entering the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary, and fell at his feet and did homage to him. Then they unpacked their treasures, and offered to the child presents of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
12 Nítorí pé Ọlọ́run ti kìlọ̀ fún wọn ní ojú àlá pé kí wọ́n má ṣe padà tọ Herodu lọ mọ́, wọ́n gba ọ̀nà mìíràn lọ sí ìlú wọn.
But afterwards, having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another road.
13 Nígbà tí wọn ti lọ, angẹli Olúwa fi ara hàn Josẹfu ní ojú àlá pé, “Dìde, gbé ọmọ ọwọ́ náà àti ìyá rẹ̀, kí ó sì sálọ sí Ejibiti. Dúró níbẹ̀ títí tí èmi yóò fi sọ fún ọ, nítorí Herodu yóò wá ọ̀nà láti pa ọmọ ọwọ́ náà.”
After they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and said: “Awake, take the child and his mother, and seek refuge in Egypt; and stay there until I bid you return, for Herod is about to search for the child, to put him to death.”
14 Nígbà náà ni ó sì dìde, ó mú ọmọ ọwọ́ náà àti ìyá rẹ̀ ní òru, ó sì lọ sí Ejibiti,
Joseph awoke, and taking the child and his mother by night, went into Egypt,

and there he stayed until Herod’s death; in fulfilment of these words of the Lord in the Prophet, where he says — ‘Out of Egypt I called my Son.’
16 Nígbà tí Herodu rí í pé àwọn amòye náà ti tan òun jẹ, ó bínú gidigidi, ó sì pàṣẹ kí a pa gbogbo àwọn ọmọkùnrin tí ó wà ní Bẹtilẹhẹmu àti ní ẹkùn rẹ̀ láti àwọn ọmọ ọdún méjì sílẹ̀ gẹ́gẹ́ bi àkókò tí ó ti fi ẹ̀sọ̀ ẹ̀sọ̀ béèrè lọ́wọ́ àwọn amòye náà.
When Herod found that he had been trifled with by the Astrologers, he was very angry. He sent and put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and the whole of that neighbourhood, who were two years old or under, guided by the date which he had ascertained from the Astrologers.
17 Nígbà náà ni èyí tí a ti sọtẹ́lẹ̀ láti ẹnu wòlíì Jeremiah wá ṣẹ pé:
Then were fulfilled these words spoken in the Prophet Jeremiah, where he says —
18 “A gbọ́ ohùn kan ní Rama, ohùn réré ẹkún àti ọ̀fọ̀ ńlá, Rakeli ń sọkún àwọn ọmọ rẹ̀. Ó kọ̀ láti gbìpẹ̀ nítorí àwọn ọmọ rẹ̀ kò sí mọ́.”
‘A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and much lamentation; Rachel, weeping for her children, refused all comfort because they were not.’
19 Lẹ́yìn ikú Herodu, angẹli Olúwa fi ara hàn Josẹfu lójú àlá ní Ejibiti
But, on the death of Herod, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said:
20 Ó sì wí fún un pé, “Dìde gbé ọmọ ọwọ́ náà àti ìyá rẹ̀ padà sí ilẹ̀ Israẹli, nítorí àwọn tí ń wá ẹ̀mí ọmọ ọwọ́ náà láti pa ti kú.”
“Awake, take the child and his mother, and go into the Land of Israel, for those who sought to take the child’s life are dead.”
21 Nítorí náà, o sì dìde, ó gbé ọmọ ọwọ́ náà àti ìyá rẹ̀ ó sì wá sí ilẹ̀ Israẹli.
And he awoke, and taking the child and his mother, went into the Land of Israel.

But, hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as King of Judea, he was afraid to go back there; and having been warned in a dream, he went into the part of the country called Galilee.
23 ó sì lọ í gbé ní ìlú tí a pè ní Nasareti. Nígbà náà ni èyí tí a sọtẹ́lẹ̀ láti ẹnu àwọn wòlíì wá sí ìmúṣẹ: “A ó pè é ní ará Nasareti.”
And there he settled in the town of Nazareth, in fulfilment of these words in the Prophets — ‘He will be called a Nazarene.’
