< Genesis 11 >

1 Lẹ́yìn náà, gbogbo àgbáyé sì ń sọ èdè kan ṣoṣo.
So it came to pass that, all the earth, was of one manner of speech, —and of one stock of words.
2 Bí àwọn ènìyàn ṣe ń tẹ̀síwájú lọ sí ìhà ìlà-oòrùn, wọ́n rí pẹ̀tẹ́lẹ̀ kan ní ilẹ̀ Ṣinari, wọ́n sì tẹ̀dó síbẹ̀.
And it came to pass as they brake away onwards, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.
3 Wọ́n sì wí fún ara wọn pé, “Ẹ wá, ẹ jẹ́ kí a mọ bíríkì kí a sì sún wọ́n jìnà.” Bíríkì ni wọ́n ń lò ní ipò òkúta, àti ọ̀dà ilẹ̀ tí wọn ń lò láti mú wọn papọ̀ dípò ẹfun (òkúta láìmù tí wọ́n fi ń ṣe símẹ́ńtì àti omi).
Then said they, each man to his friend, Come on! let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly, —So the bricks, served them for stone, and bitumen, served them for mortar,
4 Nígbà náà ni wọ́n wí pé, “Ẹ wá, ẹ jẹ́ kí a tẹ ìlú kan dó fún ara wa, kí a sì kọ́ ilé ìṣọ́ kan tí yóò kan ọ̀run, kí a ba à lè ní orúkọ, kí a má sì tú káàkiri sórí gbogbo ilẹ̀ ayé.”
And they said Come on! let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower with its head in the heavens, so let us make for ourselves a name, —lest we be scattered abroad over the face of all the earth.
5 Ṣùgbọ́n, Olúwa sọ̀kalẹ̀ láti wo ìlú àti ilé ìṣọ́ tí àwọn ènìyàn náà ń kọ́.
And Yahweh came down, to behold the city, and the tower, —which the sons of men had built.
6 Olúwa wí pé, “Bí àwọn ènìyàn bá ń jẹ́ ọ̀kan àti èdè kan tí wọ́n sì bẹ̀rẹ̀ sí í ṣe iṣẹ́ yìí, kò sí ohun tí wọ́n gbèrò tí wọn kò ní le ṣe yọrí.
Then said Yahweh: Lo! one people and one manner of speech, have they all, this, then is what they have begun to do, —now, therefore, nothing will be withholden from them which they may plan to do.
7 Ẹ wá, ẹ jẹ́ kí a sọ̀kalẹ̀ lọ, kí a da èdè wọn rú kí èdè wọn má ba à yé ara wọn mọ́.”
Come on! let us go down, and there confuse their speech, —that they may not understand, each man the speech of his friend.
8 Olúwa sì tú wọn ká sórí ilẹ̀ gbogbo, wọ́n sì ṣíwọ́ ìlú náà tí wọn ń tẹ̀dó.
So Yahweh scattered them from thence over the face of all the earth, —and so they left off building the city.
9 Ìdí èyí ni a fi pè é ní Babeli nítorí ní ibẹ̀ ni Olúwa ti da èdè gbogbo ayé rú. Olúwa tí sì tú àwọn ènìyàn ká sí gbogbo orí ilẹ̀ ayé.
For this cause, was the name thereof called Babel ["Confusion"]; because there, did Yahweh confuse the speech of all the earth, —and, from thence, did Yahweh scatter them abroad, over the face of all the earth.
