< Jeremiah 38 >
1 Ṣefatia ọmọ Mattani, Gedaliah ọmọ Paṣuri, Jehukali ọmọ Ṣelemiah, àti Paṣuri ọmọ Malkiah, gbọ́ ohun tí Jeremiah ń sọ fún àwọn ènìyàn nígbà tí ó sọ wí pé,
Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard what Jeremiah was telling everyone:
2 “Èyí ni ohun tí Olúwa wí: ‘Ẹnikẹ́ni tó bá dúró nínú ìlú yìí yóò kú nípa idà, ìyàn àti àjàkálẹ̀-ààrùn; ṣùgbọ́n ẹnikẹ́ni tó bá lọ sí Babeli yóò yè; yóò sá àsálà, yóò sì yè.’
This is what the Lord says: Anyone who remains in this city will die from war and famine and disease, but anyone who goes over to the Babylonians will live. Their reward will be to save their lives.
3 Àti pé èyí ni ohun tí Olúwa wí: ‘Ìdánilójú wà wí pé a ó fi ìlú náà lé ọwọ́ àwọn ọmọ-ogun ọba Babeli; tí yóò sì kó wa nígbèkùn.’”
This is what the Lord says: Be sure of this—Jerusalem will be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon. He is going to capture it.
4 Nígbà náà ni àwọn ìjòyè wí fún ọba pé, “Ó yẹ kí a pa ọkùnrin yìí; ó ń kó ìrẹ̀wẹ̀sì bá àwọn ọmọ-ogun tókù nínú ìlú pẹ̀lú gbogbo àwọn ènìyàn nípa ohun tí ó ń sọ fún wọn. Ọkùnrin yìí kò fẹ́ ìre fún àwọn ènìyàn bí kò ṣe ìparun.”
The officers told the king, “This man deserves to die because he's demoralizing the defenders left in the city, and all the people too, by telling them this. This man isn't trying to help these people, he's only going to destroy them.”
5 Sedekiah ọba sì wí pé, “Ó wà lọ́wọ́ yín. Ọba kò lè ṣe ohunkóhun láti takò yín.”
“Well, you can do whatever you want to him,” King Zedekiah replied. “I can't stop you.”
6 Wọ́n gbé Jeremiah sọ sínú ihò Malkiah, ọmọ ọba, tí ó wà ní àgbàlá ilé túbú; wọ́n fi okùn sọ Jeremiah kalẹ̀ sí ìsàlẹ̀ ihò; kò sì ṣí omi nínú ihò náà bí kò ṣe ẹrọ̀fọ̀, Jeremiah sì rì sínú ẹrọ̀fọ̀ náà.
So they took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern belonging to Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the guard's courtyard. They lowered Jeremiah down with ropes into the cistern. It didn't have any water, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
7 Ṣùgbọ́n, Ebedimeleki, ará Kuṣi ìjòyè nínú ààfin ọba gbọ́ pé wọ́n ti ju Jeremiah sínú kànga. Nígbà tí ọba jókòó ní ẹnu-bodè Benjamini.
Ebed-melech the Cushite, a royal official in the king's palace, found out that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. The king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,
8 Ebedimeleki jáde kúrò láàfin ọba, ó sì sọ fún un pé,
so Ebed-melech left the palace and went to talk to the king
9 “Olúwa mi ọba, àwọn ènìyàn wọ̀nyí ti ṣe ohun búburú sí Jeremiah wòlíì Ọlọ́run. Wọ́n ti gbé e sọ sínú kànga níbi tí kò sí oúnjẹ kankan nínú ìlú mọ́.”
“My lord the king, all these terrible things these men have done to Jeremiah the prophet are evil. They've put him in the cistern, and he'll starve to death there because there's no more bread left in the city.”
10 Nígbà náà ni ọba pàṣẹ fún Ebedimeleki ará Kuṣi pé, “Mú ọgbọ̀n ọkùnrin láti ibí pẹ̀lú rẹ, kí ẹ sì fa wòlíì Jeremiah sókè láti inú ihò, kí ó tó kú.”
So the king gave the order to Ebed-melech the Cushite, “Take thirty men with you and go and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
11 Ebedimeleki kó àwọn ọkùnrin náà pẹ̀lú rẹ̀, wọ́n lọ sínú yàrá kan nínú ààfin ọba. Ó mú àwọn aṣọ àkísà àti okùn tọ Jeremiah lọ nínú kànga.
Ebed-melech took the men and went to the storehouse under the palace. He took some rags and old clothes from there and then went to the cistern where he lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah.
12 Ebedimeleki ará Kuṣi sọ fún Jeremiah pé, “Fi àkísà àti okùn bọ abẹ́ abíyá rẹ, Jeremiah sì ṣe bẹ́ẹ̀.”
Ebed-melech the Cushite called down to Jeremiah, “Put these rags and old clothes under your arms to protect you from the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
13 Báyìí ni wọ́n ṣe fi okùn yọ Jeremiah jáde, wọ́n sì mu un gòkè láti inú ihò wá, Jeremiah sì wà ní àgbàlá ilé túbú.
and using the ropes they pulled him up and took him out of the cistern. Jeremiah stayed there in the guard's courtyard.
14 Nígbà náà ni ọba Sedekiah ránṣẹ́ pe, Jeremiah òjíṣẹ́ Ọlọ́run àti láti mú un wá sí ẹnu ibodè kẹta nílé Olúwa. Ọba sì sọ fún Jeremiah pé, “Èmi yóò bi ọ́ ní ohun kan; má sì ṣe fi ohun kan pamọ́ fún mi.”
Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and met him at the third Temple entrance. “I need to ask you something,” the king told Jeremiah. “You mustn't hide anything from me.”
15 Jeremiah sì sọ fún Sedekiah pé, “Tí mo bá fún ọ ní èsì, ṣé o kò nípa mí? Tí mo bá gbà ọ́ nímọ̀ràn, o kò ní gbọ́ tèmi.”
“If I tell you then you'll definitely have me killed,” Jeremiah replied. “Even if I were to give you advice, you wouldn't listen to me anyway.”
16 Ṣùgbọ́n ọba Sedekiah búra ní ìkọ̀kọ̀ fún Jeremiah wí pé, “Dájúdájú bí Olúwa ti ń bẹ, ẹni tí ó fún wa ní ẹ̀mí, èmi kò nípa ọ́ tàbí fà ọ́ fún àwọn tó ń lépa ẹ̀mí rẹ.”
King Zedekiah solemnly promised Jeremiah in private, “As the Lord lives, who gave us this life, I won't have you killed, and I won't hand you over to those who want to kill you.”
17 Nígbà náà ni Jeremiah sọ fún Sedekiah pé, “Èyí ni ohun tí Olúwa Ọlọ́run alágbára, Ọlọ́run Israẹli wí: ‘Àyàfi bí o bá jọ̀wọ́ ara rẹ fún àwọn olóyè ọba Babeli, a ó dá ẹ̀mí rẹ sí àti pé ìlú yìí kò ní di jíjó ní iná; ìwọ àti ilé rẹ yóò sì wà láààyè.
Then Jeremiah told Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you'll live. Jerusalem won't be burned down, and you and your family will survive.
18 Ṣùgbọ́n tí o kò bá jọ̀wọ́ ara rẹ fún àwọn ìjòyè ọba Babeli, a ó fa ìlú yìí lé ọwọ́ àwọn Babeli. Wọn yóò sì fi iná sun ún, ìwọ gan an kò ní le sá mọ́ wọn lọ́wọ́.’”
But if you don't hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it down, and you yourself won't escape being captured.”
19 Ọba Sedekiah sọ fún Jeremiah pé, “Mò ń bẹ̀rù àwọn Júù tó ti sálọ sí ilẹ̀ Babeli, nítorí pé àwọn ará Babeli lè fà mí lé wọn lọ́wọ́ láti fìyà jẹ mí.”
But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the those people of Judah who have gone over to the Babylonians, because the Babylonians might hand me over the them so they could abuse me.”
20 Jeremiah sì dáhùn wí pé, “Wọn kò ní fi ọ́ lé e lọ́wọ́. Pa ọ̀rọ̀ Olúwa mọ́ nípa ṣíṣe ohun tí mo sọ fún ọ; yóò sì dára fún ọ, ẹ̀mí rẹ yóò sì wà.
“They won't hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “If you obey what the Lord says by doing what I tell you, then things will go well for you and you'll live.
21 Ṣùgbọ́n bí ìwọ bá kọ̀ láti jọ̀wọ́ ara rẹ, èyí ni ohun tí Olúwa ti fihàn mí.
But if you refuse to hand yourself over, this is what the Lord has told me:
22 Gbogbo àwọn obìnrin tókù ní ààfin ọba Juda ni wọn yóò kó jáde fún àwọn ìjòyè ọba Babeli. Àwọn obìnrin náà yóò sì sọ fún ọ pé: “‘Àwọn ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ tàn ọ́ jẹ, wọ́n sì borí rẹ. Ẹsẹ̀ rẹ rì sínú ẹrọ̀fọ̀; àwọn ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ ti fi ọ́ sílẹ̀.’
All the women who are left in the palace of the king of Judah will be led out and handed over to the officials of the king of Babylon Those women will say: ‘Those good friends of yours! You were taken in by them and conquered by them. Your feet got stuck in the mid, so they abandoned you.’
23 “Wọn yóò kó àwọn ìyàwó àti ọmọ rẹ wá sí Babeli. Ìwọ gan an kò ní bọ́ níbẹ̀, ọba Babeli yóò mú ọ, wọn yóò sì jó ìlú yìí kanlẹ̀.”
All your wives and children will be handed over to the Chaldeans. And you yourself will not escape, for you will be captured by the king of Babylon, and Jerusalem will be burned down.”
24 Nígbà náà ni Sedekiah sọ fún Jeremiah pé, “Má ṣe jẹ́ kí ẹnikẹ́ni mọ̀ nípa ọ̀rọ̀ yìí, tàbí kí o kú.
Zedekiah warned Jeremiah, “Nobody can find out about this conversation, otherwise you'll die.
25 Tí àwọn ìjòyè bá mọ̀ pé mo bá ọ sọ̀rọ̀, tí wọ́n bá wá bá ọ wí pé, ‘Sọ fún wa ohun tí o bá ọba sọ tàbí ohun tí ọba sọ fún ọ; má ṣe fi pamọ́ fún wa tàbí kí a pa ọ́,’
If the officers find out that I've talked with you, and they come and ask you, ‘Tell us what you and the king were talking about! Don't hide anything from us, or we'll kill you;’
26 nígbà náà kí o sọ fún wọn, ‘Mò ń bẹ ọba láti má jẹ́ kí n padà lọ sí ilé Jonatani láti lọ kú síbẹ̀.’”
then you are to tell them, ‘I was asking the king to grant my request not to return me to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”
27 Gbogbo àwọn olóyè sì wá sí ọ̀dọ̀ Jeremiah láti bi í léèrè, ó sì sọ gbogbo ohun tí ọba ní kí ó sọ. Wọn kò sì sọ ohunkóhun mọ́, nítorí kò sí ẹni tí ó gbọ́ ọ̀rọ̀ tí òun àti ọba jọ sọ.
When all the officers came to Jeremiah wanting to know, he repeated to them exactly what the king had told him to say. So they didn't ask him anything more because no one had heard what had been said.
28 Jeremiah wà nínú àgbàlá àwọn ẹ̀ṣọ́ títí di ọjọ́ tí wọ́n fi kó Jerusalẹmu:
Jeremiah remained there in the guard's courtyard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
