Ê-xơ-ra 4

1 Khi các thù nghịch của Giu-đa và Bên-gia-min hay rằng những người đã bị bắt làm phu tù được về cất đền thờ cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên,

And adversaries of Judah and Benjamin hear that the sons of the captivity are building a temple to Jehovah, God of Israel,

2 bèn đi đến Xô-rô-ba-bên và các trưởng tộc mà nói rằng: Chúng tôi muốn đồng xây cất với các ngươi, vì chúng tôi tìm cầu Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, cũng như anh em, và chúng tôi đã tế lễ cho Ngài từ đời Ê-sa-Ha-đôn, vua A-si-ri, đem chúng tôi lên đây.

and they draw nigh unto Zerubbabel, and unto heads of the fathers, and say to them, 'Let us build with you; for, like you, we seek to your God, and we are not sacrificing since the days of Esar-Haddon king of Asshur, who brought us up hither.'

3 Nhưng Xô-rô-ba-bên, Giê-sua, và các trưởng tộc khác của Y-sơ-ra-ên, đáp với chúng rằng: Các ngươi chẳng được phần chung với chúng ta đặng cất một đền thờ cho Đức Chúa Trời của chúng ta; song chúng ta, chỉ một mình chúng ta, sẽ cất một đền cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, y như Si-ru, vua Phe-rơ-sơ, đã truyền bảo chúng ta.

And Zerubbabel saith to them, also Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, 'Not for you, and for us, to build a house to our God; but we ourselves together do build to Jehovah God of Israel, as the king Cyrus, king of Persia, commanded us.'

4 Bấy giờ dân của xứ xui cho dân Giu-đa ngã lòng nhát sợ, trong khi họ xây cất;

And it cometh to pass, the people of the land are making the hands of the people of Judah feeble, and troubling them in building,

5 và trọn đời Si-ru, vua Phe-rơ-sơ, cho đến đời Đa-ri-út, vua Phe-rơ-sơ, trị vì, chúng đem hối lộ cho những mưu sĩ chống với dân Giu-đa, đặng phá việc họ lo toan.

and are hiring against them counsellors to make void their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even till the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 Nhằm đời A-suê-ru, vừa bắt đầu lên ngôi, thì chúng làm một cái trạng cáo dân Giu-đa và dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the commencement of his reign, they have written an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem;

7 Qua đời Aït-ta-xét-xe, thì Bít-lam, Mít-rê-đát, Ta-bê-ên, và đồng liêu của chúng, viết biểu tấu lên Aït-ta-xét-xe, vua Phe-rơ-sơ. Cái biểu ấy viết bằng chữ A-ram và dịch ra tiếng A-ram.

and in the days of Artaxerxes have Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions written unto Artaxerxes king of Persia, and the writing of the letter is written in Aramaean, and interpreted in Aramaean.

8 Lại Rê-hum, tể tướng, và Sim-sai, thơ ký, đồng viết biểu nghịch cùng Giê-ru-sa-lem, tấu lên vua Aït-ta-xét-xe như vầy:

Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe have written a letter concerning Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king, thus:

9 Rê-hum, tể tướng, Sim-sai, thơ ký và các đồng liêu của họ, tức là người Đi-nít, người A-phạt-sa-thít, người Tạt-bê-lít, người A-phạt-sít, người Aït-kê-vít, người Ba-by-lôn, người Su-san, người Đê-ha-vít, người Ê-lam,

Then Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions, Dinaites, and Apharsathchites, Tarpelites, Apharsites, Archevites, Babylonians, Susanchites, (who are Elamites),

10 và dân sự khác mà Ô-náp-ba cao trọng và vang hiển đã đem qua, khiến ở trong thành Sa-ma-ri và trong các miền khác bên phía nầy sông.

and the rest of the nations that the great and honourable Asnapper removed and set in the city of Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, and at such a time:

11 Nầy là bản sao lại của bức biểu chúng gởi tấu vua Aït-ta-xét-xe. Các tôi tớ vua ở bên phía nầy sông, kính tấu vua Aït-ta-xét-xe.

This [is] a copy of a letter that they have sent unto him, unto Artaxerxes the king: 'Thy servants, men beyond the river, and at such a time;

12 Tâu vua hay rõ ràng những người Giu-đa đã từ nơi vua lên đến chúng tôi tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, đang lập lại thành phản nghịch hung ác ấy; chúng nó đã xây lại vách thành và tu bổ các nền cho xong rồi.

Be it known to the king, that the Jews who have come up from thee unto us, have come in to Jerusalem, the rebellious and base city they are building, and the walls they have finished, and the foundations they join.

13 Vậy, nguyện vua biết rõ ràng ví bằng thành nầy được cất lại, và vách tường nó được xây lên, tất dân nó sẽ chẳng tiến cống, nộp thuế, hoặc đóng tiền mãi lộ, rồi sau chắc sẽ gây họa cho vua.

'Now, be it known to the king, that if this city be builded, and the walls finished, toll, tribute, and custom they do not give; and at length [to] the kings it doth cause loss.

14 Vả, vì chúng tôi ăn muối của đền vua, và chẳng nỡ chứng kiến việc gây thiệt hại cho vua như vậy, nên chúng tôi sai sứ giả đến tâu rõ cùng vua,

Now, because that the salt of the palace [is] our salt, and the nakedness of the king we have no patience to see, therefore we have sent and made known to the king;

15 đặng người ta tra khảo trong sử ký các tổ phụ vua: tất sẽ tìm thấy trong sách sử ký đó và biết rằng cái thành nầy vốn một cái thành phản nghịch, gây thiệt hại cho các vua và nước; từ thuở xưa, người ta hay làm loạn ở đó; bởi cớ ấy thành nầy đã bị phá hoang.

so that he doth seek in the book of the records of thy fathers, and thou dost find in the book of the records, and dost know, that this city [is] a rebellious city, and causing loss [to] kings and provinces, and makers of sedition [are] in its midst from the days of old, therefore hath this city been wasted.

16 Chúng tôi tâu cáo vua hay rằng nếu thành nầy được cất lại, và vách tường nó được xây lên, tất tại cớ ấy, đất ở phía bên nầy sông sẽ chẳng còn phục vua nữa.

We are making known to the king that, if this city be builded and the walls finished, by this means a portion beyond the river thou hast none.'

17 Vua bèn giáng chiếu cho tể tướng Rê-hum, cho thơ ký Sim-sai, và cho các đồng liêu của họ ở tại Sa-ma-ri và ở trong các miền khác phía bên nầy sông, mà rằng: Nguyện các ngươi bình yên.

An answer hath the king sent unto Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions who are dwelling in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, 'Peace, and at such a time:

18 Bức biểu các ngươi dâng tấu lên ta đã đọc ra tỏ tường trước mặt ta.

The letter that ye sent unto us, explained, hath been read before me,

19 Cứ theo mạng lịnh ta, người ta đã tra khảo, thấy rằng từ đời xưa cái thành nầy có dấy loạn với các vua, và trong nó hằng có sự phản nghịch và việc ngụy đảng.

and by me a decree hath been made, and they sought, and have found that this city from the days of old against kings is lifting up itself, and rebellion and sedition is made in it,

20 Lại tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đã có những vua rất quyền thế, quản hạt cả xứ ở bên kia sông, và người ta tiến cống, nộp thuế, và đóng tiền mãi lộ cho các vua đó.

and mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, even rulers over all beyond the river, and toll, tribute, and custom is given to them.

21 Vì vậy, các ngươi hãy truyền lịnh ngăn cản những người đó cất lại cái thành nầy, cho đến chừng ta ban chiếu chỉ về việc đó.

'Now, make ye a decree to cause these men to cease, and this city is not builded, till by me a decree is made.

22 Khá cẩn thận về sự nầy, e các vua bị thiệt hại thêm chăng.

And beware ye of negligence in doing this; why doth the hurt become great to the loss of the kings?'

23 Vừa khi đã đọc chiếu của vua Aït-ta-xét-xe trước mặt Rê-hum, thơ ký, Sim-sai và các đồng liêu họ, thì chúng đồng lật đật đi đến dân Giu-đa tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, lấy năng lực và cường quyền khiến họ ngưng công việc.

Then from the time that a copy of the letter of king Artaxerxes is read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they have gone in haste to Jerusalem, unto the Jews, and caused them to cease by force and strength;

24 Vậy, công việc xây cất nhà của Đức Chúa Trời tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đình cho đến năm thứ hai đời Đa-ri-út, vua Phe-rơ-sơ trị vì.

then ceased the service of the house of God that [is] in Jerusalem, and it ceased till the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
