1 Người Ép-ra-im huy động quân đội rồi vượt Sông Giô-đan đến Xa-phôn. Họ gửi thông điệp này cho Giép-thê: “Tại sao khi đi đánh Am-môn, ông không gọi chúng tôi tham chiến? Chúng tôi sẽ đốt nhà ông, luôn cả ông trong ấy!”
And the men of Ephraim were called together, and passed over northward, —and said unto Jephthah—Wherefore didst thou pass over to do battle with the sons of Ammon, and, for us, didst not call, to go with thee? Thy house, will we consume over thee with fire.
2 Giép-thê trả lời: “Tôi đã xin các anh tiếp viện từ lúc bắt đầu cuộc chiến, nhưng các anh đã từ chối! Các anh đã không giúp chúng tôi chống lại quân Am-môn.
And Jephthah said unto them, Great strife, had, I and my people, even with the sons of Ammon; but, when I cried unto you for help, ye saved me not out of their hand.
3 Khi thấy các anh không đến, tôi đã liều mạng ra trận, và được Chúa Hằng Hữu cho thắng quân Am-môn. Thế mà, hôm nay các anh còn muốn đánh tôi?”
So, when I saw that thou wast not going to save, then put I my life in my hand, and passed over against the sons of Ammon, and Yahweh delivered them into my hand. Wherefore, then, have ye come up against me this day, to fight against me?
4 Người Ép-ra-im nhục mạ: “Người Ga-la-át chỉ là một bọn người sống chui sống nhủi giữa Ép-ra-im và Ma-na-se.” Nghe thế, Giép-thê triệu tập toàn dân Ga-la-át tấn công người Ép-ra-im và đánh bại họ.
And Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim, —and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said—Fugitives of Ephraim, are, ye, O ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, in the midst of Manasseh.
5 Giép-thê trấn đóng dọc Sông Giô-đan ở những khúc cạn, khi có người Ép-ra-im đào tẩu, muốn thoát qua sông, người Ga-la-át phải thử người ấy. Họ sẽ hỏi: “Anh có phải là người thuộc đại tộc Ép-ra-im không?” Nếu người ấy nói “Không,”
And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan, against the Ephraimites, —and so it was, that, when the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me pass over, the men of Gilead said to him, An Ephraimite, art thou? and, if he said—Nay!
6 thì họ sẽ bảo người ấy nói: “Si-bô-lết.” Nếu người ấy đến từ Ép-ra-im, người ấy sẽ nói “Xi-bô-lết,” vì người Ép-ra-im không thể phát âm chính xác. Rồi họ sẽ bắt và giết người ấy tại chỗ cạn của sông Giô-đan. Có tổng cộng 42.000 người Ép-ra-im bị giết trong thời gian ấy.
they said to him, Come now, say Shibboleth, and, if he said Sibboleth, and he could not take heed to speak in that manner, then laid they hold on him, and slew him at the fords of the Jordan, —and there fell, at that time, of the Ephraimites, forty-two thousand.
7 Giép-thê làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên trong sáu năm. Ông qua đời, được chôn trong thành ở Ga-la-át.
And, when Jephthah had judged Israel six years, then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.
8 Sau khi Giép-thê chết, Íp-san ở Bết-lê-hem làm phán quan của Ít-ra-ên.
And there judged Israel, after him, Ibzan of Bethlehem.
9 Ông có ba mươi trai và ba mươi gái. Ông dựng vợ gả chồng cho các con với các gia đình bên ngoài tộc. Íp-san làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên được bảy năm.
And so it was, he had thirty sons, and, thirty daughters, sent he abroad, while, thirty daughters, brought he from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
10 Khi qua đời, ông được chôn ở Bết-lê-hem.
And Ibzan died, and was buried in Bethlehem.
11 Sau khi Íp-san chết, Ê-lôn, người Sa-bu-luân, làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên được mười năm.
And, after him, did Elon the Zebulunite judge Israel, —and he judged Israel, ten years.
12 Khi qua đời, ông được chôn tại A-gia-lôn trong đất Sa-bu-luân.
And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.
13 Sau khi Ê-lôn chết, Áp-đôn, con Hi-lên, ở Phi-ra-thôn, làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên.
And there judged Israel, after him, Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite.
14 Ông có bốn mươi con trai và ba mươi cháu trai, mỗi người cưỡi một con lừa. Ông làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên được tám năm.
And so it was, he had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy ass colts, —and he judged Israel eight years.
15 Khi qua đời, ông được chôn tại Phi-ra-thôn trong đất Ép-ra-im, thuộc vùng cao nguyên A-ma-léc.
And Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite died, —and was buried in Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
