Giô-na 1
1 Có lời Chúa Hằng Hữu phán dạy Giô-na, con A-mi-tai:
The worde of the Lord came also vnto Ionah the sonne of Amittai, saying,
2 “Con hãy đi qua thành phố lớn Ni-ni-ve. Hãy tố cáo dân này vì tội ác chúng nó đã thấu đến trời cao.”
Arise, and goe to Nineueh, that great citie, and crye against it: for their wickednesse is come vp before mee.
3 Nhưng Giô-na chỗi dậy và đi hướng ngược lại để lánh mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu. Ông xuống cảng Gióp-ba, tìm tàu để chạy qua Ta-rê-si. Ông mua vé và xuống tàu đi Ta-rê-si hy vọng trốn khỏi Chúa Hằng Hữu.
But Ionah rose vp to flee into Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went downe to Iapho: and he founde a ship going to Tarshish: so he payed the fare thereof, and went downe into it, that he might go with them vnto Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord.
4 Nhưng Chúa Hằng Hữu khiến gió lớn thổi mạnh, tạo nên một trận bão to trên mặt biển đến nỗi chiếc tàu gần bị vỡ.
But the Lord sent out a great winde into the sea, and there was a mightie tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
5 Tất cả thủy thủ đều khiếp sợ, mỗi người kêu cầu thần mình và ném bỏ hàng hóa xuống biển cho nhẹ tàu. Nhưng lúc ấy Giô-na nằm ngủ say dưới khoang tàu.
Then the mariners were afraide, and cryed euery man vnto his God, and cast the wares that were in the ship, into the sea to lighten it of the: but Ionah was gone downe into the sides of the ship, and he lay downe, and was fast a sleepe.
6 Thuyền trưởng đến gần gọi Giô-na và la lớn: “Này anh có thể ngủ như vậy được sao? Hãy dậy và kêu cầu thần của anh đi! Có lẽ thần của anh đoái đến và cứu chúng ta thoát chết.”
So the shipmaster came to him, and saide vnto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call vpon thy God, if so be that God wil thinke vpon vs, that we perish not.
7 Các người trên tàu bảo nhau: “Ta hãy bốc thăm để tìm xem ai chịu trách nhiệm về tai họa này.” Họ bốc thăm thì trúng ngay Giô-na.
And they saide euery one to his fellowe, Come, and let vs cast lottes, that we may know, for whose cause this euill is vpon vs. So they cast lottes, and the lot fell vpon Ionah.
8 Họ bảo ông: “Anh phải khai cho chúng tôi biết lý do nào tai họa này xảy đến cho chúng ta. Anh làm nghề gì? Từ đâu đến đây? Quê quán anh ở đâu? Anh thuộc dân tộc nào?”
Then said they vnto him, Tell vs for whose cause this euill is vpon vs? what is thine occupation? and whence commest thou? which is thy countrey? and of what people art thou?
9 Giô-na đáp: “Tôi là người Hê-bơ-rơ, tôi thờ kính Chúa Hằng Hữu là Đức Chúa Trời ngự trên trời, là Đấng Tạo Hóa đã dựng nên biển và đất.”
And he answered them, I am an Ebrewe, and I feare the Lord God of heauen, which hath made the sea, and the dry lande.
10 Những người trên tàu sợ hãi khi nghe điều này, rồi ông khai thật về việc chạy trốn Chúa Hằng Hữu. Họ nói: “Tại sao anh làm như thế?”
Then were the men exceedingly afrayde, and said vnto him, Why hast thou done this? (for the men knewe, that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had tolde them)
11 Rồi biển càng động mạnh hơn, họ hỏi ông: “Chúng tôi phải làm gì để cho biển lặng sóng êm?”
Then saide they vnto him, What shall we doe vnto thee, that the sea may be calme vnto vs? (for the sea wrought and was troublous)
12 Giô-na đáp: “Các anh cứ bắt tôi ném xuống biển, thì biển lặng sóng ngay. Tôi biết các anh bị trận bão lớn này chỉ vì tôi.”
And he said vnto them, Take me, and cast me into the sea: so shall the sea be calme vnto you: for I knowe that for my sake this great tempest is vpon you.
13 Họ nỗ lực chèo chống để tìm cách vào bờ. Nhưng biển càng động mạnh hơn nữa, họ không thể làm gì được.
Neuerthelesse, the men rowed to bring it to the lande, but they coulde not: for the sea wrought, and was troublous against them.
14 Họ cầu khẩn Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Giô-na, rằng: “Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, chúng con nài xin Ngài, xin đừng để chúng con chết vì mạng sống của người này. Xin đừng cho máu vô tội đổ trên chúng con. Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, vì chính Ngài làm điều gì Ngài muốn.”
Wherefore they cryed vnto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let vs not perish for this mans life, and lay not vpon vs innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done, as it pleased thee.
15 Rồi họ nâng bổng Giô-na lên, ném xuống biển, và sóng gió liền lặng yên!
So they tooke vp Ionah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from her raging.
16 Điều này khiến các thủy thủ rất kính sợ quyền năng vĩ đại của Chúa Hằng Hữu. Họ dâng tế lễ cho Chúa và hứa nguyện với Ngài.
Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice vnto the Lord, and made vowes.
17 Bấy giờ Chúa Hằng Hữu đã sắp sẵn một con cá lớn để nuốt Giô-na. Và Giô-na ở trong bụng cá ba ngày ba đêm.
Nowe the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallowe vp Ionah: and Ionah was in the belly of the fish three dayes, and three nightes.
