Giô-sua 5

1 Khi vua các dân tộc sống bên bờ phía tây Giô-đan (gồm người A-mô-rít và người Ca-na-an sống dọc miền biển) nghe tin Chúa Hằng Hữu làm nước Sông Giô-đan khô cạn cho người Ít-ra-ên đi qua, họ mất tinh thần, không còn nhuệ khí để đương đầu với người Ít-ra-ên.

Nowe when all the Kings of the Amorites, which were beyond Iorden Westward, and all the Kinges of the Canaanites which were by the Sea, heard that the Lord had dried vp the waters of Iorden before the children of Israel vntill they were gone ouer, their heart fainted: and there was no courage in them any more because of the children of Israel.

2 Trong lúc ấy, Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo Giô-suê: “Lấy dao bằng đá để làm lễ cắt bì lần thứ hai cho người Ít-ra-ên.”

That same time the Lord said vnto Ioshua, Make thee sharpe kniues, and returne, and circumcise the sonnes of Israel the second time.

3 Giô-suê vâng lời, sắm dao, cắt bì cho dân chúng tại Ghi-bê-át A-ra-lốt.

Then Ioshua made him sharpe kniues and circumcised the sonnes of Israel in the hill of the foreskinnes.

4 Lý do Giô-suê phải hành lễ cắt bì lần này là khi người Ít-ra-ên ra khỏi Ai Cập, những người đàn ông đủ tuổi ra trận đều đã được cắt bì, nhưng họ đều bỏ mạng trong hoang mạc.

And this is the cause why Ioshua circumcised all the people, euen the males that came out of Egypt, because all the men of warre were dead in the wildernesse by the way after they came out of Egypt.

5 Tất cả dân chúng đã ra khỏi Ai Cập đều được cắt bì, còn những người sinh ra trong hoang mạc sau khi rời Ai Cập thì chưa từng được làm cắt bì.

For all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were borne in the wildernes by the way after they came out of Egypt, were not circumcised.

6 Vì người Ít-ra-ên không vâng lời Chúa Hằng Hữu, nên cuộc hành trình của họ phải kéo dài suốt bốn mươi năm trong hoang mạc, cho đến khi toàn thế hệ ấy—những người đủ tuổi chiến đấu lúc ra khỏi Ai Cập—chết đi. Chúa đã thề không cho họ vào đất hứa, một vùng đất phì nhiêu màu mỡ, là đất mà Chúa Hằng Hữu đã long trọng hứa ban cho tổ phụ họ và dân Chúa.

For the children of Israel walked fourtie yeres in the wildernes, till all the people of the men of warre that came out of Egypt were consumed, because they obeyed not the voyce of the Lord: vnto whome the Lord sware, that he would not shewe them the lande, which the Lord had sworne vnto their fathers, that he would giue vs, euen a land that floweth with milke and hony.

7 Lần này Giô-suê làm lễ cắt bì cho thế hệ sau, gồm những người mới lớn lên thay thế cha mình, vì họ chưa được cắt bì trong hành trình tiến vào Đất Hứa.

So their sonnes whome he raysed vp in their steade, Ioshua circumcised: for they were vncircumcised, because they circumcised them not by the way.

8 Sau khi chịu cắt bì, các người nam nghỉ trong trại cho đến khi vết cắt được lành.

And when they had made an ende of circumcising al the people, they abode in the places in the campe till they were whole.

9 Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo Giô-suê: “Hôm nay, Ta đẩy xa khỏi các ngươi nỗi ô nhục tại Ai Cập.” Và như thế, chỗ ấy được gọi là Ghinh-ganh cho đến ngày nay.

After, the Lord said vnto Ioshua, This day I haue taken away the shame of Egypt from you: wherefore he called the name of that place Gilgal, vnto this day.

10 Trong thời gian cắm trại tại Ghinh-ganh trên đồng bằng Giê-ri-cô, họ ăn lễ Vượt Qua vào tối ngày mười bốn tháng giêng như thường lệ.

So the children of Israel abode in Gilgal, and kept ye feast of the Passeouer the fourteenth day of the moneth at euen in ye plaine of Iericho.

11 Ngay sau ngày lễ, họ bắt đầu dùng thổ sản làm thực phẩm, lấy hạt ngũ cốc làm bánh không men;

And they did eat of the corne of the land, on the morow after the Passeouer, vnleauened breade, and parched corne in the same day.

12 vào ngày kế tiếp, ma-na không rơi xuống nữa. Từ đó, họ không còn thấy ma-na, nhưng sống bằng mùa màng của đất Ca-na-an.

And the MAN ceased on the morowe after they had eaten of the corne of the land, neither had the children of Israel MAN any more, but did eate of the fruite of the land of Canaan that yeere.

13 Đến gần thành Giê-ri-cô, Giô-suê chợt nhìn lên thấy một người cầm gươm trần đứng trước mặt. Giô-suê bước tới, hỏi: “Ông là bạn của chúng tôi hay phe địch?”

And when Ioshua was by Iericho, he lift vp his eyes and looked: and behold, there stood a man against him, hauing a sword drawen in his hand: and Ioshua went vnto him, and said vnto him, Art thou on our side, or on our aduersaries?

14 Người ấy đáp: “Ta không thuộc phe nào cả, nhưng ta đến lãnh đạo quân đội của Chúa Hằng Hữu.” Giô-suê vội sấp mình xuống lạy và thưa: “Chúa muốn dạy con điều gì?”

And he said, Nay, but as a captaine of the host of the Lord am I nowe come: then Ioshua fel on his face to the earth, and did worship, and saide vnto him, What sayth my Lord vnto his seruant?

15 Vị chỉ huy Quân Đội của Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo: “Hãy cởi giày con ra, vì đây là đất thánh.” Giô-suê vâng lời.

And the captaine of ye Lords host said vnto Ioshua, Loose thy shoe of thy foote: for ye place wheron thou standest, is holy: and Ioshua did so.
