< 2 Kings 10 >

There were seventy descendants of King Ahab who were living there in Samaria. Jehu wrote a letter [and made copies of it] and sent them to the rulers of the city, to the elders, and to those who raised and tutored Ahab’s children.
2 “Ní kété tí lẹ́tà bá ti dé ọ̀dọ̀ rẹ̀, níwọ̀n ìgbà tí àwọn ọmọ ọ̀gá rẹ wà pẹ̀lú rẹ, ìwọ sì ní àwọn kẹ̀kẹ́ àti àwọn ẹṣin, ìlú olódi kan pẹ̀lú ohun ìjà,
[This is what he wrote]: “You are the ones who are [taking care of] the king’s descendants. You have chariots and horses and weapons, and you live in cities that have walls around them. So as soon as you receive this letter,
3 yan èyí tí ó dára àti èyí tí ó níye jùlọ nínú àwọn ọmọkùnrin ọ̀gá à rẹ, kí o sì gbé e lé orí ìtẹ́ baba a rẹ̀. Nígbà náà, kí o sì jà fún ilé ọ̀gá à rẹ.”
choose one of the king’s sons, the one who is the best qualified, and appoint him to be your king. Then [prepare to] fight to defend him.”
4 Ṣùgbọ́n ẹ̀rù bà wọ́n, wọ́n sì wí pé, “Tí ọba méjì kò bá le kojú ìjà sí i, báwo ni a ṣẹ le è ṣe é?”
But [when they got those letters from Jehu and read them], they became very afraid. They said, “King Joram and King Ahaziah could not resist him; (how can we resist him?/we cannot possibly resist him!)” [RHQ]
5 Bẹ́ẹ̀ ẹni tí ń ṣe olórí ilé, ẹni tí ń ṣe olórí ìlú ńlá, àwọn àgbàgbà àti àwọn olùtọ́jú náà rán iṣẹ́ yìí sí Jehu, pé, “Ìránṣẹ́ rẹ ni àwa jẹ́ pẹ̀lú, àwa yóò ṣe ohunkóhun tí o bá sọ. Àwa kì yóò yan ẹnikẹ́ni gẹ́gẹ́ bí ọba; ìwọ ṣe ohunkóhun tí o rò pé ó dára jù lójú rẹ.”
So the officer who was in charge of the palace and the mayor of the city sent a message to Jehu saying, “We want to serve you, and we are ready to do whatever you tell us to do. We will not appoint anyone to become our king. You do whatever you think is best.”
6 Nígbà náà ni Jehu kọ lẹ́tà kejì sí wọn, wí pé, “Tí ìwọ bá wà ní ìhà tèmi, tí o sì pa ọ̀rọ̀ mi mọ́, mú orí àwọn ọmọkùnrin ọ̀gá à rẹ wá sí ọ̀dọ̀ mi ní Jesreeli ní ìwòyí ọ̀la.” Nísinsin yìí, àwọn ọmọ-aládé àádọ́rin ọkùnrin, ń bẹ pẹ̀lú àwọn ènìyàn ńlá ìlú náà tí ń tọ́ wọn.
So Jehu sent a second letter to them, writing this: “If you (are on my side/want to help me), and if you are ready to obey me, [kill] King Ahab’s descendants [and cut off their heads and] bring their heads to me here in Jezreel at this time tomorrow.” The seventy descendants of King Ahab were being brought up and supervised by the leaders of [Samaria] city.
7 Nígbà tí ìwé náà dé ọ̀dọ̀ wọn, àwọn ọkùnrin wọ̀nyí mú gbogbo àwọn ọmọ ọba tí gbogbo wọ́n jẹ́ àádọ́rin wọ́n sì pa gbogbo wọn. Wọ́n gbé orí wọn sí inú apẹ̀rẹ̀, wọ́n fi ránṣẹ́ sí Jehu ní Jesreeli.
When they received the letter from Jehu, they killed all seventy of Ahab’s descendants and [cut off their heads]. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel.
8 Nígbà tí ìránṣẹ́ náà dé, ó sọ fún Jehu, “Wọ́n ti gbé orí àwọn ọmọ ọba náà wá.” Nígbà náà Jehu pàṣẹ, “Ẹ tò wọ́n ní òkìtì méjì ní àtiwọ ẹnu ibodè ìlú ńlá títí di òwúrọ̀.”
A messenger came to Jehu and told him, “They have brought the heads of Ahab’s descendants.” So Jehu commanded that the heads should be put in two piles at the city gate and that the heads should stay there until the next morning.
9 Ní òwúrọ̀ ọjọ́ kejì, Jehu jáde lọ. Ó dúró níwájú gbogbo àwọn ènìyàn, ó sì wí pé, “Ẹ̀yin jẹ́ aláìjẹ̀bi. Èmi ni mo dìtẹ̀ sí ọ̀gá mi, tí mo sì pa á, ṣùgbọ́n ta ni ó pa gbogbo àwọn wọ̀nyí?
The next morning he went out [to the city gate] and said to all the people, “I am the one who plotted against King Joram and killed him. You are not guilty of doing that. But [it was Yahweh, not I] [RHQ] who [commanded that] all these [descendants of Ahab should be] killed.
10 Nígbà yìí, kò sí ọ̀rọ̀ kan tí Olúwa ti sọ sí ilé Ahabu tí yóò kùnà. Olúwa ti ṣe ohun tí ó ṣèlérí nípasẹ̀ ìránṣẹ́ rẹ̀ Elijah.”
So you need to know that everything that Yahweh said would happen has happened. He has caused to happen what he told the prophet Elijah would happen.”
11 Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni Jehu pa gbogbo ẹni tí ó kù Jesreeli ní ilé Ahabu, pẹ̀lúpẹ̀lú gbogbo àwọn ọkùnrin ìjòyè rẹ̀, àwọn ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ̀ tímọ́tímọ́ àti àwọn àlùfáà rẹ̀, láì ku ẹni tí ó yọ nínú ewu fún un.
Then Jehu executed all the other relatives of Ahab in Jezreel, and all Ahab’s officers, and close friends, and his priests. He did not allow any of them to remain alive.
12 Jehu jáde lọ, ó sì lọ sí ọ̀kánkán Samaria. Ní Beti-Ekedi tí àwọn olùṣọ́-àgùntàn.
Then Jehu left [Jezreel] and went toward Samaria. While he was going there, at a place called ‘Shepherds’ Camp’,
13 Jehu pàdé díẹ̀ lára àwọn ìbátan Ahasiah ọba Juda, ó sì béèrè, “Ta ni ẹ̀yin ń ṣe?” Wọ́n wí pé, “Àwa jẹ́ ìbátan Ahasiah, àwa sì ti wá láti kí ìdílé ọba àti ti màmá ayaba.”
he met some relatives of King Ahaziah of Judah. He asked them, “Who are you?” They replied, “We are relatives of King Ahaziah. We are going to Jezreel to visit the children of Queen Jezebel and the other members of King [Joram’s] family.”
14 “Mú wọn láààyè!” ó pàṣẹ. Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni wọ́n mú wọn láààyè, wọ́n sì pa wọ́n ní ẹ̀bá kọ̀nga Beti-Ekedi, ọkùnrin méjìlélógójì. Kò sì fi ẹnìkan sílẹ̀ láìkù.
Jehu said to his men, “Seize them!” So they seized them and killed all of them at the pit named Beth-Eked. There were 42 people whom they killed; they did not allow any of them to remain alive.
15 Nígbà tí a sì jáde níbẹ̀, ó rí Jehonadabu ọmọ Rekabu ń bọ̀ wá pàdé rẹ̀, ó sì súre fún un, ó sì wí fún pé, “Ọkàn rẹ ha ṣe déédé bí ọkàn mi ti rí sí ọkàn rẹ?” Jehonadabu dáhùn wí pé, “Èmi wà.” Jehu wí pé, “Bí ó bá jẹ́ bẹ́ẹ̀, fún mi ní ọwọ́ ọ̀ rẹ.” Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ó ṣe pẹ̀lú, Jehu sì fà á lọ́wọ́ sókè sọ́dọ̀ rẹ̀ nínú kẹ̀kẹ́.
Then Jehu [continued to travel toward Samaria]. Along the road, he was met by Jonadab, a leader of the Rechab clan. Jehu greeted him and said to him, “Are you as devoted to me [IDM] as I am devoted to you?” Jonadab replied, “Yes, I am.” Jehu said, “If you are, shake hands with me.” So Jonadab shook hands with him, and Jehu helped him to get into his chariot.
16 Jehu wí pé, “Wá pẹ̀lú mi, kí o sì rí ìtara mi fún Olúwa.” Nígbà náà ó jẹ́ kí ó gun kẹ̀kẹ́ rẹ̀.
Jehu said to him, “Come with me, and you will see that I am very devoted to Yahweh.” So they rode together to Samaria.
17 Nígbà tí Jehu wá sí Samaria, ó pa gbogbo àwọn tí a fi kalẹ̀ ní ìdílé Ahabu; ó pa wọ́n run, gẹ́gẹ́ bí ọ̀rọ̀ Olúwa tí a sọ sí Elijah.
When they arrived in Samaria, Jehu killed all of Ahab’s relatives who were still alive. He did not (spare any of them/allow any of them to remain alive). That was what Yahweh told Elijah would happen.
18 Nígbà náà, Jehu kó gbogbo àwọn ènìyàn jọ, ó sì wí fún wọn pé, “Ahabu sin Baali díẹ̀; ṣùgbọ́n Jehu yóò sìn ín púpọ̀.
Then Jehu summoned all the people [of Samaria], and said to them, “King Ahab was devoted to [your god] Baal a little bit, but I will serve him much more.
19 Nísinsin yìí, ẹ pe gbogbo àwọn wòlíì Baali jọ fún mi, gbogbo àwọn ìránṣẹ́ rẹ̀ àti gbogbo àlùfáà rẹ̀, má ṣe jẹ́ kí ọ̀kan kí ó kù, nítorí èmí yóò rú ẹbọ ńlá sí Baali. Ẹnikẹ́ni tí ó bá kọ̀ láti wá, kò ní wà láààyè mọ́.” Ṣùgbọ́n Jehu fi ẹ̀tàn ṣe é, kí ó lè pa àwọn òjíṣẹ́ Baali run.
So now summon all the prophets of Baal, all of Baal’s priests, and all the others who worship Baal. I am going to make a great sacrifice to Baal. I want all of them to be there. Any of them who is not there will be executed.” But Jehu was planning to trick them; he was planning to kill all those who worshiped Baal.
20 Jehu wí pé, “ẹ pe àpéjọ ní ìwòyí ọ̀la fún Baali.” Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni wọ́n kéde rẹ.
Then Jehu commanded, “Announce that we are going to set aside a day to honor Baal.” So they did that.
21 Nígbà náà, Jehu rán ọ̀rọ̀ káàkiri Israẹli, gbogbo àwọn òjíṣẹ́ Baali sì wá: kò sí ẹnìkan tí ó dúró lẹ́yìn. Wọ́n kún ilé tí a kọ́ fún òrìṣà títí tí ó fi kún láti ìkangun èkínní títí dé èkejì.
Jehu [decided what day they would gather and] sent messages throughout Israel [telling everyone what day to gather on], and on that day, everyone who worshiped Baal came. No one stayed at home. They all went into the huge temple of Baal and filled it from one end to the other.
22 Jehu sì sọ fún olùṣọ́ pé, “Kí ó mú aṣọ ìgúnwà wá fún gbogbo àwọn òjíṣẹ́ Baali.” Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ó mú aṣọ ìgúnwà jáde wá fún wọn.
Jehu told the priest who took care of the sacred robes to bring them out and give them to the people who worshiped Baal. So the priest did that.
23 Nígbà náà, Jehu àti Jehonadabu ọmọ Rekabu lọ sí inú ilé tí a kọ́ fún òrìṣà Baali. Jehu sì wí fún àwọn òjíṣẹ́ Baali pé, “Wò ó yíká, kí o sì rí i pé kò sí ìránṣẹ́ Olúwa kankan pẹ̀lú yín níbí—kìkì òjíṣẹ́ Baali.”
Then Jehu went into the temple of Baal with Jonadab, and he said to the people who were there to worship Baal, “Be sure that only those who worship Baal are here. Be sure that no one who worships Yahweh has come in.”
24 Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni wọ́n wọ inú ilé lọ láti lọ rú ẹbọ àti ẹbọ sísun. Nísinsin yìí Jehu ti rán ọgọ́rin ọkùnrin sí ìta pẹ̀lú ìkìlọ̀ yìí: “Tí ẹnikẹ́ni nínú yín bá jẹ́ kí ẹnikẹ́ni nínú àwọn ọkùnrin tí mo ń gbé sí ọwọ́ yín ó sálọ, yóò jẹ́ ẹ̀mí yín fún ẹ̀mí rẹ.”
Then he and Jonadab prepared to offer sacrifices and other offerings to Baal that would be completely burned [on the altar that was there in Samaria]. But Jehu had stationed eighty of his men outside the temple, and had said to them, “I want you to kill all the people [who are in the temple]. Anyone who allows one of them to escape will be executed!”
25 Ní kété tí Jehu ti parí ṣíṣe ẹbọ sísun, ó pàṣẹ fún àwọn olùṣọ́ àti àwọn ìjòyè: “Wọlé lọ, kí o sì pa wọ́n, má ṣe jẹ́ kí ẹnikẹ́ni kí ó sálọ.” Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni wọ́n gé wọn lulẹ̀ pẹ̀lú idà. Àwọn olùṣọ́ àti ìjòyè ju ara wọn síta, wọ́n sì wọ inú ojúbọ ti ilé tí a kọ́ fún òrìṣà Baali.
As soon as Jehu [and Jonadab] had finished killing the animals that would be completely burned to be an offering to Baal, they [went outside and] said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill all of them! Do not allow any of them to escape!” So the guards and officers went in and killed them all with their swords. Then they dragged their corpses outside the temple. Then they went into the inner room of the temple,
26 Wọ́n gbé òkúta bíbọ náà jáde láti inú ilé tí a kọ́ fún òrìṣà Baali, wọ́n sì jó o.
and they carried out the sacred pillar of Baal that was there, and they burned it.
27 Wọ́n fọ́ òkúta bíbọ ti Baali náà túútúú, wọ́n sì ya ilé òrìṣà Baali bolẹ̀. Àwọn ènìyàn sì ń lò ó fún ilé ìgbẹ́ títí di ọjọ́ òní.
So they destroyed that pillar that honored Baal, and then they burned down the temple, and made it a public toilet. And it is still a toilet!
28 Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni Jehu pa sí sin Baali run ní Israẹli.
That is how Jehu got rid of the worship of Baal in Israel.
29 Bí ó ti wù kí ó rí, Jehu kò yípadà kúrò nínú ẹ̀ṣẹ̀ Jeroboamu ọmọ Nebati, tí ó ṣokùnfà Israẹli láti dá—ti sí sin ẹgbọrọ màlúù wúrà ní Beteli àti Dani.
But Jehu did not quit committing the kinds of sins that Jeroboam had committed, sins that led the people of Israel to sin by worshiping the gold [statues of] calves in Bethel and Dan [cities].
30 Olúwa sì sọ fún Jehu pé, “Nítorí ìwọ ti ṣe dáradára ní ṣíṣe èyí tí ó tọ́ ní ojú mi, tí o sì ti ṣe sí ilé Ahabu gẹ́gẹ́ bí gbogbo èyí tí ó wà ní ọkàn mi, àwọn ọmọ ọ̀ rẹ yóò jókòó lórí ìtẹ́ Israẹli títí dé ìran kẹrin.”
Then Yahweh said to Jehu, “You have done what pleased me by getting rid of all of Ahab’s descendants. So I promise you that your son and grandson and great-grandson and great-great-grandson will all be kings of Israel.”
31 Síbẹ̀ Jehu kò ṣe pẹ̀lẹ́ láti pa òfin Olúwa, Ọlọ́run Israẹli mọ́ pẹ̀lú tọkàntọkàn. Òun kò yípadà kúrò nínú ẹ̀ṣẹ̀ Jeroboamu èyí tí ó ṣokùnfà Israẹli láti dá.
But Jehu did not obey all the laws of Yahweh, the God of the Israeli people. He did not stop committing the sins that Jeroboam had committed, sins that led the Israeli people to sin.
32 Ní ọjọ́ wọ̀n-ọn-nì, Olúwa ti bẹ̀rẹ̀ sí ní dín iye Israẹli kù. Hasaeli fi agbára jẹ ọba lórí àwọn ọmọ Israẹli ní gbogbo agbègbè wọn.
At that time, Yahweh began to cause the territory controlled by Israel to become smaller. [The army of] King Hazael [of Syria] conquered much of the Israeli territory.
33 Ìlà-oòrùn ti Jordani ni gbogbo ilẹ̀ ti Gileadi (ẹ̀kún ilẹ̀ ti ará Gadi, Reubeni, àti Manase) láti Aroeri, tí ó wà létí kòtò Arnoni láti ìhà Gileadi sí Baṣani.
He conquered the parts east of the Jordan [River], as far south as Aroer [town] on the Arnon [River]. That included [the] Gilead and Bashan [regions], where the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of the tribe of Manasseh lived.
34 Fún ti òmíràn ti iṣẹ́ ìjọba Jehu, gbogbo ohun tí ó ṣe, gbogbo àṣeyọrí rẹ̀, ṣé a kò kọ wọ́n sí inú ìwé ìtàn ayé àwọn ọba Israẹli?
[If you want to read more] about all the other things that Jehu did [RHQ], they are written in the scroll called ‘The History of the Kings of Israel’.
35 Jehu sinmi pẹ̀lú baba a rẹ̀, a sì sin ín sí Samaria Jehoahasi ọmọ rẹ̀ sì rọ́pò rẹ̀ gẹ́gẹ́ bí ọba.
Jehu died [EUP], and was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoahaz became the king in place of his father.
36 Àkókò tí Jehu fi jẹ ọba lórí Israẹli ní Samaria jẹ́ ọdún méjìdínlọ́gbọ̀n.
Jehu had ruled in Samaria as the king of Israel for twenty-eight years.
