Châm Ngôn 21
1 Lòng vua như nước trong tay Chúa Hằng Hữu; Ngài nghiêng tay bên nào, nước chảy về bên ấy.
[Like] channels of water, is the heart of a king, in the hand of Yahweh, —whithersoever he will, he turneth it.
2 Xét việc làm, tự cho ta phải, nhưng Chúa Hằng Hữu xét lòng dạ ta.
Every way of a man, may be right in his own eyes, but, he that testeth hearts, is Yahweh.
3 Chúa Hằng Hữu muốn ta chính trực, công bằng, hơn là đem tế lễ hằng dâng.
To do righteousness and justice, is more choice to Yahweh than sacrifice.
4 Lòng tự đại, mắt kiêu cường, cũng là tội lỗi như phường bất lương.
Loftiness of eyes, and ambition of heart—the lamp of the lawless, are sin.
5 Trù liệu và chăm chỉ thì no nê thịnh vượng; bất cẩn vội vàng, thì nghèo đói đương nhiên.
The plans of the diligent, tend only to abundance, but, of every one that is urgent, only to want.
6 Gia tài xây dựng bằng lưỡi dối trá, như hơi nước mau tan, như cạm bẫy tử thần.
The gaining of treasures with a tongue of falsehood, is a vapour driven away, [they who seek them] seek death,
7 Bọn bất lương chối việc công bằng, lòng gian tà cuốn đùa chúng đi.
The violence of the lawless, shall drag them away, —because they have refused to do justice.
8 Đường lối người phạm tội là quanh co; việc làm người chân thật là ngay thẳng.
Crooked is the way of a guilty man, but, as for the pure, straight is his dealing.
9 Thà ở nơi góc mái nhà, còn hơn ở chung nhà với đàn bà hay sinh sự.
Better to dwell on the corner of the roof, than a quarrelsome wife, and a house in common.
10 Người dữ chuyên làm ác, dù láng giềng, nó chẳng thương xót.
The soul of the lawless man, craveth mischief, his own friend, findeth no favour in his eyes.
11 Khi người nhạo báng bị hình phạt, người dại trở thành khôn ngoan; lúc người khôn được giáo huấn, tri thức người càng tăng.
When the scoffer is punished, the simple, becometh wise, when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.
12 Đấng Công Chính quan sát nhà người ác, Ngài ném người ác vào tai họa.
The Righteous One observeth the house of the lawless, —He is ready to cast down lawless men into misfortune.
13 Bịt tai khi người nghèo khổ kêu ca, lúc ta gào khóc gào, nào ai đoái hoài.
He that shutteth his ear from the cry of the poor, even he, shall call, and not be answered.
14 Quà biếu âm thầm làm nguôi cơn giận; hối lộ kín giấu khiến thịnh nộ tan.
A gift in secret, quencheth anger, and, a present in the bosom, mighty wrath.
15 Công lý đem vui mừng cho người lành, nhưng gây khiếp sợ cho người ác.
It is a joy, to a righteous man, to do justice, but, dismay, to the workers of iniquity.
16 Người từ bỏ lương tri, sẽ rơi vào cõi chết.
The man who wandereth from the way of discretion, in the gathered host of the shades, shall settle down.
17 Vui chơi khiến con nghèo nàn; rượu chè xa xỉ không đưa đến giàu có.
A needy man, shall he be that loveth merriment, the lover of wine and oil, shall not become rich.
18 Người ác lãnh tai nạn thay cho người lành, người bất nghĩa lãnh tai nạn thay cho người ngay thẳng.
A ransom for the righteous, is the lawless, and, instead of upright men, the traitor.
19 Thà ở nơi hoang mạc, còn hơn ở chung nhà đàn bà rầy rà, nóng nảy.
Better to dwell in a desert land, than with a woman, quarrelsome and provoking.
20 Trong tay người khôn, tài sản còn lại, người dại hễ có là ăn tiêu hết ngay.
Desirable treasure and oil, are in the home of the wise, but, a man who is a dullard, will destroy it.
21 Hãy công bằng và nhân từ, con sẽ được trường sinh, công lý, và danh dự.
He that pursueth righteousness and lovingkindness, shall find life, righteousness and honour.
22 Người khôn tấn công thành trì người mạnh, triệt hạ pháo đài phòng thủ đối phương.
A city of heroes, doth a wise man scale, and bringeth down the strength of its confidence.
23 Ai kiểm soát miệng, cầm giữ lưỡi, là người giữ mình thoát khỏi rối reng.
He that keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth, out of distresses, his soul.
24 Người nhạo báng luôn kiêu căng, xấc xược; thái độ lúc nào cũng hợm hĩnh khinh khi.
A haughty insolent one—Scoffer is his name, is he that acteth in a transport of pride.
25 Dục vọng của người lười biếng sẽ giết chết nó, vì đôi tay của nó không chịu làm việc.
The craving of the sluggard, killeth him, for his hands have refused to work.
26 Người gian tham suốt ngày thèm thuồng nhưng người công chính chia sẻ rời rộng.
All the day, he greatly craveth, whereas, the righteous, giveth, and doth not spare.
27 Của lễ người ác đã là điều đáng ghét; tà tâm nó còn ghê tởm đến đâu!
The sacrifice of the lawless, is an abomination, how much more, when, with wickedness, he bringeth it in!
28 Lời chứng dối tự nó triệt tiêu, ai nghe theo sẽ bị hủy diệt đời đời!
A false witness, shall perish, but, the man who hearkeneth, with abiding effect, shall speak.
29 Người ác làm cho mặt mày chai đá, người công chính làm cho đường lối mình vững chãi luôn.
A lawless man emboldeneth his face, but, as for the upright, he, directeth his ways.
30 Chẳng ai chống lại được Chúa Hằng Hữu, dù khôn ngoan hay thông sáng, dù thương nghị mưu kế.
There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel, to confront Yahweh.
31 Người ta chuẩn bị ngựa cho ngày chinh chiến, nhưng chiến thắng thuộc về Chúa Hằng Hữu.
The horse, is prepared for the day of battle, but, to Yahweh, pertaineth the victory.
