Giô-na 4
1 Nhưng các diễn biến này làm cho Giô-na rất phiền và tức giận.
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
2 Ông phàn nàn với Chúa Hằng Hữu rằng: “Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, khi con còn ở quê hương, Chúa đã nói sự việc sẽ diễn biến thế này! Vì thế, con đã trốn đi Ta-rê-si! Con biết Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời nhân từ, thương xót, chậm giận, giàu ân sủng, hay đổi ý, không giáng họa.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said: 'I pray Thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in mine own country? Therefore I fled beforehand unto Tarshish; for I knew that Thou art a gracious God, and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in mercy, and repentest Thee of the evil.
3 Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, con nài xin Chúa, bây giờ xin Chúa lấy mạng sống con đi, con thà chết còn hơn!”
Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech Thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.'
4 Chúa Hằng Hữu hỏi: “Con giận có đáng không?”
And the LORD said: 'Art thou greatly angry?'
5 Giô-na ra khỏi Ni-ni-ve, dựng một cái lều ở phía đông thành phố và ngồi dưới bóng mát chờ xem việc gì sẽ xảy ra.
Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
6 Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời cung ứng một cây leo mọc cao lên rủ bóng che nắng trên đầu Giô-na. Giô-na rất thích cây leo đó.
And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his evil. So Jonah was exceeding glad because of the gourd.
7 Hôm sau, trời mới rạng đông, Đức Chúa Trời cũng sắp đặt một con sâu cắn cây leo, cây liền khô héo.
But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered.
8 Khi mặt trời lên cao, Đức Chúa Trời lại sắp đặt một ngọn gió nóng cháy thổi đến, và mặt trời rọi xuống đầu Giô-na nóng hực đến nỗi ông ngất đi và xin chết: “Con thà chết còn hơn!”
And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said: 'It is better for me to die than to live.'
9 Rồi Đức Chúa Trời hỏi Giô-na: “Con có quyền giận về việc cây leo ấy không?” Giô-na thưa: “Dạ có chứ! Con giận đến chết đi được!”
And God said to Jonah: 'Art thou greatly angry for the gourd?' And he said: 'I am greatly angry, even unto death.'
10 Lúc ấy, Chúa Hằng Hữu phán dạy Giô-na: “Con thương tiếc một cây nho mà con không phải nhọc công vun trồng. Nó đến nhanh chóng và cũng chết nhanh chóng.
And the LORD said: 'Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow, which came up in a night, and perished in a night;
11 Còn Ta lại không nên thương xót thành phố lớn Ni-ni-ve, trong đó có đến 120.000 người chưa biết phân biệt tay phải với tay trái và một số lớn gia súc hay sao?”
and should not I have pity on Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also much cattle?'
