1 Đoạn, cả hội đồng đứng dậy, điệu Ngài đến trước mặt Phi-lát
AND the whole multitude of them rising up, led him to Pilate,
2 Họ bèn khởi cáo Ngài rằng: Chúng tôi đã thấy người nầy xui dân ta làm loạn, cấm nộp thuế cho Sê-sa, và xưng mình là Đấng Christ, là Vua.
and began to accuse him, saying, We have found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar; pretending that he himself is the King Messiah.
3 Phi-lát gạn Ngài rằng: Chính ngươi là Vua dân Giu-đa phải không? Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Thật như lời.
Then Pilate interrogated him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said to him, Thou sayest so.
4 Phi-lát bèn nói với các thầy tế lễ cả và dân chúng rằng: Ta không thấy người nầy có tội gì.
Then said Pilate unto the chief priests and the multitudes, I find nothing culpable in this man.
5 Nhưng họ cố nài rằng: Người nầy xui giục dân sự, truyền giáo khắp đất Giu-đê, bắt đầu từ xứ Ga-li-lê rồi đến đây.
But they were urgent, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching through all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place.
6 Khi Phi-lát nghe điều đó, thì hỏi nếu người nầy thật là dân Ga-li-lê chăng.
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean?
7 Biết Ngài thuộc quyền cai trị của vua Hê-rốt, bèn giải đến cho vua Hê-rốt, vua ấy ở tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem trong mấy ngày đó.
And when he knew that he came out of Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was himself at Jerusalem in those days.
8 Vua Hê-rốt thấy Đức Chúa Jêsus thì mừng lắm; vì lâu nay vua muốn gặp Ngài, nhân đã nghe nói về chuyện Ngài, và mong xem Ngài làm phép lạ.
Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was vastly delighted: for he had been long desirous to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some miracle wrought by him.
9 Vậy, vua hỏi Ngài nhiều câu, song Ngài không trả lời gì hết.
And he put a variety of questions to him; but he made him no reply.
10 Các thầy tế lễ cả và các thầy thông giáo ở đó, cáo Ngài dữ lắm.
And the chief priests and the scribes stood up vehemently accusing him.
11 Bấy giờ vua Hê-rốt và quân lính hầu vua đều đãi Ngài cách khinh dể và nhạo báng Ngài; đoạn, họ mặc áo hoa hòe cho Ngài, rồi giao Ngài về cho Phi-lát.
Then Herod with his guards treated him with contempt, and in derision clothed him in a splendid robe, and sent him back to Pilate.
12 Trước kia Phi-lát với vua Hê-rốt thù hiềm nhau, nhưng nội ngày ấy trở nên bạn hữu.
And Pilate and Herod the same day became friends together: for they had previously been at enmity with each other.
13 Phi-lát hiệp các thầy tế lễ cả, các quan đề hình và dân chúng lại, mà nói rằng:
Then Pilate, convoking the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14 Các ngươi đã đem nộp người nầy cho ta, về việc xui dân làm loạn; nhưng đã tra hỏi trước mặt các ngươi đây, thì ta không thấy người mắc một tội nào mà các ngươi đã cáo;
said unto them, Ye have brought this man to me, as one who perverteth the people: and lo! on examining him before you, I have found nothing culpable in this man, respecting the charges ye bring against him:
15 vua Hê-rốt cũng vậy, vì đã giao người về cho ta. Vậy, người nầy đã không làm điều gì đáng chết,
nor Herod neither: for I referred you to him; and, lo, nothing is done to this man, as if he deserved death.
16 nên ta sẽ đánh đòn rồi tha đi.
I will therefore, after scourging, discharge him.
17 (Số là đến ngày lễ, quan phải tha một tên tù cho dân.)
(Now he held it necessary to release one to them at the feast.)
18 Chúng bèn đồng thanh kêu lên rằng: Hãy giết người nầy đi, mà tha Ba-ra- ba cho chúng tôi!
Then the whole multitude set up a cry, saying, Away with this fellow, and release unto us Barabbas!
19 Vả, tên nầy bị tù vì dấy loạn trong thành, và vì tội giết người.
(who for a certain sedition raised in the city, and for murder, had been cast into prison.)
20 Phi-lát có ý muốn tha Đức Chúa Jêsus, nên lại nói cùng dân chúng nữa.
Again therefore Pilate called out to them, desirous to see Jesus at liberty.
21 Song chúng kêu lên rằng: Đóng đinh nó trên cây thập tự đi! Đóng đinh nó trên cây thập tự đi!
But they clamoured the more, saying, Crucify, crucify him.
22 Phi-lát lại nói đến lần thứ ba, rằng: Vậy người nầy đã làm điều ác gì? Ta không tìm thấy người có sự gì đáng chết. Vậy, đánh đòn xong, ta sẽ tha.
Then the third time he said to them, What evil hath this man done? I have found nothing deserving death in him: I will therefore, after scourging, discharge him.
23 Nhưng chúng cố nài, kêu lớn tiếng rằng phải đóng đinh Ngài trên cây thập tự; tiếng kêu của họ được thắng.
But they were instant with the most clamorous vociferations, soliciting that he might be crucified. And their clamours, and those of the chief priests, bore him down.
24 Phi-lát truyền làm y như lời chúng xin.
Then Pilate decreed that their petition should be granted.
25 Bèn tha tên tù vì tội dấy loạn và giết người, là người chúng đã xin tha; rồi phó Đức Chúa Jêsus cho mặc ý họ.
Then released he to them him who for sedition and murder had been cast into prison; but he gave up Jesus to their will.
26 Khi chúng điệu Đức Chúa Jêsus đi, bắt một người xứ Sy-ren, tên là Si- môn, từ ngoài đồng về, buộc phải vác cây thập tự theo sau Ngài.
And as they led him out, laying hold on one Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, they laid on him the cross, to carry after Jesus.
27 Có đoàn dân đông lắm đi theo Đức Chúa Jêsus, và có mấy người đàn bà đấm ngực khóc về Ngài.
And a great multitude of the people and of women followed him, who also beat their breasts and lamented him bitterly.
28 Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus xây mặt lại với họ mà phán rằng: Hỡi con gái thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, đừng khóc về ta, song khóc về chính mình các ngươi và về con cái các ngươi.
But Jesus turning to them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but for yourselves, and for your children.
29 Vì nầy, ngày hầu đến, người ta sẽ nói rằng: Phước cho đàn bà son, phước cho dạ không sanh đẻ và vú không cho con bú!
For, behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs which have not borne, and the breasts which never suckled.
30 Bấy giờ, người ta sẽ nói với núi rằng: Hãy đổ xuống trên chúng ta! với gò rằng: Hãy che chúng ta!
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us! and to the hills, Cover us!
31 Vì nếu người ta làm những sự ấy cho cây xanh, thì cây khô sẽ xảy ra sao?
For if they do all these things with the green wood, what will be done with the dry?
32 Chúng cũng đem hai người đi nữa, là kẻ trộm cướp, để giết cùng với Ngài.
Now there were two other persons, malefactors, led out with him to be executed.
33 Khi đến một chỗ gọi là chỗ Sọ, họ đóng đinh Ngài trên cây thập tự tại đó, cùng hai tên trộm cướp, một tên bên hữu Ngài, một tên bên tả.
And when they came to a place called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, the one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
34 Song Đức Chúa Jêsus cầu rằng: Lạy Cha, xin tha cho họ, vì họ không biết mình làm điều gì. Đoạn, họ bắt thăm chia nhau áo xống của Ngài.
And Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Then dividing his garments, they cast the lot.
35 Dân chúng đứng đó mà ngó. Các người coi việc nhạo cười Ngài, rằng: Nó đã cứu kẻ khác; nếu nó là Đấng Christ, Đấng Đức Chúa Trời đã lựa, thì hãy cứu mình đi!
And the people stood looking on. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if this fellow is the Messiah, the elect of God.
36 Quân lính cũng giỡn cợt Ngài, lại gần đưa giấm cho Ngài uống,
And the soldiers also insulted him, coming and offering him vinegar,
37 mà rằng: Nếu ngươi là Vua dân Giu-đa, hãy tự cứu lấy mình đi!
and saying, if thou art the King of the Jews, save thyself.
38 Phía trên đầu Ngài, có đề rằng: Người Nầy Là Vua Dân Giu-đa.
And there was an inscription written over him in Greek, Roman, and Hebrew characters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 Vả, một tên trộm cướp bị đóng đinh cũng mắng nhiếc Ngài rằng: Ngươi không phải là Đấng Christ sao? Hãy tự cứu lấy mình ngươi cùng chúng ta nữa!
Then one of the suspended malefactors blasphemed him, saying, If thou art the Messiah, save thyself and us.
40 Nhưng tên kia trách nó rằng: Ngươi cũng chịu một hình phạt ấy, còn chẳng sợ Đức Chúa Trời sao?
But the other addressing him, rebuked him, saying, Hast thou no fear of God, when thou art under the same condemnation?
41 Về phần chúng ta, chỉ là sự công bình, vì hình ta chịu xứng với việc ta làm; nhưng người nầy không hề làm một điều gì ác.
And we indeed justly, for we receive deserved punishment for the crimes we have committed: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 Đoạn lại nói rằng: Hỡi Jêsus, khi Ngài đến trong nước mình rồi, xin nhớ lấy tôi!
And he said to Jesus, Remember me, Lord, when thou comest in thy kingdom.
43 Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Quả thật, ta nói cùng ngươi, hôm nay ngươi sẽ được ở với ta trong nơi Ba-ra-đi.
And Jesus said to him. Verily I say unto thee, To-day thou shalt be with me in paradise.
44 Khi đó, ước giờ thứ sáu, khắp xứ đều tối tăm cho đến giờ thứ chín.
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
45 Mặt trời trở nên tối, và màn trong đền thờ xé chính giữa ra làm hai.
And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
46 Đức Chúa Jêsus bèn kêu lớn rằng: Hỡi Cha, tôi giao linh hồn lại trong tay Cha! Ngài vừa nói xong thì tắt hơi.
And Jesus crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit: and having said this, he expired.
47 Thầy đội thấy sự đã xảy ra, ngợi khen Đức Chúa Trời rằng: Thật người nầy là người công bình.
And the centurion observing what had come to pass, glorified God, saying, Verily this man was a righteous person.
48 Cả dân chúng đi xem, thấy nông nổi làm vậy, đấm ngực mà trở về.
And all the multitudes who had come together for this spectacle, when they saw the things which were done, beating their breasts, returned.
49 Song những kẻ quen biết Đức Chúa Jêsus và các người đàn bà theo Ngài từ xứ Ga-li-lê, đều đứng đằng xa mà ngó.
And all his acquaintance stood afar off, and the women which followed him from Galilee, beholding these things.
50 Có một người, tên là Giô-sép, làm nghị viên tòa công luận, là người chánh trực công bình,
And lo! a man named Joseph, being a member of the council, a good man, and a just;
51 không đồng ý và cũng không dự việc các người kia đã làm. Người ở A-ri- ma-thê, là thành thuộc về xứ Giu-đê, vẫn trông đợi nước Đức Chúa Trời.
(who had not given his assent to their determination and deed; ) being of Arimathea, a city of the Jews: who himself also expected the coming of the kingdom of God.
52 Người bèn đi đến Phi-lát mà xin xác Đức Chúa Jêsus.
He went in to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
53 Khi đã đem xác Ngài xuống khỏi cây thập tự, người lấy vải liệm mà bọc, rồi chôn trong huyệt đã đục nơi hòn đá, là huyệt chưa chôn ai hết.
And taking it down from the cross, he wrapped it in linen cloth, and laid it in a sepulchre hewn out of a rock, where none had ever yet lain.
54 Bấy giờ là ngày sắm sửa, và ngày Sa-bát gần tới.
And that was the preparation-day, and the sabbath’s twilight was approaching.
55 Các người đàn bà đã từ xứ Ga-li-lê đến với Đức Chúa Jêsus, theo Giô-sép, xem mả và cũng xem xác Ngài đặt thể nào. Khi trở về, họ sắm sửa những thuốc thơm và sáp thơm.
Then the women also, his attendants, who had followed him out of Galilee, observed the sepulchre, and how his corpse was laid out.
56 Ngày Sa-bát, họ nghỉ ngơi theo luật lệ.
And returning, they made preparation of aromatics and unguents; and they rested the sabbath-day, according to the commandment.
