Giô-sua 20
1 Chúa Hằng Hữu phán dạy Giô-suê:
The LORD also spoke to Joshua, saying,
2 “Hãy dạy người Ít-ra-ên chọn một số thành làm nơi trú ẩn như ta đã chỉ thị Môi-se.
Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint for you cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by the hand of Moses:
3 Người ngộ sát có thể chạy đến một trong các thành này để tránh khỏi tay người báo thù.
That the slayer that killeth any person unintentionally and unknowingly may flee there: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.
4 Tại cổng thành, người này sẽ trình bày nội vụ cho các trưởng lão của thành. Họ sẽ đem người ấy vào, cho ở trong thành.
And when he that doth flee to one of those cities shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
5 Nếu người báo thù đến tìm, họ không được giao nạp người ngộ sát, vì người này đã không chủ tâm giết người, không hành động vì thù hận nạn nhân.
And if the avenger of blood shall pursue him, then they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unknowingly, and had not hated him in times past.
6 Người ngộ sát sẽ ở lại trong thành, được dân chúng xét xử, và chỉ được về nhà mình khi nào thầy thượng tế đương nhiệm qua đời.”
And he shall dwell in that city, until he shall stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from which he fled.
7 Vậy, các thành sau đây được chọn làm nơi trú ẩn: Kê-đe thuộc Ga-li-lê, trên đồi núi Nép-ta-li; Si-chem trên đồi núi Ép-ra-im; và Ki-ri-át A-ra-ba tức Hếp-rôn trên đồi núi Giu-đa.
And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
8 Bên bờ phía đông Sông Giô-đan (đối diện Giê-ri-cô) cũng có ba thành: Bết-se trong hoang mạc thuộc đất đại tộc Ru-bên; Ra-mốt thuộc Ga-la-át trong đất Gát; và Gô-lan thuộc Ba-san trong đất Ma-na-se.
And on the other side of Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.
9 Các thành trú ẩn này đều cho người Ít-ra-ên và ngoại kiều sử dụng. Ai rủi ro giết người sẽ chạy đến một nơi trong những thành ấy để tránh người báo thù, chờ ngày ra tòa cho dân chúng xét xử.
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger sojourning among them, that whoever should kill any person unintentionally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
