1 “Con người thật yếu đuối mong manh! Đời sống thật ngắn ngủi, nhưng đầy phiền muộn!
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
2 Chúng con như hoa sớm nở tối tàn. Như bóng câu vụt qua, chúng con vội vàng khuất bóng.
He cometh forth like a flower, and withereth; he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3 Chúa cần gì phải theo dõi gắt gao, và rồi đưa con ra xét xử?
And dost Thou open Thine eyes upon such a one, and bringest me into judgment with Thee?
4 Ai có thể đem điều trong sạch ra từ người ô uế? Không một người nào!
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 Chúa đã an bài số ngày của đời sống chúng con. Chúa biết rõ chúng con sống bao nhiêu tháng, và giới hạn không thể vượt qua.
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with Thee, and Thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 Xin Chúa ngoảnh mặt để chúng con yên thân! Chúng con như người làm thuê, được nghỉ ngơi sau ngày làm việc.
Look away from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.
7 Ngay cả cây cũng còn hy vọng! Nếu bị đốn xuống, nó vẫn mọc lại và nứt ra nhiều cành lá xanh tươi.
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 Dù rễ nó già cỗi trong đất và gốc thối rữa mụt nát,
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 vừa có hơi nước, nó sẽ nẩy chồi và cây liền nứt đọt như hạt giống mới.
Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant.
10 Nhưng khi người chết, sức họ liền tan biến. Tắt hơi rồi người đến nơi đâu?
But man dieth, and lieth low; yea, man perisheth, and where is he?
11 Như nước bốc hơi khỏi hồ, như sông cạn khô nứt nẻ,
As the waters fail from the sea, and the river is drained dry;
12 con người nằm xuống và không trổi dậy nữa. Cho dù bầu trời cao tan biến, họ cũng sẽ không dậy, không gì đánh thức họ giữa giấc ngủ triền miên.
So man lieth down and riseth not; till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.
13 Ước gì Chúa đem con giấu nơi âm phủ, và quên hẳn con cho đến khi cơn giận Ngài nguôi. Nhưng đến kỳ định, xin Ngài nhớ lại con! (Sheol h7585)
Oh that Thou wouldest hide me in the nether-world, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until Thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! — (Sheol h7585)
14 Người chết đi có thể sống lại chăng? Trọn những ngày lao khổ của đời con, con sẽ đợi cho đến kỳ giải thoát.
If a man die, may he live again? All the days of my service would I wait, till my relief should come —
15 Bấy giờ Chúa gọi, con sẽ lên tiếng đáp lời, Chúa nhớ mong con, tạo vật của tay Chúa.
Thou wouldest call, and I would answer Thee; Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of Thy hands.
16 Bấy giờ Chúa sẽ canh giữ bước chân con, thay vì canh chừng tội lỗi con.
But now Thou numberest my steps, Thou dost not even wait for my sin;
17 Tội lỗi con phạm sẽ được niêm phong trong túi, và Ngài sẽ che đậy gian ác của con.
My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and Thou heapest up mine iniquity.
18 Nhưng, như núi lở tan tành từng mảnh, như đá lăn ra muôn phía,
And surely the mountain falling crumbleth away, and the rock is removed out of its place;
19 như nước chảy đá mòn, như thác lũ cuốn trôi bùn đất, vì Chúa phá tan hy vọng của con người.
The waters wear the stones; the overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth; so Thou destroyest the hope of man.
20 Chúa đè bẹp con người, rồi người phải qua đi. Chúa thay sắc diện người và đuổi người đi khuất.
Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21 Họ không bao giờ biết con cháu họ sẽ được tôn trọng hay thất bại ê chề, Nào ai biết được.
His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he regardeth them not.
22 Họ chỉ biết thân mình đau đớn; đời sống họ đầy dẫy khổ đau.”
But his flesh grieveth for him, and his soul mourneth over him.
