1 Thưa ngài Thê-ô-phi-lơ thân kính, trước đây đã có nhiều người ghi chép những sự việc đã hoàn thành giữa chúng ta.
Given that many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those things that really did take place among us,
2 Họ biên soạn theo lời tường thuật của các môn đệ đầu tiên và của nhiều nhân chứng.
just as those who became eyewitnesses, from the beginning, and ministers of the Word delivered them to us,
3 Do đó, tôi đã sưu tầm, kiểm chứng tất cả sử liệu và viết lại theo thứ tự để kính gửi ngài xem.
it seemed good to me also, most excellent Theophilus, having taken careful note of everything from Above, to write to you with precision and in sequence,
4 Ước mong công trình khảo cứu này chứng tỏ những điều ngài đã học hỏi là chính xác.
so that you may know the certainty of the things in which you were instructed.
5 Thời Vua Hê-rốt cai trị xứ Giu-đê, thầy Tế lễ Xa-cha-ri, thuộc ban A-bi-gia, lo việc tế lễ trong Đền Thờ. Vợ là Ê-li-sa-bét cũng thuộc dòng họ A-rôn.
In the days of Herod, the king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron and her name was Elizabeth.
6 Ông bà là người công chính trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời, vâng giữ trọn vẹn điều răn và luật lệ của Ngài.
They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
7 Họ không có con vì Ê-li-sa-bét hiếm muộn, và cả hai đều đã cao tuổi.
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren; and they both were well advanced in years.
8 Một hôm, Xa-cha-ri vào Đền Thờ lo việc tế lễ theo phiên thứ.
Now it happened, as he was officiating as priest before God in the order of his division,
9 Ông bắt thăm nhằm phần việc dâng hương cho Chúa trong Đền Thờ.
according to the custom of the priesthood, that his lot was to burn incense, upon entering the sanctuary of the Lord;
10 Lúc ông dâng hương, dân chúng cầu nguyện ngoài sân.
and the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.
11 Thình lình, một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện đến với ông, đứng bên phải bàn thờ dâng hương.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense;
12 Xa-cha-ri nhìn thấy, giật mình hoảng sợ.
and upon seeing him Zacharias was shaken, and a fear fell upon him.
13 Thiên sứ nói: “Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ! Tôi đến báo tin Đức Chúa Trời đã nghe lời ông cầu nguyện. Ê-li-sa-bét, vợ ông sẽ sinh con trai, hãy đặt tên con trẻ ấy là Giăng.
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, because your prayer was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
14 Con trẻ sẽ là niềm vui lớn cho ông bà, và nhiều người cũng sẽ hân hoan khi nó ra đời,
And you will have joy and exultation, and many will rejoice over his birth.
15 vì con trẻ sẽ được quý trọng trước mặt Chúa. Con trẻ ấy sẽ không bao giờ uống rượu nhưng được đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ.
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he must not drink either wine or strong drink; indeed, he will be filled with Holy Spirit already from his mother's womb.
16 Con trẻ sẽ dìu dắt nhiều người Ít-ra-ên trở về với Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của họ.
And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God;
17 Con trẻ sẽ có tinh thần và khí lực dũng mãnh như tiên tri Ê-li thời xưa. Con trẻ sẽ dọn đường cho Chúa, chuẩn bị dân chúng sẵn sàng đón tiếp Ngài. Con trẻ sẽ hòa giải cha với con, làm cho kẻ bội nghịch trở nên khôn ngoan như người công chính.”
in fact he himself will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of fathers to children’ and the disobedient to the mindset of the righteous, to prepare a people made ready for the Lord.”
18 Xa-cha-ri nói với thiên sứ: “Việc đó làm sao thực hiện được? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi cũng đã cao tuổi lắm rồi!”
But Zacharias said to the angel: “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
19 Thiên sứ đáp: “Tôi là Gáp-ri-ên! Tôi thường đứng trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời. Chính Ngài sai tôi đến báo tin mừng cho ông.
So in answer the angel said to him: “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; I was sent to speak to you and bring you this good news.
20 Ông không tin lời tôi, nên sẽ bị câm cho đến khi đứa trẻ ra đời. Nhưng lời tôi nói, đến đúng kỳ sẽ thành sự thật.”
Now look, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day in which these things happen, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
21 Dân chúng đứng bên ngoài chờ Xa-cha-ri, ngạc nhiên vì ông ở quá lâu trong Đền Thờ.
Now the people were waiting for Zacharias and wondering at his delay in the sanctuary.
22 Lúc trở ra, Xa-cha-ri không nói được, phải dùng tay ra dấu, nên họ biết ông vừa thấy khải tượng trong Đền Thờ.
But when he came out he was unable to speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary—he kept gesturing to them while remaining mute.
23 Khi mãn phiên phục vụ, Xa-cha-ri về nhà.
And so, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he took off for home.
24 Sau đó, Ê-li-sa-bét có thai, sống ẩn dật trong năm tháng.
Well after those days his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and stayed in seclusion five months. She kept saying,
25 Bà tự nhủ: “Chúa thật nhân từ, Ngài đã xóa bỏ sự nhục nhã cho ta rồi!”
“So that's what the Lord has done for me in the days when He concerned Himself to take away my reproach among the people!”
26 Qua tháng thứ sáu, Đức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê,
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town of Galilee named Natsareth,
27 đến thăm Ma-ri là một trinh nữ đã hứa hôn với Giô-sép, thuộc dòng Vua Đa-vít.
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; the virgin's name was Mary.
28 Thiên sứ nói: “Chào cô, người được ơn của Chúa! Chúa ở với cô!”
So upon entering where she was the angel said, “Rejoice, recipient of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29 Ma-ri bối rối, tự hỏi lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì.
But upon seeing him she was perplexed at his word and was trying to figure out what sort of greeting it might be.
30 Thiên sứ giải thích: “Đừng sợ, vì Đức Chúa Trời đã ban đặc ân cho cô.
The angel said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found favor with God.
31 Cô sắp có thai, sinh con trai, và đặt tên là Giê-xu.
Now then, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS.
32 Con Trai đó rất cao quý, sẽ được xưng là Con của Đấng Chí Cao. Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi vua của Đa-vít.
He will be great, and will be called ‘Son of the Most High’; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,
and He will reign over the house of Jacob into the ages; indeed, of His kingdom there will be no end!” (aiōn g165)
34 Ma-ri hỏi thiên sứ: “Tôi là trinh nữ, làm sao có con được?”
So Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 Thiên sứ đáp: “Chúa Thánh Linh sẽ giáng trên cô, quyền năng Đấng Chí Cao sẽ bao phủ cô, cho nên Con Thánh sinh ra sẽ được gọi là Con Đức Chúa Trời.
In answer the angel said to her: “Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will hover over you; precisely for this reason the holy One who is to be born will be called ‘Son of God’!
36 Như trường hợp Ê-li-sa-bét, bà con của cô là người đã già, quá tuổi sinh nở, mà cũng có thai được sáu tháng rồi.
Furthermore, your relative Elizabeth, she has actually conceived a son in her old age and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren;
37 Vì chẳng có việc gì Đức Chúa Trời không làm được.”
because any word spoken by God will be possible.”
38 Ma-ri thưa: “Tôi là đầy tớ Chúa, sẵn sàng vâng theo ý muốn Chúa. Xin Chúa thực hiện mọi điều ông nói.” Sau đó thiên sứ rời khỏi cô.
So Mary said: “Yes, I am the Lord's slave! Let it happen to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
39 Mấy ngày sau, Ma-ri vội vã lên đường, đến một thành phố miền đồi núi xứ Giu-đê,
Then Mary quickly got ready and went into the hill country in those days, to a town of Judah,
40 nơi Xa-cha-ri sinh sống. Cô vào nhà và chào thăm Ê-li-sa-bét.
and entered the house of Zacharias and saluted Elizabeth.
41 Vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào, thai trong bụng Ê-li-sa-bét liền nhảy mừng, Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh.
Well it happened that as Elizabeth heard Mary's salutation the babe bounced up and down in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with Holy Spirit.
42 Ê-li-sa-bét vui mừng và nói lớn với Ma-ri: “Cô là người được phước nhất trong giới phụ nữ! Thai trong lòng cô thật phước hạnh lớn lao!
And she cried out with a great voice and said: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb!
43 Thật vinh dự cho tôi vì được mẹ Chúa tôi đến thăm!
Why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Vừa nghe cô chào hỏi, thai trong bụng tôi đã nhảy mừng.
Yes indeed, because as the sound of your salutation came into my ears the babe bounced up and down in my womb for joy.
45 Đức Chúa Trời ban phước cho cô, vì cô tin lời Ngài hứa sẽ thành sự thật.”
Blessed is she who believed, because there will be a fulfillment of the things that have been spoken to her from the Lord.”
46 Ma-ri đáp: “Tâm hồn tôi ca ngợi Chúa.
So Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 Tâm linh tôi hân hoan vì Đức Chúa Trời, Đấng Cứu Rỗi tôi.
and my spirit has exulted over God my Savior,
48 Chúa đã lưu ý đến nô tỳ hèn mọn của Ngài, và từ nay, mọi thế hệ sẽ khen tôi là người được phước.
in that He paid attention to the humble station of His slave (f). Yes indeed, because from now on all generations will declare me to be highly favored,
49 Đấng Toàn Năng đã làm những việc lớn cho tôi, Danh Ngài là Thánh.
in that the Mighty One did sublime things for me, and Holy is His name.
50 Ngài thương xót người kính sợ Ngài từ đời này sang đời khác.
His mercy is for generations of generations to those fearing Him.
51 Khi cánh tay Ngài đưa ra thể hiện quyền năng, mưu trí người kiêu ngạo liền tan biến.
He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has dispersed the arrogant in the reasoning of their hearts.
52 Ngài truất phế các vua chúa xuống và cất nhắc người thấp hèn lên.
He has dethroned rulers and exalted the lowly.
53 Ngài cho người đói được no nê và đuổi người giàu về tay không.
He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.
54 Ngài nhớ lại sự thương xót, nên cứu giúp Ít-ra-ên, đầy tớ Ngài.
He has taken the part of His servant Israel, in remembrance of mercy,
55 Vì Ngài đã hứa với tổ phụ chúng ta, với Áp-ra-ham và cả dòng dõi người đến muôn đời.” (aiōn g165)
just as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed while there is an age.” (aiōn g165)
56 Ma-ri ở lại với Ê-li-sa-bét độ ba tháng rồi trở về nhà mình.
So Mary stayed with her about three months, and returned to her house.
57 Đến ngày mãn nguyệt, Ê-li-sa-bét sinh được một con trai.
Now the time for Elizabeth to give birth was completed and she bore a son.
58 Bà con láng giềng đều hoan hỉ khi nghe tin Chúa thương xót bà cách đặc biệt.
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had used His great mercy with her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 Được tám ngày, họ đến làm lễ cắt bì cho đứa bé, và định đặt tên nó là Xa-cha-ri, theo tên cha,
So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child, and they started calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias.
60 nhưng mẹ đứa bé quả quyết: “Không! Tên nó là Giăng!”
His mother reacted and said, “Absolutely not; he shall be called John!”
61 Họ nói: “Họ hàng ta đâu có ai mang tên đó?”
So they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
62 Rồi ra dấu hỏi Xa-cha-ri muốn đặt tên gì cho đứa bé?
So they started motioning to his father, as to what he would have him called.
63 Ông sai lấy bảng viết: “Tên nó là Giăng!” Mọi người đều kinh ngạc.
Asking for a writing tablet he wrote this: “His name is to be John!” They all marveled.
64 Ngay lúc ấy, Xa-cha-ri nói được, và ca ngợi Đức Chúa Trời.
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed and he started to speak, blessing God.
65 Hàng xóm láng giềng đều kinh sợ, đồn việc ấy khắp miền đồi núi xứ Giu-đê.
(Well a fear came on all who lived around them; and all these sayings kept being talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 Mọi người nghe chuyện đều ngẫm nghĩ: “Không biết tương lai đứa bé sẽ ra sao? Vì rõ ràng tay Chúa phù hộ nó.”
All who heard kept them in their hearts saying, “What then will this child be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.)
67 Xa-cha-ri được đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh, liền nói tiên tri:
Now his father Zacharias was filled with Holy Spirit and prophesied saying:
68 “Tôn ngợi Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên, vì Ngài đã thăm viếng và cứu chuộc dân Ngài.
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited and provided redemption for His people;
69 Ngài sai Đấng Cứu Rỗi đến với chúng tôi, sinh ra trong dòng họ Đa-vít, đầy tớ Ngài,
and has raised up a horn of deliverance for us in the house of His servant David
—just as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets from antiquity— (aiōn g165)
71 Ngài sẽ giải cứu chúng tôi khỏi kẻ thù nghịch và người ghen ghét chúng tôi.
deliverance from our enemies and out of the hand of all who hate us;
72 Ngài bày tỏ lòng thương xót tổ phụ chúng tôi, nhớ lại giao ước thánh của Ngài—
to use mercy with our fathers, even to remember His Holy covenant,
73 giao ước Ngài đã thề với Áp-ra-ham, tổ phụ chúng tôi.
the oath that He swore to our father Abraham;
74 Chúng tôi được giải thoát khỏi kẻ thù nghịch, cho chúng tôi được mạnh dạn phụng sự Đức Chúa Trời,
to grant to us (having been rescued from the hand of our enemies) to serve Him without fear,
75 và mãi mãi sống thánh thiện, công chính trước mặt Ngài.
in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
76 Còn con, con trai bé nhỏ của ta, sẽ được xưng là tiên tri của Đấng Chí Cao, vì con sẽ dọn đường cho Chúa.
And you, child, will be called Prophet of the Most High, because you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
77 Con sẽ chỉ cho dân Ngài biết con đường cứu rỗi nhờ sự tha tội.
to give a knowledge of salvation to His people by the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Bởi lòng thương xót của Đức Chúa Trời, mà ánh bình minh sắp chiếu trên chúng ta,
through the merciful compassions of our God, with which the divine Dawn has contemplated us,
79 soi sáng người ngồi trong cõi tối tăm và dưới bóng tử vong, dìu dắt chúng ta vào nẻo an lành.”
to give light to those who are sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
80 Giăng lớn lên, có ý chí mạnh mẽ. Ông sống trong hoang mạc cho đến khi công khai tỏ mình trước người Ít-ra-ên.
So the child kept growing and being strengthened in spirit, and he stayed in uninhabited areas until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
