1 Tại Mích-pa, người Ít-ra-ên có lời thề này: “Chúng ta sẽ không gả con gái mình cho người Bên-gia-min.”
And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, “None of us gives his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.”
2 Khi đến Bê-tên lần này, dân chúng ngồi đó, khóc lóc thật đắng cay cho đến tối, trước sự chứng giám của Đức Chúa Trời.
And the people come to Beth-El, and sit there until the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep [with] a great weeping,
3 Họ than: “Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên! Vì đâu xui khiến cho việc này xảy ra, làm cho Ít-ra-ên thiếu mất một đại tộc?”
and say, “Why, O YHWH, God of Israel, has this been in Israel—to be lacking one tribe from Israel today?”
4 Hôm sau, họ dậy sớm, xây lên một bàn thờ rồi dâng lễ thiêu và lễ vật cầu an.
And it comes to pass on the next day, that the people rise early, and build an altar there, and cause burnt-offerings and peace-offerings to ascend.
5 Sau đó, họ hỏi nhau: “Có đại tộc nào vắng mặt trong đại hội trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu tại Mích-pa không?” Vì họ đã thề rằng ai không đến dự đại hội này phải bị xử tử.
And the sons of Israel say, “Who [is] he that has not come up in the assembly to YHWH out of all the tribes of Israel?” For the great oath has been concerning him who has not come up to YHWH to Mizpeh, saying, “He is surely put to death.”
6 Người Ít-ra-ên cứ ân hận, thương tiếc anh em mình, là người Bên-gia-min. Họ nhắc đi nhắc lại: “Hôm nay Ít-ra-ên mất đi một đại tộc rồi!
And the sons of Israel sigh concerning their brother Benjamin, and say, “Today there has been one tribe cut off from Israel,
7 Tìm đâu ra vợ cho những người Bên-gia-min sống sót, vì chúng ta đã thề trước Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ không gả con gái cho họ?”
what do we do for them—for those who are left—for wives, since we have sworn by YHWH not to give to them from our daughters for wives?”
8 Rồi họ hỏi: “Trong các đại tộc Ít-ra-ên, có ai không đến trình diện Chúa Hằng Hữu tại Mích-pa không?” Họ thấy rằng không có người nào từ Gia-be Ga-la-át có mặt trong đại hội.
And they say, “Who is [that] one out of the tribes of Israel who has not come up to YHWH to Mizpeh?” And behold, none has come to the camp from Jabesh-Gilead—to the assembly.
9 Vì sau khi kiểm tra, họ biết được, chẳng có người nào từ người Gia-be Ga-la-át đến.
And the people numbered themselves, and behold, there is no man from the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.
10 Vậy họ sai 12.000 quân tinh nhuệ đến Gia-be Ga-la-át giết mọi người tại đó, cả đàn ông, đàn bà, và trẻ con.
And the congregation sends twelve thousand men of the sons of valor there, and commands them, saying, “Go—and you have struck the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.
11 Họ nói: “Đây là điều anh em phải làm: Tận diệt mọi người nam và phụ nữ đã có chồng.”
And this [is] the thing which you do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, you devote.”
12 Trong khu dân cư của Gia-be Ga-la-át, họ tìm được 400 trinh nữ, chưa bao giờ nằm với người nam nào, rồi đem tất cả dẫn về trại Si-lô, trong xứ Ca-na-an.
And they find four hundred young women, virgins, out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them to the camp at Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan.
13 Người Ít-ra-ên sai sứ giả đi giảng hòa với những người Bên-gia-min trốn ở vùng đá Rim-môn.
And all the congregation sends [word] and speaks to the sons of Benjamin who [are] in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaims peace to them;
14 Khi những người Bên-gia-min trở về, được người Ít-ra-ên cho cưới các cô gái ở Gia-be Ga-la-át làm vợ. Tuy nhiên, số người nữ không đủ cho người Bên-gia-min còn lại này.
and Benjamin turns back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for [all of] them so.
15 Vì thế, dân chúng xót thương người Bên-gia-min, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu đã làm cho một đại tộc bị khiếm khuyết trong vòng các đại tộc Ít-ra-ên.
And the people sighed concerning Benjamin, for YHWH had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
16 Các trưởng lão của đại hội lên tiếng: “Chúng ta phải làm sao tìm vợ cho số người Bên-gia-min còn lại, vì đàn bà trong đại tộc này chết hết rồi.
And [the] elderly of the congregation say, “What do we do to the remnant for wives—for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?”
17 Người Bên-gia-min phải truyền hậu tự; nếu không, một đại tộc của Ít-ra-ên sẽ bị diệt chủng.
And they say, “A possession of an escaped party [is] to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;
18 Nhưng, chúng ta không thể gả con gái mình cho họ được, vì Ít-ra-ên đã thề hễ ai gả con cho người Bên-gia-min đều phải bị nguyền rủa.”
and we are not able to give wives to them out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed [is] he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.”
19 Họ tìm ra được một kế: Mỗi năm có ngày lễ của Chúa Hằng Hữu tại Si-lô, ở nam Lê-bô-na và phía bắc Bê-tên, dọc phía đông đường cái chạy từ Bê-tên đến Si-chem.
And they say, “Behold, a festival of YHWH [is] in Shiloh, from time to time, which [is] on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”
20 Họ nói với những người Bên-gia-min đang cần vợ: “Hãy đi trốn trong các vườn nho.
And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, “Go—and you have laid wait in the vineyards,
21 Khi thấy những cô gái Si-lô ra nhảy múa, mỗi người chạy ra bắt một cô đem về làm vợ.
and have seen, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances—then you have gone out from the vineyards, and each caught his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh for yourselves, and have gone to the land of Benjamin;
22 Khi cha mẹ của họ khiếu nại với chúng tôi, chúng tôi sẽ nói: Xin vì chúng tôi làm ơn cho họ. Chúng tôi đã cố gắng tìm vợ cho họ, nhưng vẫn không đủ. Trường hợp này, anh em không mắc tội gì cả, vì không tự ý đem gả con gái cho họ.”
and it has been, when their fathers or their brothers come in to plead to us, that we have said to them, Favor us [by] them, for we have not each taken his wife in battle, for you have not given [wives] to them at this time, [so] you are [not] guilty.”
23 Vậy người Bên-gia-min làm theo những gì họ nói. Mỗi người nam bắt các cô gái nhảy múa trong ngày lễ đem làm vợ. Họ quay về quê hương mình, dựng lại các thành rồi sống ở đó.
And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have seized; and they go, and return to their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.
24 Người Ít-ra-ên khởi hành theo từng đại tộc và gia đình, ai nấy đều trở về nhà mình.
And the sons of Israel go up and down there at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they each go out there to his inheritance.
25 Thuở ấy, Ít-ra-ên chưa có vua; nên ai nấy cứ làm theo điều mình cho là phải.
In those days there is no king in Israel; each does that which is right in his own eyes.
